The Star Citizen Thread v9

Person A: *SC is going to fail because DS said so/Elite is better/I am well versed in Birdlaw and Crytek will soon be able to legally harvest Chris Roberts kidneys*

Define "fail". If you want to argue that SC may - at some undefined point in the future - evolve to be a fun game of some sort, sure. That might happen. It seems unlikely given CIGs emphasis on creating a life simulator rather than a game, but I'll accept some people would find that fun. At least some of the time. IMO, it seems the most likely outcome so far. Star Citizen will release, and it may even be fun.

If you want to argue that CIG can deliver the game that was promised? Sorry. That boat has already sailed - that game is dead. Not because DS says so...but because it is. There are too many flaws. Too many bad decisions. Too much that has gone wrong. CIG will need to scrap what they have and restart to fix the issues that exist now. If they can't do that, they can just paper over the cracks... and, from what I can see, they are doing what I'd expect. Pull back on the vision, shore up the engine as best they can and try to hide the shortcomings using the standard smoke and mirrors routine every game dev makes use of. I hope they will get close to the vision they have sold...but meet it? Not a chance.

Person B: *Counters argument citing DS isnt all that and a bag of potato chips, Elite isnt quite the second coming that A thinks it is, and perhaps based on similar cases the lawsuit isnt going to bring the whole thing crashing down.*

DS isn't all that - true, but that doesn't make him wrong or someone to dismiss. Despite his flaws, he is very often right...just not on the timescales people want, or to the degree he himself hypes.
ED is not the second coming...it is heavily flawed in its own right. It looks beautiful, it has great sound and music, the flight model works...it gets all the basics RIGHT but delving deeper things like multicrew, some of the gameplay mechanics, the background simulator, the Thargoid storyline, Powerplay, SLFs, and a whole host of other issues and aspects of the game have (IMO) been mishandled. But - unlike SC, there is a game there and 3.x is helping address SOME (not all, but some) of the games many flaws.
And based on similar cases, the lawsuit is a real threat. CIGs decision to split the license alone is going to cause serious problems, even if the issues 2.4 are dismissed. Everything else just compound the impact.

Slew of posters: Stop talking about DS/Elite/actual law precedent person B! Thats offtopic irrelevant! LOL, buy an Idris!, cROBBERts, etc etc. *spam reports person B's post*

That'd be the mods.

The people posting here are brave enough and care enough about their fellows to take the time to post and shine a light on what is going on in the dark.

Ha, saying "SC is terrible, don't buy it!" in this topic is about as brave as confessing in pub that you like beer. But maybe I have a different concept of 'bravery'. :p

Slightly sweary meditation on the problems of obsessive "realism" in games, with obvious parallels in SC (waiting for trains, waiting for cargo loading, waiting for CIG to deliver the games they promised 6 years ago).

Of course Roberts has promised extreme attention to detail, but he hasn't managed to deliver it yet. So I'm confused as to whether that's good or bad.

Yeah, Jim as always have interesting point to make. In fact, RDR2 reviews almost all of them points out some of realism being too much as might even stand in the way of enjoyment of the game. Although as his example with newest AC game is a bit extreme opposite, I personally believe that Rockstar went a bit overboard with some of this stuff. There's also some considerable inconsistency, as you don't get dressed in real time, yet almost everything else feels like going on for real.

There are of course interesting counter arguments to make, and certainly people enjoying long games - like me example - could point out ways how this could be handled. But this could underline how niche game SC in the end could be when released with currently planned feature set. I watched goons playing 3.3 today and while I really like work of environmental artists, I will say lot of tedious jumping around feels...tedious. If this is optional, and something I can take on time after time, then cool. If this is something I am forced to do regularly....yeah, it would need stronger sale than it is now.

All I can say is
Bring on December, that brings the Sqn.42 road map which brings us to a release date that then brings a released game to actually talk about.

The fun I had with following SC started with Batgirls vidoes on the lore, but without a way to experience it, it has been a forgotten topic.

What I find most interesting are the jpeg collectors. One upon a time - and bear in mind this is a few years back now - they made cute little jpeg collection, urm, jpegs.

And then boasted about them.

Where are they all now?

just a check....has the flight model changed already (and if yes, in what way) or was it announced as work in progress for a later patch?

Well I just tried to visit Levski and see if I can buy any ship....Surprise there is no more ships to buy no idea why....that hangar for ship sales was totally empty if anyone know why is that pls. share with us....and yeah soon as I get even close to the Levski fps drops into the very low painful single digits numbers....

Its bugged. Can try server hopping to see if you end up on server with ships. Or just wait till it goes to the regular PU and has a more acceptable level of bugginess. I've never had the ship store work, but I'm not really playing in the PTU (well, or at all).

Every time I watch a promotional video from SC, my credit card starts to slip out of my wallet, and then, to return to earth, I simply come here and read your posts, and I go back into reason. Thank you guys!. By the way, the SQ42 history video is amazing! :D

it is frankly insulting for people like me who originally were more into Sqd42 than SC, back then I didn't even back ED because I couldn't and never played MMO before due to inadequate internet infrastructure on my part.

THX @Sovapid.......I really don´t have that kind of will power to keep repeating this madness...I will wait for bug-fix....
