I had a hunch today that 'The jewel that burns on the brow of the mother of galaxies' might be a reference to the constellation Corona Borealis. I checked Alphekka (as it is in the Galaxy Map) which is the brightest star, sometimes called Gemma. This system turned out to be empty with only the star (and two degraded ss with ordinary wrecks and low-grade data/mats).
.
There might be another way to read the Alleged Toast of the Dark Wheel, if it is providing directions to Raxxla. What if each part is meant to be a clue to a particular system and, once you know all the systems, they can be used to determine/triangulate the location of the system with Raxxla, be it through a clear pattern in their arrangement or a (unique solution) system that is equidistant to all of them? If so, any idea what systems the other parts of the riddle might be referring to? (I think I still like the possibility that Alphekka is the system referenced by the first part and it being empty does not disprove its being involved).

Mmm
All afternoon to set up my keybinds for 3.3 (I changed back to my hotas from dual stick and totally revamped the button usage), then 2 hours to fss scan one system (admitedly it did have 73 bodies, but it was a dreadfuly slow process!).

This is going to cut down my questing speed dramatically! It will take ten times as long to disprove my latest hypotheses!

It's not just you. I tried it during beta, couldn't figure it out after several attempts at setting keybinds/going through tutorial, gave up. Just upgraded, went through the tutorial again, set up keybinds again, and still can't figure it out or get it working properly with HOTAS. At least you managed to get to the point of actually exploring, I'm giving up until they retrofit the original honk. This isn't engaging gameplay even if you can get it working, it's just another grindy timesink. Sad, but not unexpected frankly. They've succeeded in killing the one thing that might have brought me back to the game. Oh well, maybe in six months the honk will be back.

Sorry to hear you've been having trouble. I practised the FSS a lot in beta (as I started out in between Colonia and the Bubble) and have transferred the keybindings and setting over to live, where they work very well, although I do use keyboard and mouse. My technique is to:
1) have the mouse set to move the FSS viewpoint around, with a sensitivity that allows it to move very quickly, without losing all fine control.
2) zoom in/out is set to W and S respectively
3) tuning the scanner is set to A and D for left/right, sensitivity also suitable for fast movement
4) F enters and leaves the FSS
5) I move a short way away (only 5-10 seconds of flight for dwarf stars, 20 seconds worked fine for a GIII giant today) from the primary star to try and get a clear view of most of the Ecliptic Plane before opening the FSS
This means I have my left hand able to quickly control both the zoom and tuning whilst I move the view around. I have not yet scanned a system with 73 bodies but it takes several minutes to do one with 30+. I imagine it might take me 10-15 minutes to do one with 73 bodies, depending on how they were placed (and I sometimes have to look around a bit if a planet is way outside the Ecliptic Plane). If it's taking you 2 hours, then it sounds like you're moving the field of view around much more slowly than needed. So I can only suggest trying to fiddle with sensitivity and to see what works for you (would a hat switch work well for both tuning and zooming, maybe?).

Same thing here. Mostly playing ED here, on this thread. In six months I think the new patch with the "Extended FSS" will have been released.
So hyped.
Until then, Dual Universe, X4 and the Raxxla FD thread !

The Opmhalos Rift is a central subject in the codex for Raxxla.

Deneb is a historic(and future) north star of Earth and the current North star of Mars. It's the only North star that lies in the Galactic plane.
Denebs position is in the cleft, where the Great Rift starts.

Denebs position at the start of the Great Rift is known i ancient cultures as the birth place of the Sun, between the thighs of Nut. The entrance to the underworld, where the rivers part. Or the point where the souls of the dead are sent down the dark path or up the bright path. The symbolism of migrating birds(Cygnus the swan/hen/goose/eagle and the mythical roc bird) is heavy in the myths.

I will not go into detail on the research, but you can read about it in:

This was good enough for me to go. I went to Alpha Cygni, about a week ago. I found something very mysterious, in the least expected place.

