The bottom line is, it's an MMO. There are going to have people who want to avoid player conflict, and there are going to be people who only want player conflict. At least Elite Dangerous gives you a solid option of opting in. If you choose not to use that option, you accept the result and you are the only person held liable for it.
If you don't want that sort of conflict, then don't put yourself in that sort of situation to encounter it.
Agreed. The great majority of the posters to this thread would have at the onset made damn well sure they were in a PG or Solo had they decided to join DW2. Myself, I'm so aware of the dangers in Open that I didn't log into Open mode until I had unlocked all the engineers and had a fully grade 5 A rated engineered ship.
However, there are always those that for some reason or other fall by the wayside and make unfortunate decisions. This thread is about improving
their safety. Of course, most of us realize that those who were blown up in Pallaeni are ultimately responsible for making the extremely poor choice of logging into Open. In addition, those of us who almost never make such foolhardy decisions could simply go on our merry super competent ways, oblivious to that massacre; but I, for one, am uncomfortable with simply allowing natural selection to brutally weed out my fellow Commanders.
Perhaps this is foolishness on my part. Maybe those Commanders who were annihilated don't care or even want "help." Is caring about needless and unnecessary but mostly inevitable destruction a complete waste of time? Should I simply accept that preventable mayhem will
always occur?
Since bullies will always be bullies and the thoughtless and uninformed will often make poor decisions, I am definitely fighting a seemingly futile battle.
However, apart from the philosophical issues, there may be a pragmatic and unemotional solution to be found. And I hope and think that Phisto's thread may be just that.
