There's no winning or losing this argument, it's a mostly philosophical discussion.

Also to be fair, the only argument to be made against the current status quo of Free-for-all murdering is indeed the emotional one, since the negative consequences inflicted on the murder victims in this case are also mostly emotional / psychological. But I wouldn't expect a psychopath to even begin to understand that.

Eh, the only PvP loss I've had the entire year was when some bag of duches saw my Twitch stream and asked to join my CZ wing. They then waited for my shields to drop from the CZ and proceeded to destroy my ship when I wasn't expecting.

I then switched to my PvP build and proceeded to hunt them down, repeatedly.

Ego-driven behavior is mostly from the side of seal clubbers getting an ego-boost from the "salty tears" of their victims.

Victims not wanting to lose their ingame progress (and effectively losing RL time) are not by definition being motivated by their ego, but self-preservation. Again, wouldn't expect a psychopath to empathize with that.

Edit: I hope you realize most players are not making billions per-day, and often losing a rebuy means losing several hours of work - but you already knew that.

I was playing in Solo originally. Only switched to open to join up with who I thought was a friendly player wanting to join in on the fun. Boy was I wrong.
Also I did not broadcast my location, as I had black rectangles (added by OBS) covering the portion of the HUD that displays such information and have a hot-key set to completely hide the game screen (static image overlay) when I open the Galaxy map, station UI, etc.

And no, I don't think they were NaCL, but it's hard to be sure since this happened pre-squadrons.

I was going to do the CG, as soon as I jumped into the system CNDR [Redacted] Interdicted me, I ended up boosting away but he did it again. And I always thought I was pretty good at beating interdictions, but what I normally do had no affect.

I was in a Corvette and My Shields didn't last very long. The 2nd time he and a wing man, got me.

Am I to assume one should use private to do CGs?

Just wanted to get some opinions.

This is something that happens in most every game that offers PvP, some people are not looking for a challenge, they enjoy disrupting the game for others, and that is why they do it, because they can and because they enjoy attacking those that either can't fight back or in situations where the other is hopelessly outgunned, they enjoy the powertrip.

It is a sad but rather revealing thing that PvP shows about people. That said there are a limited amount of people that do, do it for a reason, but those generally interact in one way or another with the person they are attacking before destroying them, most alas do not do this.

Not really, it comes from the fact that when you give people the ability to do something, some people will chose to do the worst of the worst action for no other reason then they enjoy it, and often simply because they enjoy the anonymity of the internet, there are effectively no consequences for them acting as the do.

I see it as a mechanism for people to act upon their lack of empathy, and vent out their frustration via behavior that society generally deems unacceptable and would normally lead to their ostracization or eventually jail time.

And there it is, the standard reply, the standard behaviour, the standard defence of your actions, which tons of other griefers have done exactly the same way, I've taken up such offers over the years, and learned that what you are doing is for your fun, which is fine actually, you are supposed to have fun with the games you play.

But when that fun comes exclusively at the cost of others, then there is a problem, not for you, but for others, and many other games have ended up limiting the games in unfortunate ways to deal with griefers, hurting the game, because griefers cannot see the damage they are doing.

Go do actual PvP, where there is a near equal risk for all involved, rather then griefing, but experience tells me that really isn't going to happen, but dang would I love to be wrong.

Time where you're enjoying yourself is not wasted (even when applied to non-productive endeavors). Most of the time when people are playing ED, I assume they are enjoying themselves (with varying degrees, depending on what they're doing and with what goal in mind) - whilst working towards their next ingame goal.

Losing that progress is nullifying most of that time investment. Especially worse since the most profitable activities in ED tend to be the most boring (for combat oriented players at least), and forced on you out of necessity to be able to continue enjoying the other aspects of the game.

Your subject line immediately sets you up with a problem. There's ALWAYS a reason.
Most of the reasons just come down to players playing Elite. (BGS influencing, Power Play, Role play whatever character they are trying to invent...probably a long list) They add immersion and danger to the game. Choosing the mode in which there's a risk of meeting them is a choice we all make.

However, there are also reasons that have nothing to do with Elite. Reasons like just wanting to ruin the game experience for another player. Those reasons have nothing to do with playing Elite. The reasons are now outside the 4th wall because it becomes about trying to provoke negative responses or draw attention to themselves in the real world. These players are just using Elite as a tool to bully. It could be any game really, they just chose this as their playground. Luckily the developers have given us the ability to just log out, and add them to your block list.

It's a slippery slope though. Separating players playing players vs players playing Elite is tough and a lot of the time a few bad apples ruin it for a lot of players that actually add to the game experience as a whole.

Time is the only true commodity an individual truly has. A very limited commodity for most people with jobs.

Regardless of your employment status, the average life expectancy is around ~80 years for the western world (give or take a few depending on the country), making time one of the most limited and precious commodities in the world.

What goalposts did I change? My entire argument has revolved around the fact that inflicting loss on the victim is one of the main motivators for griefers. Given it's a videogame, the only real loss is that of the time invested in recouping the lost credits. Nothing inconsistent or contradictory about what I wrote.
