News Beyond - Chapter Four - Beta Announcement

I'm sure FDev wishes that as well, but it's a MS and Sony thing. All updates (Beta's as well) have to be certified. So in essence, you're never really playing a 'beta' on console like you are for a beta on PC. Since it's not a final release version, MS and Sony won't post up a beta version to download.

Does that mean in the future if FDEV announced that Beta was available to all that crossplay would be more likely?

Didn't read this whole thread but my two comments are:

- Will asteroid belts be made far more dense than they are now? I mean they referred more than once to mining rings and belts so I'm assuming (hoping) that asteroid belts are getting some love.

- I wonder what the ship UI changes are? I'm always intrigued by the secondary changes...

Heat vents seem "internal" between the wings.

Top seems ultra-flat.

Does have a stealthy feel to it.

The completely different engines on it seem odd. They look great, and maybe it's purely a design thing, but why would a manufacturer completely switch out the engines for a completely different configuration?

I may not get chance to play much these days, but I'm always watching, always lurking and almost always excited at your new announcements.

This looks wonderful, and I'm going to call it out again. Every time I see new tech from Frontier, I can see tech that's going into atmospheric planetary landings. Those clouds and storm effects look just gorgeous.

Keep it going Frontier, you honestly have an absolute classic here & it's getting better all the time.

Will we be able to blow up miners and other humans by going on asteroid destruction sprees? And who gets the notoriety, me or the chunk? And if a chunk that I blew up ricochets against another asteroid chunk that I had no direct contact with but due to rng results in a broken canopy of another commander ending in a rebuy, will I be held responsible?

How about if I was peacefully mining, but another miner nearby is really bad with explosives and blows me up by mistake?

That explosion in the vid is VERY attractive.....

:)

Perhaps it's a design decision to help mask the heat signature from the rear engines

Phew! Had me worried there for a minute. Still seems a shame we're talking "variations" rather than a pseudo-random fractal lightning generation algorithm tho! (he says, hoping to plant a seed in a dev's head ;))

Perhaps they do this already, but forgot to call srand(timer()) ;).

Anyone else find it interesting that a week would be devoted to new ships in the beta. Ships generally don't require as much large-scale testing - in comparison to something like Squadrons. I wonder if it's not just new ships, but if there's some new gameplay there too?

At least the new ships week is at the end of the beta, not at the beginning, so everyone and his mum don't just obsess about the new toys and forget to test the new gameplay, as has happened in earlier betas. Then all the other new mechanics can be tested in concert with the new ships.

Ah, that'll be "Orbital Shuttle" and "Lifter" then.

Privately, I am still holding out hope that a Boa will come to us in the fullness of time. And Geckos, and Mambas.

Could be.

But actually looking at it, is it the same engine components, just aligned instead of stacked?

So I presume what this would do is reduce the height of the Phantom over the Mk 2, obvious reason for that might be the Phantom does not support a fighter bay.

And comparing the two, the Mk2 has 12 small engines across 4 groups, the Phantom 9 across 3 groups.

So likely a Krait with less height and no fighter bay, if lighter perhaps the same speed, but if the same mass a slightly lower speed?

Because we've complained about the cheap ship variations where Frontier changed 1 thing like a spoiler and called it a "new ship".

The front side should not look too similar to the Krait MkII.

Your first image hints at Guardian hybrid tech to me. Looks very "SLF"

Really like the looks of what's to come. Looking forward to seeing it in the Beta. Also, like the way you're releasing the new things in stages for the Beta. Give's me time to focus on one thing without running around looking at all the candy!
Speaking of candy.......
Releasing the Beta the day before Halloween (in the States) may lead to unintended consequences.
As of right now, my plan is to throw a bucket of candy out on the front lawn with a sign that says "First Come, First Served. Help yourself but DO NOT ring the doorbell. If all the candy is gone when you get here, go beat up some little kid and take theirs!" First one that rings the bell gets put into the evening Warlock Dinner Stew.

P.S. the new shapes in space are the young versions of the Star Trek Crystalline Entity! You heard it here first!
