Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Btw, do you know if a ship, which requires a medium landing pad can land on a planet's station?- Are there medium landing pads?- I never really paid attention to it.

I'm pretty sure every planetary base has at least medium size landing pads. Every one I've been too so far has had large size landing pads as well. You can always go here and check it out before you go but the tiny McKay Beacon I went to once even had large landing pads. https://eddb.io/station

There are some that have no landing pad from what I see on that site so I guess you just fly there and surface land somewhere close. Probably use your buggy for what ever you need to do. Not really sure about those but someone will clue us in I'm sure.

All planetary ports have large pads - only orbital outposts have no large pads. There are no locations with small pads only (unfortunately).

Planetary settlements and outposts may not be accessible to land on a pad, even if there is a pad there which you will see NPC security use.

Some planetary installations have "trespass zones" which will warn you, fine you and then kill you if you enter and linger in your ship.

Suspect the ones without pads are secure and a landing attempt will get you blown up as you will be classed as trespassing - in ship and SRV.

If you're as hard as nails and good at combat, you can try and take out the defence grid so you can land. Don't think I'll ever try that! Saw a toob vid on it once but it's not for the faint-hearted.

Edit: PH did the ninja on me!

That video from Vindicator Jones was pretty cool. He did it in his gunship, then landed it, drove around in his SRV to scan a data thing and then left. That was a big money ship. well beyond my capabilities and bank account. Gotta know your limits I suppose.

Yeah, I have seen the latter, looks like a red transparent curtain around the perimeter of the trespassing zone.

Unfortunately some secure zones are guarded as well from the air and then you are basically f...ed in your SRV. Saw that in a video from ObsidianAnt.

I decided to to faff around with my ships a bit and took a closer look at my sadly neglected DBX.

"'Ere! 'Ang on! " Say I. No engie work? So, I roll up the sleeves on my Remlock and start stripping out those E modules - this ship was very much part of learning curve so I wasn't so mass conscious. Let's see how far I can push this thing without grabbing extra mats and spending too much.

G4 FSD, no experimental... 56ly max jump.

Whoa!

So, hangar bay in, arsenic to find and off for some exploration thinks me. But may be tomorrow.

Where you gonna go shopping at? I'd go here if I was looking but it's a haul at 144ly from my home system. Have to pack a big lunch box. https://eddb.io/system/17774

Don’t forget those crash sites and material traders. Trading down from high grade mats soon fills your allowance and means engineering tests and mistakes are far less costly. I often try and go to a different site when I need to stock up so that it doesn’t get too same-y and too enjoy the spooky atmosphere at many of them.

I started a second account a couple of days ago, planning on using that one for long term/range exploration.

CMDR Bigeye-Longneck!

Happy to already have a decked out Viper III and T6, and am starting to unlock all the engineers now.
Funny how much easier it is the second time around, even accounting for the increased payouts/rep etc.

That is not surprising, because you have the knowledge already, which a new player has to slowly gather and sort out first. Like finding out what the game has to offer. Just to give an example - you say "am starting to unlock all the engineers now" - well, good for you, I might just be around for as long as your second account and I have no clue how to get to an engineer, I have heard though, that there are some engineers, but no idea how to get to them. This is basically why you are quicker the 2nd time around - because "been there, done that" is valid for you, but not for me. And so it takes me an eternity, what is for you easily and quickly done 2nd time around.

Rep for doing that. I've said it before - I don't know how people do it - even knowing what they know to help progression, I'd be loathe to have "nothing" all over again!

No doubt, and as I mentioned payouts are much higher now.
It's a lot of fun starting over!

The basic information for unlocking the engineers is in your ship's computer.
If you open the right UI panel to the status tab, you can click on the little "nut" icon.

That will show you what you need to do next.
Just be aware that sometimes it takes a reload or two before changes show up.
I highly recommend unlocking/using Elvira Martuuk, The Dweller, Lei Chung, Felicity Farseer and Professor Palin.
That will require unlocking a couple more engineers along the way.
It will transform your ships!

Lots more info in here: https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/

I've read everything about the engineers at least a dozen times from that link. Once I get my fleet of eight purchased and upgraded as far as I can go without them I start the slow process of engineering each one, one at a time until I've maxed out each ship for it's dedicated purpose. For example, I don't want monster weapons on my Sidey, I just want her to be blazing fast with good shielding and armour. I really like Inara and I highly recommend getting an account there if you don't already have one. I like posting my journal so it brings up my activity and then writing in the diary/logbook section. It's more of an RPG account of my life in ED. Still trying to decide on that Dolphin though. I might buy one just to turn it into a motorhome and go camping on planets with it.

You might want to have a look at my Dolphin layout - well, weaponless - made to be a luxury liner, serving business class to luxury class passengers - with some planetary capabilities as well and DC for comfortable landing approaches even on the dark side of planets. I haven't build that ship yet, just pondering with it's fitttings.

Btw this is my newest acquisition - serving economy and business class passengers (6/8) - and the best, it is already reality, I built it yesterday and it is already in service:

Might be strange to use a combat ship as a passenger transport - but it has a reasonable jump range, which is quite stable, if laden or not. It's boost speed is marvelous and I can boost quite frequently. it performs well on planet surfaces and reacts quickly to thruster inputs and it's canopy has enough window space, to be flown with FA off as well - in an Adder I see like nothing when pitched down. In the Cobra I see well.

Dunno if I'd want an SRV in a passenger ship, mostly because the passengers can't take a ride in it. They might like landing and peeking out the window though and there are probably sightseeing passenger missions where that is requested. My plans are to stack one full of economy class cabins and then eventually get the FSD and Thrusters engineered for distance and speed. The Coriolis build I'm working on says I can put 34 butts in seats so stacking tourist outings should be fun. Like a big party boat. I still get those rich passengers with the economy class cabins too. Got 500k for hauling one day before yesterday in my economy cabins I have in the Cobra.
