Are we there yet?

Hmm has it? Last I recall I can’t multicrew or Wing up in solo. I guess features have been locked to certain modes. It also was only said that at this time it was just a discussion. They however, did not confirm it will not be going open only or if they won’t or aren’t considering making changes to PP. so why don’t you off in X4 where you can have an entirely solo experience?
I'm sure FD would be super happy to have all there solo players leave the game.![]()
In PP its about killing players or shooting them, because its only players that move merits otherwise its a CG. If you can block someone because they shoot you in a mode about shooting you, thats plain illogical. 3.3 has a profanity filter, and if you wind up being racially abused or threatened in an out of game way, report it using the provided report feature.
You brought up the issue of having console and PC players not being able to interact as justification for not having Open only because they cannot 'see' each other.
In a game about players doing everything, you have one group that sits AFK in PG all week and drops hundreds of thousands of merits with zero danger of interdiction or destruction. You have another that hoard merits in open and take the chance they might be killed, waste that time and lose the expansion. PP in this way is broken- P2P might render the chance of meeting another player to less than 100%, but then it means the chance of meeting one is still greater than 0% forcing you to adopt non min / max attitudes.
A quote from 2016? And about the game at large or PP itself? It would be helpful if FD said what percentage PP is played in, and what % of merits is delivered in what mode from each power.
You do need a proper poll, but you first need to make the choice clear and first remove the things that don't work in the game.
Before any Open only poll FD need to move unique modules out of powers to stop module shoppers. You need to remove merit decay, hauling merit quotas and related irks. You have to enact the 5C changes. Only then will it be fair because you can see a clear choice.
FD have (see below) offered to evolve PP 4 times. This suggests that the ED team ('we' as in the ED team as an entity with Sandro being the interface between us (the players) and the team) don't see PP working.
What I'm advocating is that rather than homogenize identical gameplay across features, FD should embrace they are different and provide compelling choices and experiences. The BGS is perfect for Solo and PG, along with pure hauling CGs. Open suits competing CGs and PP.
Its 4 times. Every time Powerplay updates have been posted, they include mode rebalancing or changes. There was an earlier one (from 2016?) for weighting merits, there was one earlier this year that was not widely distributed, one Open only (flash topic I) and the other Weighted (Flash Topic II). Thats a lot of hinting. Not once have FD said they want it to stay the same.
Sadly I bet none of those people ever play Powerplay. Michael Brookes played for about 2 cycles supporting Archon and that was it. FD don't understand PP at all.
The exploits are unbalancing PP and have a profound impact. Fix the exploits and the problems in PP stop.
What, such as hunting players who hold the merits while others defend them? Thats content thats emergent and continually changing each and every day.
If that was true, then why wasn’t Powerplay designed around this mechanic you described. Why do I get the same amount of merits, regardless of whether I deliver them in Solo, PG, Open during my normal play time (which has a almost no opposition), or Open during my local prime time, which has a negligible amount of opposition?
For a mechanism that is about “killing players or shooting them,” there is precious little incentive to do that if you want to achieve your goals, as opposed to slowing down the other side from achieving theirs. Even then, countering them via a PvE is much more efficient than spending time in the vague hope of an opportunity to oppose someone else.
Personally, I think a much bigger obstacle to players interacting the way you want is how instancing “works.”
P2P is an issue, but thats a game wide problem that FD have to face. But, instancing has improved immeasurably since ED 1.0.
And if Steam Charts is to be believed, I play during global peak players, where there is three times the number of players than my local prime time.
Then you are unlucky. Its not a perfect system, but I'd take a non-zero chance of meeting someone who'd rip my ship in half than simply zombie haul, where each trip is exactly the same. Large wing battles are not rare these days.
I can very much understand what you’re saying here, but I have to wonder how how this is functionally different from, say, having several accounts, gathering your merits during during local non-peak hours, and waiting for the tick. Or for that matter, a player whose “weekend” falls before the tick. That, and why do you think this hyper competitive player whose “gaming” the system by using their choice of mode to play their way, won’t game the system in other ways, to gain an advantage?
A significant majority of players play in Open, but as a local non-prime time player, I’d never know it.
Powerplay starts at 8am (ish) UK time Thursday and ends 7am the following week- real time enemy patterns during that period in Open is fine, because you are still taking the risk that someone might be there. Its like air patrols before RADAR was introduced- how did people know when the enemy would be in the sky? They did it by noting times and being vigilant.
Whats poor is having groups and individuals who have accounts sat in combat expansions (in PG or solo) with no credible opposition to either scare them off or destroy them. They simply sit there in G5 armoured ships and generate merits with a zero chance of ever seeing a credible opponent. If the new CZ mechanics were in PP now, this would be much less of a problem, but they are not.
This is where you and I disagree. If fun and rewarding PvP is your goal, then you should reward the PvP, not penalize the mode choice. If done right, there is no reason why competing CGs, Powerplay, or for that matter the BGS can’t have rewards for completing goals in the face of actual player opposition. The hard part, of course, is doing it right.
Flying around, seeing your teammates and getting into scrapes is satisfying. Instead of chasing a progress bar and pressing J every minute, you have a whole spectrum of tasks, roles and experiences to do. There is nothing better than bringing a plan together that you all worked on and see each other do it, protecting each other etc. Its the interaction and use of skills that is rewarding, and IMO Open PP gives that.
Personally, whenever I see some variation of “Frontier doesn’t understand X,” I mentally substitute “play in exactly the same way I play” for “understand.”![]()
FD don't. They lied about Collapse, ignored the playerbase regarding bugs and the impact the modes has on PP. They did not understand how the combination of merit hauling, merit decay, collusion piracy, 5C, engineering, modes, 'black box' obfuscation of how a complex system worked (forcing players to pick apart how it worked in the dark for years) had at all. They introduced a massively flawed feature with no testing, and no clear development path. It went from 1.3 Powerplay fanfare to utter silence.
Does that sound like Frontier understanding Powerplay and its implications when it was introduced?
In my experience, most of the people interested in this kind of “emergent content” assume they’ll be the hunters. When it comes time to be the hunted or the defense thereof, they find other things to do.
From my experience Powerplay players don't fit into strict roles. From my time in Utopia to now in The Kings Domain players fill all roles. They haul, and switch roles as needed. This is not like guarding a fort, defense means chasing away rivals while haulers evade.

Also they're likely to be in that system anyway with the purpose of undermining your factions NPCs