After looking at the system map for a while(I was in VR at the time), I noticed a new object in the map. It grew slowly and looked like a dark cloud. When panning the screen, it moves in a plane between the normal system bodies and the background stars. It's always located in the bottom right corner of the map.

Rep for the tin-foilery, who knows...since the Codex all bets are off. Honestly feel FD have hit the re-set button on Raxxla since the Dark Wheel missions dried up/binned/bugged/forgotten. Third party tools and lore aside the Codex is the official source of lore within the game so I'm pretty certain the Dark Wheel toast and Stella poem are maps of some sort.

Now originally FD said there would be no clues and it would be obvious. I take that to mean that FD staff would not give clues, but the game would hold something within it to guide us and it would be pretty obvious (Dark Wheel missions). With those potentially gone (for now) this Codex is all that we have to go on (for now) so I think we need to pull it apart to build a map.

The structure of the toast feels to me that it is painting a picutre within the night sky (not a 3D map) but of constellations as seen from Sol directing our attention towards a sector. Maybe the Stella poem ties into this as well and goes a little deeper. In other words its a journey.

I'm postulating it begins in Cassiopeia and we're supposed to follow the next clue within the next line/passage (Heart & Soul?) and then the next, and then the next and so on until...

The Northern Cross isnt far off from Cassiopeia (X marks the spot?). Honestly it could be anything but we have 'new eyes to see' with (FSS scanner) which makes exploring systems much faster, and I expect it will be integral to locating Raxxla, especially if it isnt a plannet but a station. Maybe we have to scan each system within the map for clues? Who knows but the Codex is the primary starting point I'm certain.

All intelligence should be evidence driven, for too long we've postulated very complex and rational concepts such as rouge planets etc based on very flimsy data. I honestly feel the original DW missions were to take us on some merry dance, that resolved into something but their gone - for good (for now).

What ever Raxxla is/was it had to have been in game since day one, if it were a planet or moon nothing could have been done with it apart from scanning it, but a station could be docked with and whatever it held obtained. The Raxxla logo also looks very much like a Station: Raxxla Gateway Station (might be reason it doesnt appear in Gal-map searches or we walked past it in the past).

Currently having the best time in Elite Dangerous in a very long while, the game is afoot.

The Opmhalos Rift is a central subject in the codex for Raxxla.

An omphalos point is a nave point. The point that does not move, when something rotates. It's a fixed connection between Earth and the sky. A point on the Axis mundi.

A typical scientific omphalos point, would be the North Pole and the Axis mundi would be connected to Polaris, on the other end.

and more precisely formulated like the codex, Islands in the Sky: The Four-Dimensional Journey of Odysseus Through Space and Time.

This one is unfortunately just a google book search, but quite a few pages on the subject is available. If anyone in Britain can find it in a library, you should grab it. It may point to several other interesting stars as well. it does use the frase: 'For those with ears to hear', to describe reading between the lines.

Pics are big, so links only.

I actually think that it's a fair chance that Alpha Cygni/Deneb is Raxxla ant that we see the Omphalos Rift in the system map. Take a look for your self.

- Open system map
- Zoom all the way out
- Move cursor to bottom right posittion
- Zomm in
- Wait. It takes about a minute before a tiny spec pops up. Then it grows.

I have searched, probed, scanned(in 3.2 and 3.3) and listened. I have jumped, in and out and across. I can't locate it.
It's obfuscated. Half a dimension away.

I think we need more eyes and ears in there. [up][alien][up]
Had to pay a visit to the bubble but heading over now.

The Dark Wheel Toast begins like this.
"To the jewel that burns on the brow of the mother of galaxies"
Well this here is Cassiopeia, Mother of Princess Andromeda.
The big star in her brow is Zeta Cassiopeia.
Good Luck and o7

Thanks for the tips - It was actually Jorki who took two hours to scan a system after getting it setup. I've given up as I don't really want to use mouse and keyboard after having shelled out for a HOTAS to specifically play this game, and it does not seem to have been designed with a HOTAS in mind, nor is it entirely clear to me after going through the tutorial at least five times how it works best and why I can't get certain things bound properly. Back to Stellaris.

