Am I the only one who hopes our Ships *don't* get atmospheric landing?

Lol I watched it 2 weeks ago. Probably my fave film of all time and I have bought in just about every format going over the years.

I just recently bought an updated version, and it had scenes that I had never seen before.

Newt's family, the sentry guns, a conversation with Burke.

Good stuff, all of it.

Atmospheric landing? No thank you.
Being forced into orbital flight if you get too close and having a few precious seconds to appreciate the poor aerodynamics of your space box before creating an interesting smear across the landscape? Yes please.

I'd love atmo landings to be put into the game. It just feels unfinished without them, what with some planets you can land on and some you can't because of an invisible barrier. This may just be nostalgia talking, but I miss that Elite II start where you are on the surface of Merlin in the Ross 154 system. Listening to the wind and looking up through the purple sky at the gas giant of Aster looming overhead. Sometimes I just landed on random planets just to see what the sky looked like.

Space is cool. The more celestial bodies we can interact with the better.

I want to land at New York City and six other cities on Earth in Sol circa 3305. It's 3304 game time. I want to see the sites, go into a bar and talk with live players. I don't care if it is just another planetary computer generated station to start with. Texting and voice only is OK with me while we look at the bar visuals. Later on maybe we could have a bar fight but for now we are only holograms.

Previous games had to add an atmospheric module to enter atmospheres. Maybe the 70s version of a NASA heat shield. Still below a certain altitude speed was was reduced for the final approach or still burn up. Maybe lots of weather, huge cities, amazing sunset skylines and renting a 3305 Toyota to drive around will come later. A Dacia Sandero sold in the U.K. in 3305? I'd be more interested in the Aston Martin or Rolls Royce versions. Meanwhile the USA Corvette might be there as well. I love dreaming. :)

Yes Op you're alone in that, I want atmospheric landings the same way they had them in Frontier and First Encounters 25 years ago, and I see absolutely nothing strange or wrong about having them. In fact NOT having atmo landings makes zero sense IMO.

If there's a planet in the way decelerating is easy.

Managing to make planetfall as something other than crater ejecta is the potentially difficult bit... :)

Mission accomplished, time bonus! [yesnod]

I thought that in Lore, most of Earth had been - if not rendered uninhabitable at some point, then at least become somewhat less...
Isn't that why they moved the capital to Mars?

Water wise I think the lore already has us covered. Iirc in elite lore of the ships we know exist only the dolphin, orca, beluga AND Moray Starboat are capable of twinning as a submersible....

I thought it was just the Moray. I've never seen anything in lore about the 3 whales being submersible, other than speculation in the forum due to their name.
Otherwise, in lore, only the Adder (from the original game) could enter atmosphere - though I suppose due to similar design the FDL could too... In Wagar's books, so could the iCourier. Not seen any lore about others. Of course, from streams etc, they want a lot more capable, and a lot of the ships now look like they could do it easily.

Of course, there's more to it than just being able to land. Not many of them would be able to do a lot of high speed manoeuvring in a dense atmosphere...what with friction heating and the like. A T9 for instance would be a sitting duck for attackers.

I think a reason to leave earth (for the most part) was to preserve its ecology, in contrast to several (former) colonies that removed annoying lifeforms.

The Thargoid weapons and experimental effects can corode our hull over time, I am sure there are planets which atmospheres that are not as inviting for longer visits compared to others.

Fair enough on the leaving Earth bit...
For the rest, certainly. Venus circa 2018 would be a challenge...

I thought it was just the Moray.
And not even that. In the old Elite it was the vessel of choice for water based aliens to hold an aquatic environment *inside* when they were roaming the stars. In Frontier it was turned into a space vessel based on an old design for a seafaring battleship. The Moray being a submarine spaceship is a continuously repeated misinformation.

Jeez you don't want much do you?

Still where would the human race be without the dreamers. Hope it all comes true in this Elite or the next.
