If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Well, I can only speak from my own experiences, but just last night I happened upon a discovery. Let me share a little bit of the story:

There I was was, out in the middle of nowhere, jumping, honking, scooping, FSS-scanning, mapping worlds that caught my particular attention. Sometimes it was because that world had some geological or biological point of interest. Other times just because the planet was interesting to me in some way - an ammonia world of unusual coloration, a gas giant with interestingly contrasting rings, a water world with a massive ice-cap, or a high metal world that could pass itself off as an Earth-like world. In one particular system I mapped a peculiar colored water world. Right next to it was another world that caught my eye. The little sliver of it that was illuminated showed this to be one of those atmospheric worlds that resemble some kind of odd candy, with ice caps and a smooth appearance. What happened next though, as I came around the planet, intending to grab a screen-shot, well, it's the stuff of legend.

Some of you may have already seen this, some of you have not. But it wasn't the FSS that led me to this particular planet. It was just plain old explorer's curiosity. And perhaps a secret, subconscious desire to spit my drink in my lap. I can't say with certainty. But I do know it's wasn't some bit of data on the FSS. It wasn't the planet's appearance on the System Map.

They used to give out free maps of the area before the receptionists company arrived and bought everythng up against the wishes of the locals. It has been said ever sinse that the character of the area has changed.

Pls no more :D

Is that meant to be some bizarre analogy?

Well something happened last night which I thought I'd never do.... I played SC. For hours! Whole cities to explore, Missions with story and depth, very very enjoyable! A long way to go yet, but it is now playable, PvE & PvP. Space legs and combat on the ground. Walk around your ship, heck you can go asleep while you travel! Ships don't go dead while hyper-jumping!

While Elite is great in VR, it's a mish-mash of disjointed ideas, Badly written, untested, but.. Looks astounding. SC is starting to make Elite look like what it is. A 1984 game with 2014 graphics. It's a crazy idea, but I think SC is actually the better game now, and getting stronger by release. Obviously a topical even mad idea, but that's what I think. The downside is the cost to get into it. 380 Euro for my ship.

Elite is not dead... But it is showing its age now.. Whack-A-Mole mechanics.. LoLs

My shillings worth,

If a system:

Doesn't have a nav beacon.
Hasn't been visited and uploaded to UC.

Then you have to map the place yourself, using the new FSS tool, or eyeball it.

Unfortunately for you, gone are the days of instant system map check for all the good ones and move on to the next system as quickly as you can.

You can still get a system map, you just need to put a bit of effort in now.

Deep down you know it makes sense.

I am afraid to push the humour too far. Best to stay on topic i think.

This game is drama in waiting. You know that somebody can buy a ship for like £50k or whatever nonsense and then it can be taken off them in game? As in stolen if i am understanding all things correctly. Cant wait to see how that pans out. This will cause digital goods to have the same value as physical goods in law or some such simlar result.

Wait and see on SC anyone who ever tries to sell you a product for tens or even hundreds of times what its worth isn't on the level. $60 for a released triple A game, $27,000 for SC's bestest ship pack (that doesn't even come with all the ships). It makes my spidey sense tingle.

If you don't close the hatches another player can take your ship for a joyride, they don't get to keep it. Close your hatches and they can only look at it.

Agree,

The expense of a top spec pc, along with even a mid price game has put me off from the start. Don't really care how it plays.

ED fits me perfectly for now especially if they keep on updating it with better things.

I am unsure what that has to do with the topic in hand. One thing I will say though is that there is no hyperjump in SC. There is the quantum drive which is the equivalent to supercruise is ED. I much prefer supercruise as I control where I direct my ship you do not get that in SC, well not the last time I played.

Now back on topic. I have no idea what any of that has to do with the exploration mechanics or radio tuning.

I wouldn't call it effort, more like tedium, delivered by a cruddy minigame.

lol indeed. Good one.

Making the planet/system scan even more tedious and repetitive with the FSS scanner, definately spoiled the fun in exploration.

"Hell is all about repetition!" (Quote: Colm Feore - Storm of the Century)

Making exploration an out-of-cockpit dial and zoom mini-game is a huge immersion break for me as well. Elite: Dangerous has always been about the first person cockpit for me, be it ship or SRV.

Another nail in the coffin for me.