Nice image - good find.

Alt names: Fulu, Zeta Cassiopeiae, 17 Cassiopeiae, HD3360, HIP2920, HR153.

In Chinese astronomy, Zeta Cassiopeiae is called 附路, Pinyin: Fùlù, meaning Auxiliary Road, because this star is marking itself and standing alone in the Auxiliary Road asterism,Legs (mansion) (see : Chinese constellation).[10] 附路 (Fùlù) was westernized into Foo Loo, but that name was also designated for Eta Cassiopeiae by R.H. Allen, with the meaning of "a by-path".

Can confirm the System Map object(s) - I can see two. They appear to be some kind of cloud, with a light source within that slowly increase and decreases in brightness, lighting up the clouds as they do so. They could also be Nova or similar which eject layers of Gas.

Haven’t checked any other System’s Maps to see if it’s unique to Alpha Cygni.

Edit - have checked the nearest system and there’s no sign of anything similar.

Edit 2 - Biological signs on the 2nd planet. Surface Temp is 1,374k!

Edit 3 - Just Space Pumpkins (Rubens Bioluminescent Anemone)

Yes, I realised I must play around with the sensitivity to speed up the rate of moving around the scan arwa, it’s too slow by default (I’m using stick X&Y axes). The system I was in had a lot of moons close together & it was difficult to discriminate between them. Then when I zoomed in I got several more hotspots ... so had to slowly scan around again.

@Clavain- the honk still works. It identifies the planets so you can then decide whether to spend some time using the fss to give a detailed scan. I think it’s quicker (potentially) than travelling out to a body to use the DSS to get the fine detail, but I did have a scanner engineered for long range so I could do most of my scanning from the star’s location. The honk gives you some credits, the fss gives you more and the probe mapping gives you still more.

Edit: stick with it! It was easier for me yesterday, scanned a few planets where I had suspicions from previous exploration trips (nothing to report, apart from one gas planet where I got a human signal, which turned out to be an orbital agricultural installation (Silver Leaf Springs?) that sped away from me too fast to data scan, with some what looked like strange satellites in orbit with no scan details. The strange thing was that the human signal came from the planet which I had discriminated & separated from the Silver Leaf signal.

Am I the only one that doesn’t like the new shader much? It’s good for planet surfaces, but the galaxy is no longer black, the milky way is muddy orange, & the cockpit windscreen is so dirty it’s difficult to see out if the star is shining across it.

I tried mapping the INRA Taylors Keep site and both fss and probe identified it as Guardian!

Also having problems with zoom in system map.

You can get anything from entry point unless it's obscured by primary (or very close star).

All engineering on the DSS is converted to a single one that gives probes a greater surface area. It's the only available scanner mod now since scans are pretty much immediate.

The lighting is a little disconcerting, but it's mostly only close to stars that you get it. In neutron star systems, everything looks a washed out blue instead. I'm not certain if a like it or not, just find it strange.

Ah, yes I should have said I used to have a long range engineered scanner. Haven’t done any engineering with the new update yet. Though Tyko must start that grind soon, he’s almost at the target 200MCr, then the AspX and the grind.....

I like the hypothesis that the DW toast is a set of clues to a journey leading to Raxxla; it would be a resolution of MB’s comment that it’s a journey we all must make. However I’m still dubious since we hear that TDW lost Raxxla (or did Han_Zen correct me on this? My brain is dead), so how come the clues to its location are in their toast? For me it doesn’t hang together as a path to Raxxla, I think it’s more likely that it’s a lead to their dark station.

The hypothesis about Raxxla being a rogue planet was based on the (non-canon) Oolite saga where Raxxla was a rogue, and DB’s livestream comment that Ed Lewis didn’t know what Raxxla is. We know from the journal specification that rogue planets are a mechanism that is in game. to assist the search it was logical therefore to discuss how we might observe a rogue. This hypothesis may still be valid, we still don’t have a clue as to what Raxxla is.

