If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Having read some of the arguments by experianced explorer's I am persuaded a compromise would not be entirely bad if FD were willing, but who's compromise is the killer question. I wouldn't want full ADS reinstatement because as I stated in the explorer thread long ago I'm ok with you getting type but not position ( the FSS ) or position but not type ( the ADS-minus ).
So a gray ball system map/orrery with no indication of type or size, just all the same ' ball' I could agree with. Would FD bother and would others agree? Seems like there is no true compromise position but as I've stated I could be convinced because I hate to see some of the explorer 'faces' so downcast with the new setup.

FDEVs intention was to upgrade the game, frustration by a few is inevitable. A few claim to be frustrated by anything at all regardless of them having quit years ago. Free stuff/paid stuff/removed or added stuff makes no difference to that its a permanent state.

If you regard it as an actual problem with the game, which I clearly don't.

There is conflict between the two, the ADS renders the FSS irrelevant as it does it all from the honk making the FSS pointless. ED was always going to change over time we all knew this buying in (or should have). The downside is a waste of devtime and loss of potential in a good update. If FDEV wanted to keep them both they would have, clearly they didn't want to do that.

I think if there is a demographic that can be ignored it's those that no longer play. I am not trying to solve every issue for every player, just this one. The addition of the ADS to the current (3.3) discovery process will not create any mechanical compatibility issues.

The ADS doesn't render the FSS useless, in fact the argument is normally the other way around :D

The honk provides only basic data, or at least not all data. This data is available in the FSS Scanner Screen only, my proposal makes use of that same basic data that the FSS (before any discovery is done) and allows a different slice of the pie. This is all laid out in my proposal here:

A More Advanced Discovery Scanner

No extra info, just the same basic info the FSS provides, displayed in a different way. Anyone familiar with the data provided by the ADS honk can understand the benefit of having this in the game, anyone who is not (new players etc) can either make use of it's simple operation and interface or just use the FSS and ignore the ADS altogether.

More choices, more player agency, more chances to find the stuff each player is looking for, it really would be the best of both worlds with no downside.

I think FDev did want to cause frustration to as few players as possible and overlooked the opportunity to retain the old modules when the changes were made in beta.

It's just a simple oversight, and one that needs to be corrected, preferably sooner rather than later. I accept that you do not think this is a problem but since it does no harm and would not affect any player that does not want to fit one it should be implemented as soon as possible.

I'd like to remind you that this has all been covered before, including with you, the situation is clear.

Perhaps it would help if you were to explain (or link to a post that explains) why you feel it's important to choose one of the compromises you state. We all look for different things and we probably all used only certain parts of the initial ADS reveal, but different parts from one another. On the basis that anyone that misses the ADS might want any of the basic data it provided with the Honk, and that there is no technical reason why it couldn't be put back in fully intact , my proposal is simply to put the complete thing back in. Would you want a different module that offers different information? Would others want to buy that module instead of an ADS, or as well?

There's been no word from Frontier that it's intentional or oversight.

Putting ADS back in will affect every player - these things don't work by magic, they need developers to code and QA's to test. That's devs and QA who will be pulled off current projects that bring new stuff for everyone. I would rather them crack on with progress, not go backwards for the benefit a small handful of vocal forum users.

This is what I mean by no compromise suits all. I am against full restoration and would therefore have to stick to my initial position of let the ADS die. I am fine with a rough system layout but you seem to demanding a exact layout with all bodies identified, just as it is. I don't think one scanner should give all the info' which is why I think you should get some not all. So back to intractable positions I guess. Down with the ADS...

I know you are proud of your proposal, you plug it nearly every post. But you might want to mention that it is receiving very little support as well.

Damn there goes your Nobel Peace Prize for Mediating Compromises where none are required!

How about if my hired NPC crew member could FSS scan for me?

At a much slower rate than a human, but at least it'd make them do something apart from combat (where they automatically kill stuff), and let me look for pretty stuff while ignoring the mundane scanning task.
Afterall isn't that why you hire minions, to do the boring stuff ;)

You are starting out from an incorrect assumption that players don't get frustrated (or even pretend to be because internet) anyway and that FDEV were trying to avoid it. Its just part of any upgrade.

