Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I always wanted to make one of these looping thingies, lol.

Happy New Year Tyres :) I've been away from the cockpit for a week, I'm looking forward to getting back to some flying at the weekend and shooting up the magma field I am parked up in! For now, I'm watching the Vienna New Year's Day concert, and drinking coffee; a civilised pastime for the day :)

Well. Time to try something new.

This is going to be a real learning process so lots if mistakes and bloopers incoming.

Mining.

Now, as my Clipper is gathering rust, I thought it was time to bring her back out and provide a useful role in my fleet. I have a feeling this isn't an ideal ship but, hey ho.

I think I have all the tools I need but it really looks like Ray Gateway has had a downgrade - it now lacks 5A FSDs so my first trip in the miner - may rename her "Red Dwarf" and get a respray - will be rectifying that.

Mining, I found, was really quite boring for little profit, so I'm going to give another go and hope to find some opals.

Just FYI, Opals aren't by any means the most expensive thing you can mine for. It very much depends on the station's demand, so don't shy away from Alexandrite, Grandidierite and other "ites" - they have much higher base price. :)

Great tip! Thank you!

Well, my first try at this has been an epic fail. I thought I had an idea at what to do but, it seems, I don't. Back to learning fings. :( Going to try and find some tutorials. It's the first day of school, fellas.

One thing to watch for when mining in a Clipper - the hardpoint positions means that the new mining tool shots come from way out on the side of the ship so you have to massively over-compensate for that when aiming, especially when your ship is close to the roid. It's good fun tho!

I struggled for quite a while with Arthur Scargill, my old mining Clipper, due to the new tools and the hardpoint positioning. After trying every combination of positions and trying to learn how far to adjust my shots I ended up having to give up and strip it of all the tools to use in a Python.

It’s a shame as I loved mining amid all that Imperial opulence but I just couldn’t get it to work for me.

I’m missing out on all this mining business at the moment, I’m out in Colonia with no mining ships or modules and feeling a little daft that my last mining sessions (after the latest release) were all unimaginatively focused on the old three Ps.

I think you should be able to buy the new mining tools even in Colonia. In my experience every station I've been in, so far, has at least some of them

Oh that’s great news, thanks. I hadn’t actually checked even though I’ve bought and outfitted a cargo Python since coming out here. I’d just been wondering today whether there’d be a nice quiet spot chock full of void opals (..crystals or whatever they are) out here. I’ll check later tonight and hopefully be able to learn to recognise those fissures :)

They are now all bundled together under "Mining tools" so they are easier to overlook