Han_Zen’s hypothesis that Alpha Cygni is involved is interesting also, but that system’s position doesn’t accord with the image from the startup screen, it puts BLoop and Witchhead at the wrong aspect. So I’m still sticking with my hypothesis for the moment.

Though I may be wrong!

Back On Topic. Sorry for text wall. It was some work.
This is what myself and a few others came up with. I see we are not alone on some of our ideas.
Based on the emphasis on the word "To...." in the toast the DW toast is likely a roadmap. Roadmap to what? Who knows?
"To the Jewel that burns on the brow of the Mother of Galaxies"
The Star In Cassiopeia's (Mother of Princess Andromeda) Brow is Zeta Cassiopeia and that is the believed starting point. This would be fitting given the meaning of Zeta Cass has been defined as a by-path or auxillary road.

"To the whisperer in witchspace, the siren of the deepest void!"
From Zeta Cass one of the first things that sticks out is the burning bright NGC 7822 with its beautiful jewel like string of Class O's, but this could be easily missed if this line of the toast was not included. But this line draws your attention toward the rift. Take a look at Zeta Cass for yourself.
Formadine Rift Alpha Settlement
Expedition Log 07/10/3270
"I'm scared... help me someone... I can't bear another jump. The lights in witch-space are coming for me. The lights... always the lights... they're calling to me... a siren song... I must join them..."

At this point the next step is to physically move to the next clue location, NGC 7822. Becuase if you stick around Zeta Cass, you will feel empty handed.

From here we move to the book Astrophel and Stella. We're under the impression that Princess Astrophel and The Spiraling Stars is a reference to the irl book Astrophel and Stella.
From here it's time to move to the Sonnets in the book. I feel that the whole book of sonnets is too much, and the more likely and easier to decipher piece of material is the wiki on the book, which lists only 4 sonnets.

Sonnet 1 appears to show you the struggles of being a truth seeker when it starts with the 3 words, "Loving in truth." But it does not appear to be much more than that.
The next one in the list is Sonnet 9. Which will assist us in our next clue from the toast.

"The parents grief, the lover's woe and the yearning of our vagabond hearts."- At this point these lines may not make sense, so we will refer back the sonnets. It seems to be a jumping back and forth from the toast to the Sonnets.

Sonnet 9 appears to be describing a physical location. We believe this to be NGC 7822.
"Queen Vertues court, some call Stellas face"- is believed to be the face of the NGC 7822 Nebula, like the face of a mountain.

"Prepar'd by Natures chiefest furniture"- is describing a place with the highest grade materials used in its construction.

"Hath his front built of Alabaster pure"- These are likely the bright white Class O's that string across the nebula.

"Gold is the covering of that stately place
The doore by which sometimes comes forth her Grace"- we haven't deciphered this.

"Red Porphir is, which locke of pearl makes sure"- Porphir is a red rock, which the nebula has many many of, as well as what could be deemed Pearls, Class O's.

"Whose porches rich (which name of cheeks endure)"- I can only say that Cheeks endure is a reference to something or someone who is talked about for a long time, generations perhaps.

"Marble mixt red and white do enterlace."- This would be a fitting description for NGC 7822 (And many other nebulas) as both are the prominent colors.

"The windowes now through which this heav'nly guest
Looks over the world, and can find nothing such,
Which dare claime from those lights the name of best."- To many, self included, this is one of, if not the most beautiful nebula and these lines seem to be a confirmation of being in the right place.

"Of touch they are that without touch doth touch"- We believe that this is the Heart and Soul Nebulas.
My heart and my soul may never touch, but they are always touching. They are mutually inclusive. This would give the running joke "Raxxla's inside of your heart" some context.
If you've explored the pearl-like Class O's of NGC 7822 you will find the tourist beacon "Cupids Arrow" in Class-O system, S171 34.
Which leads us to our next clue. The beacons message says "The beautiful NGC 7822 nebula is pierced by a line of O-stars- therefore it has been compared to Cupid's arrow piercing a heart."

At this point we need to direct our attention to the last line of sonnet 9 for confirmation that we're on the right trail,
"Which Cupids selfe from Beauties myne did draw:
Of touch they are, and poore I am their straw."- Seems to be the Cupid reference we were looking for.