I’m hoping that FD will look again at this, consider the negative feedback and come to a compromise.

Considering the Cmdr who initiated this thread can't be bothered to make another post in his thread, and the negative feedback is only from a handful of respondents, then yes, FD will consider the feedback and hopefully do the right thing and ignore it :D

So a little update;

Started out on DW2 last night and after 1000ly out, decided to try the FSS out in all it's glory.

In VR it sucks. It sucks big time. So I dropped back to flat screen. FSS fits much better on flat screen and is much easier to use, fits in with the 2D landscape and yes, is better than the old way. As an aside, the amount of first discovered's I got between 1k out and 2.5k out was very surprising!

I still think the twidly idea and the sounds are straight form 1950s b movie, So I have renamed it to the Frankenstein S*** storm :)

In other news, my plan now is to modify a HID to make it easier to use. Takes up way too many buttons on my main controller.

So, in 2D great! in VR it's suckage.

I'm not devastated as I'm not much of an explorer but it definitely isn't a smooth system. I like doing two things at once when I get the chance but now I have to stop flying my ship to use it. As a result I've never used it.

I hate stopping. I'm also the kind of guy that will struggle, swear and end up in a bad mood because I refused to make two trips to carry the groceries in. I'm just stubborn and hate using two arms to carry something when one will do. I like to press "LAUNCH" and then go to the map and quickly set a course before my landing gear disconnects. I get really irritated with myself when I'm not fast enough.

There's enough about the new system that irritates me that I'm not going to use it for a while. Took me a year to get over my grudge with engineering.

So this is my opinion but it's not too well informed so it's worth jack. I don't really have a horse in this race but wanted to add my 2 cents.

I always thought the ADS should have had a limited range and only reveal grey disks until the bodies get scanned by DSS or are within visual range.
One honk to know everything was a dumb system.
This system at least has some detail to it.

Feedback was given over and over by many people since the reveal, but the abomination that is the FSS was foisted onto us regardless.
People keep banging on about the same people not liking it, but were fine with the same three people hijacking every single thread on the subject prior to release to keep telling us how the FSS was the best thing since sliced bread - hypocrisy.

Exploration was my main activity in the game since the galaxy was opened in premium beta, but not anymore because I haven't even downloaded the 'update'.
I'm not happy with the way the rug was pulled out from under a percentage of us or the contemptuous mealy mouthed excuse from FDev, so they can shove their game where the sun doesn't shine if they don't fix it.

In any case, when the 'ooh look new shinies' and novelty has worn off and people wake up to the new grind wall and the time sink of scanning down 99% of nothing most of the time I suspect there will be very few people exploring in a few months.

I think FD got suckered tbh. There seems to be a terrible need to stop us getting the ADS back. Obvious agenda at work. Who knows why? I dont even care i just want to play my game.

At least the FSS meant that I got some room back on my desk after putting my hotas away. So, that’s something I suppose. That’s the main improvement I have from the FSS.

Like I said, we are in the same canoe paddling in opposite directions. Today I'm moving ED to an external drive to make room for some new games I just "invested" in. I love the FSS, but there's so much else wrong with the game that my heart just isn't in it anymore.

Now unlike many of you, I recognize that the design choices that Frontier has made that ruins other aspects of game for me, like combat and mining, those design choices (cough flaws cough) are here to stay. Yes, I'm letting everyone know my displeasure in the appropriate threads, but I have no delusions that Frontier will "fix" anything. ED will always remain in my library, and I'll play it on occasion, but I've abandoned all hope that it'll every be the game it once promised to be. Thankfully, to quote Yoda, "There is another."

BTW, this isn't the first time I've shelved the game. Ironically it was the FSS that got me playing again! Perhaps some future update will do the same.

If I wanted a "light-switch flicking" game I would have rather bought an old light switch.

Longing for the Honk ?

I don't find it tedious. Yet.

It's certainly less tedious than flying to every single planet to scan them.
