If I wanted a 'radio-tuning' game I would have rather bought an old radio.

Yep. You refused to use it right? All that becomes really apparent in the first few hours / days of using it. All you said is very true.

I did indeed. Its nothing but vandalism to me. It was obvious to me what the thing was and what its effects would be. Watching the live stream just confirmed my views.

If it was me, I would have modelled some kind of "VR headset" on an extendable arm, bolted to the side of the pilots seat.
Whenever you access the galmap/sysmap, access a station-menu or play with the FSS/DSS there'd be an animation showing you reaching across, grabbing the "headset" and pulling it across, into your field of view until it fills the screen - ideally leaving a blurred border around the edge of the "headset" display, where you can still see the cockpit.

Even that tho, imagine the 1000th time you watched that animation. You would be begging for a skip it button. This is exactly why the FSS is bad. Its repetative and you cant escape from it. It has little or nothing to do with actual gameplay (as it was understood pre FSS)

Edit: i do this edit instead of making new post :) Think about the docking elevator, do you wish it would hurry up? Wish that mashing spacebar would make it go away... you just want to get out the station dont you? No reason for you to watch your ship moving and being spun round. Same thing.. same thing as the wheezy aliens sample in witch space, game devs should be picking up on basic stuff like this. The elevator is a chore but at least its only now and then, the FSS is evry damn jump!

Uhuh,

Like I said, it's just one aspect of my issues with these things.

Setting aside the FSS completely, it's always bugged me that the galmap/sysmap are completely abstract from the game.
It feels like you're pulling up the map-screen on a game like Total War, plotting where you're going to move your battalions to and then going back into the game to do other stuff.
In a spaceship game that relies heavily on the "seat of your pants" feeling, that's always been an immersion-breaker.

At least the station-menu looks kind of "holographic", like you're sitting in your ship and all that stuff is being displayed in your ship, on a screen that fills your FOV.
Be nice if the other stuff, at least, worked in a similar way.
And, of course, it always helps with cohesion if these things are consistent.

As for the FSS, itself, I can't believe what we have is genuinely the best system that a bunch of smart people could come up with after several weeks/months of thinking about it.
There's something wrong with, literally, almost every aspect of the FSS, unfortunately.
It's dull, tacky, repetitive, implausible, convoluted, anachronistic, obtuse, constraining, fiddly and generally unpleasant to look at.
Yes, it absolutely gets a job done but so does a Trabant.

Look at this, this is why we are stuck with the FSS and as you can see these posters got attention right from the top.... "the exploration changes are textbook good game design" This has to be deliberate misleading...I mean is that person a game designer or sometihng? Im sure i wouldnt buy their work.

FD listened to these people and broke the game for everybody else and is now being hard nosed about the whole thing. What the actual?

Wow, David Braben responded to that post. Lost cause i think. Their community management seems obsessed with reddit for some reason.. guess they like the only positive feedback rule they have.

Also why does everyone swear on reddit?

Hardline white knights that swear. Well that's why i left i guess.

And look where that policy has got them. There is no reason they cant have their little game, i dont even mind if they get special treatment like the DWE people are but after watching last nights live stream and listening to their little speeches about how inclusive they are all and community community... faced with some evidence that doesnt entirely ring true does it? Especially if you happen to be in one of the groups that is not included and is told adapt or leave.

The community management when compared to actual developer behaviour has been offensive and disconnected from their behavior for many years. I've stopped caring about that to be honest and just accepted those people are just doing their jobs.

They behave like they're a progressive studio but are in fact like blizzard or worse. The only time it still is annoying is when fresh community people come in swooning like frontier are a nice little indie dev expecting them to be taken seriously... and then have the community team pretending they are by saying stuff like "were looking at it", but zero output change.. ever... not once in history.

Anyhoo... if there's a change in guard we have a chance that well, they'll try something different anyway.

I so much wish they sell the franchise, or just the Stellar Forge patent, to one of these really creative Ukrainian or Russian teams who make wonders with little £ but tons of LOVE!

Can you please stop with the hyperbole. People like it. People that have been exploring in ED for a long time like it. Poeple that thought the old way was awful like it. People that liked the old way like it too. And from what I can tell a very small minority who do all types of gameplay do not like it. Such is life.

It is good game design. Just a design you are not overly fond of. It is very flexible and allows you to explore in different ways. As to the stream, from what I can tell Will was buckyballing it to the station to take part in the CG. I am also on distant worlds 2 and I am not buckballing it (hence the reason why I am 50 jumps away), but have been having a blast actually exploring planets and visiting POI's.

At least doing the scanning breaks up the monotony of bucky balling it the old way. That was soul destroying.

Anything that populates an unexplored system map with a honk, is a no-go for me.

Let the god-honk rest in peace.

Did you read Stealthie's post? It would only populate the system map with a representation of the data already found by using the current honk in the FSS. It wouldn't populate the map with the data you find by tuning or zooming in unless you've already done that.