From here we move to the next sonnet in the series, #19.
"On Cupid's bow how are my heartstrings bent,
That see my wrack, and yet embrace the same?"- When aligned properly the Class O-s of NGC 7822 align perfectly with Andromeda/Formadine Rift in one direction, and Bubble/Polaris in the opposite direction. We assume we are to be looking toward Andromeda and not the bubble at this point. NGC 281 Nebula is in line with the arrow from NGC 7822 to Andromeda, but we have searched every system in NGC 281 and found nothing.
But turning up nothing may be a good thing, it may be a confirmation of sorts that we need at this point as it affirms the next line.

"When most I glory, then I feel most shame:
I willing run, yet while I run, repent.
My best wits still their own disgrace invent"- This seems to be a sense of frustration with our lack of answers and for repeated failures. For me personally, we chose to follow the path of the "Arrow" rather than to heart nebula and we came up empty handed, frustrated.

"My very ink turns straight to Stella's name"- We have not figured this out. Stellas name is Greek for Star, but how does it apply? Assuming what we are looking for is in this direction.

"And yet my words, as them my pen doth frame,
Avise themselves that they are vainly spent.
For though she pass all things, yet what is all
That unto me, who fare like him that both
Looks to the skies and in a ditch doth fall?"- We haven't deciphered this. Seems to be some inner questioning and personal doubts. Likely how you're feeling if you've been at this for a while.

"Oh let me prop my mind, yet in his growth,
And not in Nature, for best fruits unfit:
"Scholar," saith Love, "bend hitherward your wit."- This one's important because if you went with the literal direction of the "arrow" than you will likely arrive at NGC 281, but arrows don't stay in a permanent line, they fall and the flight path bends, as should your wit. Heart and Soul Nebula are not in perfect line with the "arrow" but they are close and in the same general direction.
If you've ended up in the Heart Nebula you may want to take a break and turn in some data at the Farsight Expedition Base in Heart Sector IR-V b2-0.
Pay sharp attention to the Listening Post in the system and go read about the Memorial to Fluk.

The next Sonnet, #20, is a clear description of being ambushed. We assume that whatever it is we are to find is likely going to try to stop us when it's discovered. So lets get back to the DW toast.

The last lines of the Toast go like this.
"The Parents grief, the lover's woe, and the yearning of our vagabond hearts."- If you've scanned the listening post you will have read about what appears to be the grief of the death of a family dog, Fluk.
At this point our team is assuming that the story of Fluk the family dog is "The Parents Grief" and a sign like the Cupids Arrow beacon, letting us know that we are on the right track.
We have not deciphered "the lover's woe, and the yearning of our vagabond hearts." as this point but are hopeful that an answer will come up.

An interesting factor in the story is in regards to several abandoned settlements that have stated their course took them through the Heart and Soul. Those settlements all experienced equipment failure.
FORMIDINE RIFT DELTA MISSION 2/6
Expedition Log: 12/09/3270

“It’s pretty out here. We’ve seen a gorgeous double nebula called the Heart and Soul. You should see it, lots of bright blue stars nearby, wish we could divert to have a closer look, but our mission is beyond apparently. Really brings back how big the galaxy is. Makes you feel real small and insignificant.”

And that's where we're at...

Edited AfterThought-[Come To think Of It. Fluk closely resembles the word Fluke, meaning luck or random chance. This could be for good reason. Maybe the message is saying, "Next clue's in here and it's random chance you'll find it. Good Luck"]

Assuming the listening posts do not exist prior to the discovery of Raxxla, could the "parent's grief, the lover's woe" refer to Cetus, also assuming some inertia to the Cassiopeia reference?

It was definitely one of the first thoughts we had, but we have not been able to produce any signs to prove it was the right track.

The Dark Wheel Toast begins like this.
"To the jewel that burns on the brow of the mother of galaxies"
Well this here is Cassiopeia, Mother of Princess Andromeda.
The big star in her brow is Zeta Cassiopeia.
