Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Well, not my first passenger mission, but I just bought an Orca - my first passenger type - and ran a passenger mission with that.
I was more than half empty (understatement), but she survived her maiden voyage.

One of my favourite ships, and I don't even do passenger missions, it has excellent performance very similar to the Imperial Clipper I believe.

Yes. She's a iClipper with higher jump range and less internal space. I'm also a fan.
The "Fasten your seatbelts" boost warning is one of the best things in the universe. :D

Haven't played since Sunday because, reasons. My nails are bitten to the quick, my fingers twitch and my ears are desperate for the sound of a Clipper boost. Even crashing into a planet would help.

Can you hear that? That's the sound of gnashing teeth

Perhaps I need a doctor or trick cyclist.

Just a quick fix.

Sorry you can't play - hope you can come back soon.

I was caught with minimal shields last night, even submitting to the interdiction and trying to run, I lasted less time than it took my FSD cool down, so ...

Today I've started running around trying to bring the whale to a better spec.
My next jump will be with half my modules powered off - OK, I exaggerate, it's not THAT bad, but it feels like that.

Heheh. To be honest, this bit, where you are running around and getting your ship together, then deciding what role will it play in your fleet and then running around again, engineering it, is possibly the most entertaining part of the game. At least for me. When I buy a new ship, I usually spend about a week doing that.
After that, well, unless it's an explorer, it gathers dust in the hangar, 90% of the time. :D
But the running around bit is great.

I have to admit, I do like exploring. I have an Asp X and a Diamondback X in store. Both nice ships, though I (sort of) favour the DBX - mainly for range.
Not sure how the new Beta will change exploration though.
Yes I watched the livestream (on catchup), but the game will be different.

Well, I sort of know what I'll use the whale for ... 'xcept some of the comparisons with the iClipper above mean I'll re-think.
Right now, my biggest problems are:
  • Felicity is refusing to upgrade the FSD fully, something about not having the right materials ...
... I've lots of materials, just not the ones she says she wants.
  • I need a light and powerful power supply. Well, I have the lightest I can get away with, but it is a bit short on power - hence the lack of working modules.
Best take that to somebody else, I don't want to make things worse with Felicity, and I doubt she does PS.

I'm gonna have the same issue upgrading my Cobra when I get back to my home system. Just bought it but Aphra does not sell the modules I need so I gotta be careful getting to a station that does. I have big guns but minimal shields and jump range.

Agreed, that new ship smell...

Just smashed my DBX into the backside of Stargazer.
Tomorrow I shall be getting my eyes tested.[knocked out]

I've done that too, not at Stargazer (not sure I've been there).
You sure the problem is eyesight? I found I was falling asleep at the helm - until I changed my HUD colours. This game is unusually good for curing insomnia (most others seem to keep me awake).

Well, at least you have guns - I tend to save the weight.

A more experienced commander than myself told me that one of the tricks to interdictions is... if you think you might not be able to evade it just power down immediately with throttle to zero, then the interdictor is a bit out of control and has to stop as well. It takes them longer for their FSD to cool down and recharge and I believe your's only takes 15 seconds to cool down and recharge. So as soon as you submit, boost away and you should stay out of weapons range long enough to jump. Again, I have no experience with this but the commander that told me has been here in ED for a few years. This could be a practice thing between you and another player in a private group to see how well it actually works. I do want to try this eventually but so far I've been able to evade every interdiction attempt except the first one I experienced. All I got message wise was.. "Empty hold" "Another wasted effort" and off I went back to my mission. Anyone have any experience in this method?

Farseer does G1 powerplants.

This is very helpful: https://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprints/

**Make sure you put in the proper experimental for the increased FSD range after the first roll.**
That would be Mass Manager for the c5 and above, and Deep Charge for c4 and below.
The pin the blueprint so you can complete it remotely, if you are short on materials.

That said, I try to make sure I have more than enough before I go
Expect probably only 1 roll at G1 but increasing to 10 at G5, and you won't be caught out.

o7

PS I assume you are using the largest A class FSD possible, if not do so.

Yes, but you have a few details off, and may be missing some others:
(mild profanity)
Pre-engineering basic version:

Updated version w/engineering, 2 builds and updated escape info.
(same)

You won't outrun a combat ship, so boost towards them.
Failing the interdiction is basically death, so you can try to fight it, but if you're losing the mini-game, just submit and do what the videos instruct.

Now I have the Orca in the same category as the T7, ships that virtually never lose to an NPC trying to interdict them. But that could just be down to the NPCs being random not mission related.

I just bring the throttle to 50% (middle of the blue) and centre the ship on the escape marker the odd touch of thrusters and another NPC goes home empty handed.

This is the build of one of my Orcas as of last time I recorded it.

Thanks guys, that interdiction evasion looks like good advice.

My current build is something like this: https://coriolis.io/outfit/orca?cod...zrqjAAAA.CwegTCAMUgzBAOEBTAhgcwDbJCAjJITNJEA=

That still needs a few tweaks ...

I'd say start saving up for an A rated powerplant if you plan to build that out.
It's about the thermal efficiency more than anything.

Adding thermal resistance to your shields will help a lot against NPC attacks.
That said, the Orca is really fast.
Use the drag drives special effect to leverage that speed.

Tried lots of new things yesterday:
Went out to Maia for meta alloy. Met my first Thargoid when i rashly dropped into a non-human USS. I was so excited, and got my a s s whooped, barely escaped with 50% hull in my unengineered Diamondback explorer!
Went and found Davs Hope, gathered mats and did my first engineering (FSD to g3, ran out of chemical manipulators et al) and revelled in my new 50ly fsd range a bit.
Tip for new players like me, save some of your explorer data for the engineers, it makes them like you!
Any tips for getting chemical manipulators?
Don't mind killing stuff if its not too challenging, combat isn't my strong suit, i don't get enough time to 'git gud'.

Dav's is one of the best sources for CMs.
If you don't mind hunting for High Grade USS, you can also favorably trade down with Pharmaceutical Isolators (found in independent outbreak systems).
