Really, people are tagging first discovered just by honking!

Personally I think "Discovered by" and "Mapped by" tags of inhabited systems is just ridiculous, unless those systems are populated after they are discovered by a CMDR. Seriously, I'm the first one to discover and map an ELW, just days ago, even though there are billions of people living on it? That's like saying I discovered my home town because I was the first person to install GPS in his car....

I would be totally okay if Frontier wiped out all discovery & mapped tags for inhabited systems (which would include a fair share of my own tags).

What I dont understand is how systems in the bubble that players have using for 4 years got undiscovered. Did everything get reset? I'm seeing bodies in my own home system that I scanned ages ago and had been discovered by someone else long before me suddenly say they were just discovered and mapped by the same guy. In the grand scheme, I dont care it's just a spaceship game but I am confused.

Its a DB reading error, see the FD announcement. Re-tagging wont overwrite the existing database but will show your name for a bit. It wont last, so dont bother. :)

Agreed.

Ahh i just read the news bulletin. Yeap i've been mapping everything so no problems.

Hmmm.. im going to go back and refactor my rejected candidates list.

Further, just discovering and not mapping would involve using the FSS ughehhehehehhe no.

Also, wouldnt this be a bit inconsistent? While there are systems that are available now, there are also countless systems that prior were discovered and populated. Did i miss a huge expansion of stations sometime during the first year?

It soils pristine systems that people would otherwise just blaze thru. Why should they get those tags? They didnt work for them and mostly they dont even want the system.
Dude, lighten up.Some people are just in a hurry to get somewhere else.Plenty more stars in the sky.

It may have been covered somewhere already but:
I knew how to honk and did so religiously with the old ADS. How assuming I'm in the Analysis Mode when entering a new system and avoiding the star, does one "HONK" now since the new update.

All my scanners are assigned to the secondary triggger, weapons are all one, and scanner's are all two's.

To answer the last one: there has been a gradual bit consistent expansion of the bubble, but not sure if you refer to that?

Same as before, just hold the honk trigger assigned in the firwgroup panel. If you want to then explore the system further you need to open the fss.

Old way: enter system, honk, point nose at star, go into system map for 20 secs or whatever, star scanned, 1st discovery yours.
New way: enter system, honk, 1st discovery yours (for main star).
20 second difference, not a big deal.
Of all the things wrong with 3.3 exploration, this is isn't one, (IMHO).

Ok, I have my scanner's set to the second trigger, I get to a new system and I must be in analysis mode, got it. When I press the second trigger after avoiding the star, I don't hear anything like I use to when the term "HONKING" was coined by the sound it made when on utilized the ADS.

Presently when I enter some systems and I'm already in analysis mode, there will be some notifcations in blue in the middle of my screen and in the upper right comms menu. I do not ever hear any "HONKING" noise as previously wiht the ADS.

Yeah thats the question, i think the first time i connected to the learning curve was early 16.. and apart from colonia havent noticed any other waves of new stations.

It did take at least 6 months before i got interested enough to pay attention to the community side so could have missed it.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. If I understand the OP's issue, he's complaining that he is not really the first person to visit a system. Well...too bad. That's life. It's not the fault of the new exploration/discovery system.

As for 'first discovered' - strictly speaking, every single star in the galaxy has already been 'discovered' by virtue of the fact that it is there already on the galaxy map along with it's class, spectral type, luminance, etc... You may be the first visitor, but you didn't discover the star.

Also, to reiterate what others have already said in other posts:

  • Your ship will auto scan anything which would have previously been in range of your DSS in the old system. That's fine - it's always been able to detect signals within 1000 LS anyway, and it made no sense that your ship apparently had a blind spot when it came to stellar bodies.
  • For all other bodies, it's not the honk that creates the 'first discovered' tag - it's resolving the actual signal within the FSS that creates it.

What this is really about is that you want to tag an entire system and have your name all over it. If that's the case, go somewhere where no one has been before. If you're constantly seeing first discovered by tags, then it means you're not on such an original path as you thought.

Exploration really is about getting out there to places no one has been to before.

Also, I love the fact that exploration data is now shared across the whole community. It allows me to see very quickly whether I'm treading a well worn path or not.

This is an odd viewpoint. Soils “pristine” systems? They should get the tags because they were the first pilots to honk the stars in the system, why shouldn’t they get the tags? And how can you assume to know how other explorers are feeling or what they want as they travel through a system?

The Elite galaxy is only 0.5% explored after over four years, and there are still literally billions of new systems to explore. I think you might be over reacting just a tad?

I think you might be over reacting just a tad?

Not even a little. If they want thos tags why cant they just go an get them like we have for so long. Auto pilot between systems? oh no.. docking computer let you leave? Oh no... automated system tagging.. omg awesome?

This patch has been a vandalisation of what i used to enjoy in this game.

Now, I am Beyond caring. Have the honk tag the entire system for all I care :)

yeah :( but for me this means im pretty close to quitting. The words "its only £20" keep popping into my head when i see NMS adverts and even tho i know its almost certain to disapoint me in the long run, its cant possibly p me off as much as this.

Games come and go. I have enjoyed the hell out of Elite for 3 years. It has delivered and delivered again.

I'll be sad to have to leave it, but it is what it is.

There wont be another elite. Loads of us here been waiting for this one sinse the 90s at least. I could see many more years tramping around that galaxy had i not been disturbed :D

Yeah, I was in it for the long haul as well. Unfortunatly the way I used to explore was not the true way. I have been doing it wrong for all these years. If we are seeing the new exploration community represented here, I'm not that bothered really. I can do without their divisive nature :)

It's a shame with DWE2 around the corner though.

6 months of in-game time,
I was totally addicted.
Cold turkey sucks.
