Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I ran into something funny a few days ago. I was out doing a series of assassinations and in one of them I was directed to go to a planet that was completely black. After I destroyed the target, I made several orbits and could not find any part of the planet that wasn't pitch black. I thought, ‘Is it possible that a pure black planet exists?' and or, ‘This definitely has got to be a bug.' During my final orbit I noticed that there was a large planet that was also black, but was surrounded by a white halo. The mysterious black planet I had discovered was black because it was in the shadow of the other planet!

On a planet relatively near to it's sun, when you land at the border of light/dark, it can be pretty hard to navigate your SRV, because shadows are extremely long and without your SRV light on, you might just dip in and out of darkness and light while driving, if it is a rather hilly planet. It is a great view though, to see the sun that near and partly hidden behind the horizon. Beware of cliffs on such a planet though, you might just not see how deep something is due to it being covered in darkness.

If this wasn't in the beta make a note of its location and revisit it after the release as the new lighting or lack is impressive.

Sounds like an encounter i had out at Big Poppas House when i flew into something on a particular approach several times before the system helpfully kicked in with a navigation hazard marker.A small asteroid drifting in close orbit to an asteroid base became a literal 'accident black spot. '

Not playing the beta. Do the planets in ED actually orbit the star? If so the two planets may not be in alignment by now. I don't think I'm going to be able to find it again, I should have made a note of its location.

Check the player journal, where you went should be in the logs.

Yes, the planets do orbit around stars. In real time, though. You can see the orbit periods in the system map, I believe.

Yeah they definitely do - I could experience this with a station orbiting a planet, where the shipping lane from the sun was obstacle free and when I revisited that station, it was behind the planet coming from the same direction. And days later it was again obstacle free, but the station on the other side of the planet.

Something like this is a pretty simple calculation, because nothing has to be computed for as long as no one is in the system - and if someone gets into the system and near such an object, it is a simple multiplication using the system time of the server to figure out where the object is in space. So this is less of a performance impact than one would expect.

Same with planet rotation - a whole lot are tidally locked, which means always the same side shows to the sun or the body they orbit around, others aren't, there you can actually experience a sunset, if the rotation period is not too long. An example of this is our moon, it is tidally locked to the earth, which means we see always the same side of the moon. Being on the moon you could experience a sunset, but just about every 4 weeks.

incursions sound pretty serious though, if not dealt with, they will actually damage stations. I guess I should start to get some combat practice soon. It could be a damaged station every day as far as I understand it, if not enough fight them. I am not sure though, if this is as well in solo play or private groups the case. In solo play one would have to take them on completely alone I guess - which sounds like a suicide mission.

There's a megaship in Okinura apparently and that's quite nearby. I'll take a reccy , cheers!

Have you tried any of the Crash sites yet? The location hidden for spoilers below is great for all sorts of G5 raw materials and lots of good data too, all across two sites very close together and has aliens and things to get the attention of aliens.

You can go there and be ignored whilst being very close indeed. Or, like me on a recent trip, you can try something silly and poorly thought out whilst in a very lightly shielded and unarmed bubble taxi and visit the rebuy screen. I advise option 1. :D

Scouts can be taken by a single ship using conventional weapons, and IIRC some people have taken out some of the bigger Thargoids by themselves using the AX weaponry and or the Guardian hybrid stuff (conventional weapons don't work on them).

Mostly the big ones ignore you (not counting the upcoming Thargoid CZs) unless you try and scoop pods etc they were after or have something of theirs in the hold.

Ok, then I give it try in case. i just do not want to relocate just because there is an incursion going on, but rather help to keep them in check.

Interesting!

I went to a penal colony where everyone had died and the comm scans revealed a woman's voice saying what had happened - she was freezing. There was a flying cabbage and I had to reactivate some weapon towers.

I've been to Jamesons Cobra which was great for G5 data.

And I had that tip off I mentioned which had theThargoid noises around and about but they never revealed themselves.

I have the coords for a crashed Conda so I ought to pay a visit.

According to this link, there is a megaship in Okinura. I'm thinking these boats have sailed and I'm way too late to see these things. Damned if I can find it...

Yaulp. Please ignore - I didn't mean to quote/reply (as per below) so please could a Mod remove this post?
