Oh, & I do wish they hadn't gone with unlimited probes. How do they explain that in lore terms?

They don't. They even said in stream that they're going for fun with this decision. It's due to the fact that larger bodies can take quite a bit of probing to cover. It was going to be fun or extra work (synthesizing X amount of time per system per hour). This isn't to say that you should personally be happy with that decision, surely not everyone will be, but that's where they've gone with it. I'm good with it as it will be one less trivial, menial thing to monitor. Our opinions will differ on that, of course, not going to argue it.

Literally the only thing I read in that summary, that leaves me a bit cold, is that certain "points of interest" are going to become instantly targetable once you've probed the planet. I will continue to push for there to initially be Search Zones, & that the PoI's only become targetable after you have visual confirmation of them.

They went with unlimited probes? Huh. Interesting. I guess the issue with synthesising new ones was that non-Horizons players were excluded. Haven't seen the stream yet but have I interpreted that right?

HANDWAVE LORE:

"Planetary Mapping Probes are made from materials which are constantly and passively collected by the DSS module, as you fly through space, which as we all know isn't completely empty but does contain trace gases and dust"

Kind of a similar idea to the fuel scoop - ish.

There ya go.

You have to find planets when you enter, then you scan those planets, then you fly to those planets, then you probe those planets, than that planet tells you there's something need in zone XYZ and now you need to probe XYZ even further to uncover what it is.

I don't mind this approach, I prefer it but I worry it might be a little too much?

I asked myself the same question; I got as far as "your ship makes them automatically" until my other brain-self was like "makes them from what? how? when? all the time? why can't it do it for other things? even if it did .. how do you store those probes? are they made on the spot REALLY quickly?"

Personally, I'd prefer something like .. 25 probes and they don't crash into planets, they do fly-by's or whatever and come back. So your 25 is infinite, but they just take a second or two to come back. That is at least partially plausible.

At the end of the day, I'm okay with some gameplay elements over lore if it contributes to the game as a whole and isn't done "just because"

Not really - they said they looked at balancing the synthesis vs exploration and decided it would be more fun if infinite. And I agree, so that's good :)

Indeed; plus the amount of probes you'd need per system would be insane and they didn't want people spending all their time making probes. Imagine a system with 100+ bodies.. and you need something like 10 probes a planet (or however many Woods used on that planet)?

I enjoyed the presentation for exploration and its new mechanics and am really looking forward to the end of the beta putting us back wherever we were before the start... Not that I'm already in deep space and still heading outward in my explorca, or anything :)

The orrery, what a great idea, should mean easier plannning of a route to visit all planets in a system in the most time economical way, keep it coming FDev, everything tonight was good!

I don't know what you guys are on about. This is a disaster. Its a dumpster fire in the making. The majority of the these "changes" are revolving around things that were NEVER issues, nor were they requested. Night Vision is a colour inversion gimmick that will be used once... or twice maybe. The rest of it is a horrifying mash up of arcade level mess. Yes I agree mining was long overdue and it was a huge contention point and need revamping. But the areas that have been altered overall will harm this game and is really taking away from it particularly for seasoned long term players. Not a SINGLE core issue has been addressed or even acknowledged. Guys this is a dead game in the making. This update will fall flat, and let me tell you, speaking from experience...once you've been on the receiving end of these new gameplay exploration mechanics after ohh… say 30 hours or so... you wont be so dismissive of my points. FDev are idiots, and this update is the make or break for ALOT of players in game I know. This forum is a microcosm of overly vocal players, many of whom don't know up from down, and I wont get into the gatekeepers, that's not what the point of this reply. But mark my words this is the WRONG direction and its just more decline. I think that Elite players should proactively push back against this stupidity and stop letting a overly vocal minority of morons drag this game further into the depths of **** that it is sinking. Save for mining, which I applaud, this is furthering the end of this game by erosion of its greater player base.

The tiny screechy minority that is this forum will NOT be able to support this game as the greater community is drying up. YOUR killing your own game. STOP DOING THIS! I for one enjoy the game and have been here since the beginning, and find this tragic. This game is losing players by the hundreds every month! And its upstarts are less than half its losses. It started mid last year, I mentioned it then. Its worse now than ever. This forum isn't even the same, its degraded as well. And NO moderator can fight me on that because I remember when some of you were learning the game!!! and now your mods. You CANT tell me you haven't seen the change. If you deny it, your liars. Or your in denial. This update is NOT enough for the time and investment the community has made. Its an insult to the time and commitment that has been put in by the Elite Dangerous community, and Frontier Developments should be transparent about the realities of the coding engine and what is possible in relation to the vision that was originally given to up by David at Kickstarter, because this sure as hell isn't it... And I can assure you come 2019, there wont be anymore of this "kicking the development can down the road bit". Because there wont be anyone left to develop it for, save you lot of diehards on this forum, and newsflash...that isn't enough.

I hope this becomes a copypasta

More salt, CMDR?

The game is DoomedTM due to gameplay improvements for the majority?

Mind you, I've only been playing a few months and have yet to become jaded so kindly take my comment as seriously tongue-in-cheek!

OK, that's your criticism ... can we have the "constructive" bit now please? What would you do? What do you want?

Whew, well I just got done watching it. I even watched a few parts multiple times.

My gut feeling is....I like it. I like it ALL.

My quick notes and takeaways:

LIKES:
- UI changes look great.
- Night vision WOOHOO!
- Better fog in rings looks great.
- Making sys maps available for pre-discovered systems by other commanders is a nice touch. In a way it adds a nice "fog of war effect" to galaxy.
- FSS scanner looks pretty nice, handy, and interactive, I think I'll like this alot. Love the info panel, how it gives you the number of bodies which presents a nice goal.
- Probe mechanic: I think it looks great and fun. At last we can find things on the surface without needing to use our eyes alone!
- ORRERY!!!!: Thank you so much, looks wonderful, I'll be using this constantly.
- Codex: Very nice UI. Seems very robust with regards to exploration, love how it allows other commanders exploits to trickle down to everyone. Knowledge base, very nice. Raxxla? LOL.
- Galaxy regions: Awesome, love how this is implemented.

CONCERNS:
- Night vision: Does it work in SRV too?
- Traveler style of explorer is kind of dead now, at least the way they play today. A quick honk and glance at the FSS while charging the FSD might accomplish the same thing though, can't tell yet.
- Analysis mode & new scanner: Can you enter it while FSD is charging? If so then that is GOLD!
- Infinite probes : Eh, I'd rather have a high number which need replenishing, but its a minor complaint and I know most would not agree with me.
- Probe accuracy: I still wish the probes revealed search areas instead of precisely locating POI's, or at least did this part of the time.
- Orrery: My only nitpick is that I wish the full body surface graphics were shown here. Maybe they can't for performance reasons?

Overall though, this was super lovely, and I'm looking very forward to this being in the game.

They went with unlimited probes? Huh. Interesting. I guess the issue with synthesising new ones was that non-Horizons players were excluded. Haven't seen the stream yet but have I interpreted that right?

No. When they revealed infinite, they were talking about different numbers and ultimately were looking at either going for fun or picking a number and they chose fun. It's their words, you'll see it when you watch the stream.
