Odyssey PLUS performance recommendations?

My Odyssey + arrived today and the setup was simple enough, and it works VERY well.

Coming from the Rift CV1 the bump in resolution is really really nice. The performance hit that comes with it though, not so much.

So I was running the Rift with all settings on VR ULTRA except shadows (low) and the game was always silky smooth.

The same settings with the Odyssey+ however cause noticeable studdering, which I expected given the increase in display resolution.

What I didnt expect was the fact that lowering the quality settings makes little to no difference.. I.E. VR LOW runs only a tiny bit smoother than VR ULTRA.

Has anyone else made a similar change? Have and tips/tweaks? I know the Odyssey+ is pretty new but Im sure someone is has tinkered with it some.

Sys specs:
Win10
i5-7600K@4.5Ghz
RTX 2070 SC
16GB DDR4@3000mhz
2x 256gb SSD RAID 0

It’s all a bit turbulent at the code and server end. Has it worked at all on low vr at all? if so once the environment settles you should be ok. Not on Samsung but certainly over the past week the stability and frame rate have varied immensely.

I'm not sure whats going on here.

For one thing I keep getting disconnection errors from the ED server, was having issues last night as well.

Secondly I started messing with the 3 settings that seem to effect the HMD resolution.

HMD, Supersampling and the setting in steam VR.

for some weird reason Steam VR had set it to 200% based on my hardware. showing a resolution of 2452x3064 per eye.

the O+ only has a resolution of 1440x1600 per eye. So it seemd like SteamVR had it cranked WAY over what the HMD could even display.

So I tried adjusting the slider down to 1440x1600 only to find there is no such resolution. The closest I could get was 1450x1813 (70% on the slider) which is not even the correct aspect ratio but I see no way to change it.

I left the settings for HMD and SS at 1.0 considering steam was already setting the game slightly above its max resolution.

loaded game.. looked like complete garbage, resolution was FAR lower than the rift. performance was "better" with less studdering but the quality was horrendous.

So I tried messing with the HMD and SS settings in game but changing them seemed to have very little to possibly NO effect, even with HMD on 2.0 the text was blurry as hell, way worse than with the rift.

I logged back out and in again messing with the slider on steam VR and leaving the other settings at 1.0 for now so that Im not adjusting too many things at once.

At around 84% on the slider, which is stated to be 1589x1986 I got a image quality similar to the rift, but the performance was god awful, not unplaybable but in stations and asteroid fields there was noticeable studdering.

So as it sits currently, I have to run settings that actually produce image quality MUCH LOWER than the rift to get frame rates on par with the rift.

Im wondering if this is just poor optimization that will eventually be fixed or if I am doing something wrong.

I really wish I could launch the game WITHOUT SteamVR, having the mixed reality portal running, as well as SteamVR running and THEN I can run the game kinda sucks.

With the rift you could launch the game directly from Oculus home.

so TLDR no real progress.

EDIT: I know the Rift has ASW to smooth out frame drops etc etc, does the O+ have similar? I dont see an option for it in the SteamVR settings.

Set it up as i wrote. Steam VR 200%, in game ultra, supersampling in-game 1.0. If you have 1080ti and 2080ti you can set HMD SS in game to 1.25 or 1.5, but you will hit reprojection. In my opinion on 1.0 is better and looks very similar to 1.25.
The 'most' important is to change renderTargetScale parameter from 1.0 to 2.0 on wmr vr steam config file.

I will be glad if FDev bring native WMR support, (without steamvr layer).

That renderTargetScale parameter change made a huge difference for me, way more than changing either supersampling parameter in Elite, and the best part is that it's essentially free in terms of performance. Right now I've got both SS and HMD quality set to 1.0, and all text in the game is easily readable.

A few things I've found that improve visual quality without having much (if any) effect on frame rate:

* Set the various texture resolution settings to max. That only eats up VRAM, not GPU compute resources, and it makes a huge difference because everything around you in the cockpit looks a lot more realistic.
* Disable antialiasing, you get zero benefit given the low resolution of all current HMD's and you get a few FPS back
* From the nvidia control panel, set anisotropic filtering to x8 for elitedangerous64.exe. It removes a lot of shimmering from far away objects, and if there's any perf impact I can't tell. Setting it to x16 doesn't seem to make any difference vs x8.
* Don't fear reprojection. The warping it introduces is mostly visible during hyperspace, when everything looks weird anyway, and it lets you max out other visual quality settings. Other than hyperspace, I only notice it in menus and in the front part of the SRV's wheels when driving at high speed.

OK! so that helped A LOT!!

On your recommended settings Im getting MUCH better performance than before, and the image quality leaves the rift in the dust.

Im still getting some studdering in asteroid fields and at stations so Ill need to tweak it a tad I think but it is GREAT compared to before!!

One of the first things to crank down is ambient occlusion. It's very expensive and the effect is kinda subtle. Also turn off depth of field and blur, you don't want those in VR anyway.

And the list of settings to play with and test continues to grow! Thanks, will work my way through these in the next week or so...

Hi guys i've got the odyssey plus but cant figure out how to start the renderer in the headset: in the graphic options,in the dropdown menu i dont have hmd options , only monitor options available.
I start steamVR and then Elit Dangerous launcher, after that i hear only the sound in the hearphone of the plus...
Much oblidge for your help

In steam do you have Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR installed? If you don't search for it, install and try ED again.

Hi, yes Mixed reality installed, when i launch the game i hear the sound of ED and ( inside steam vr ) the windows that loads something...
