ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Update

I don't know what I did but, tonight I tinkered with the rift and went back into ED. Played for 3 hours straight nary a quiver from the 'ol stomach.

The entire experience was different from my first. Everything looked right. Menus easy to read and the immersion was incredible.

Still needs 4k to be holodeckish but it damn close. Just sitting in my sidewinder was amazing.

I actually felt like I was in the cockpit. Best OR experience for me by far. No sickness at all. Brilliant but no more ED on regular monitor for me.

Since I don't have stereo vision so to say(only see with one eye at a time) it seems I am lucky enough to only get slightly dizzy from roller coaster demos. While I notice almost every friend I let try things with the rift gets super dizzy from almost any controllable first person games where you walk around and turn your body using controls. Strangely that I had no issues with that.

I could play http://store.steampowered.com/app/252550/ four hours even but I havent managed to find anyone else that can even be in it for more than a few minutes without getting dizzy. :O

(there is a free demo and it has good rift support)

Has SLI made a difference with the DK2?

I've got an Nvideo 660 GTX, and I figure when I get the CV1, I'll have to either get a second one and run SLI, or upgrade the card. Right now, I'm hitting 30 fps in space stations, and 60 out in space.

By the time CV1 shows up - GTX 660 will be a bottom range card, so I'm sure your best option will be to upgrade card, at this point SLI setups and Oculus introduce latency issues, which may be resolved till then, but who knows, still long time to wait :)

Yeah the rift really needs 75fps constant and vsync for the illusion and magic to be in full effect. You'll need at least something like a 680 / 780 for the consumer version.

I have a 670 which is managing OK but can't keep buttery smooth the whole time, even on the lowest graphic settings. Sure, Elite will be optimised etc before release, but the consumer rift is likely going to have a higher res screen (1440p instead of the current 1080p) which will put even more strain on the gpu.

To be honest, I'm now doubtful that even 1440p will be enough. 2160p will be a lot better, but not many cards around right now can comfortably throw out 75fps stereo rendering at that resolution!!

In five years though, this tech will be insane.

So what does CV stand for, consumer version?

Yep. :)

And what is the 4k?

4K is 3840 x 2160 resolution. DK2 is currently 960 x 1080 per eye. It's great, but it can make text hard to read & cause other weird artifacts depending on the setup.

I read that it is max res of 1080 current DK but that the retail version will have higher res and probably be wireless, is that correct?

Possibly, but at the moment it's all speculation really. Higher res is more or less a definite, but everything else is up for debate. ;)

The only way I think it (wireless) would work is if they moved some of the graphics processing onto the Rift itself. Like the Gear VR, where the phone does all the work inside the headset.

Glad to hear the sim sickness is wearing off for you quickly :)

Been lurking here for a while but have rarely posted.

I've been using my DK2 for ED for around 3 weeks now, and have noticed that since updating to the SDK 0.4.2. beta, the graphics in-game really have sharpened up a lot. Kudos to Oculus for this. I used to get quite a noticeable "blur" or "haze" around the planet names and on most of the writing in the menus, however they are substantially easier to read now, also the game world looks better also to my eyes.

Although I use Bilago's VR game manager and have my Rift set to primary @75hz, I still get judder using the Rift though it's not enough to destroy the immersion. I do tend to run things on high detail with AA off. 780 GTX ti and 2600K @ 4ghz.

The most irritating thing that I've found is that I have to press F12 to reset my rift every few minutes. It's as though my position in the ship keeps slipping over time, to the point where I'm staring through the mesh of the pilot body. Hitting F12 resets it, only for it to manifest itself a few minutes later. Not game breaking but damn irritating.

Considering Elite support was created using a much older SDK, I've otherwise been nothing but impressed with the DK2 and ED so far, and I'm hoping it can only get better.

Along with the X55 Hotas, it's simply the best gaming experience I've ever had in my own home. :)

I doubt a GTX 680 will be enough for CV1 - I currently have 2 of them and I fully expect having to upgrade when CV1 hits, regardless of added SLI support.

After taking the rift off for the first time and thinking of the CV1, My first thought was this.

@Mazhurg: Here is some discussion on the topic: https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2086. In theory it should add latency - the fact most people don't notice it is because most demos (unity engine) don't support it, thus just ignoring the second GPU.

I'm very eager to test the added SLI in Beta 2 though...

That thread related very much to previous SDKs, and DK1. Work has progressed in both the rendering of the rift, and in video cards drivers capabilities. As such, some tests related to the current crops of drivers and hardware could prove to be interesting. I don't have SLI (HD with bridge crossfire system here) and know that there has been tremendous (and still WiP) improvements to the drivers in the last year. I'd expect that its not much different in the Nvidia side of the equation.

Has the calculated added frame lag been measured, of is it just theoretical? With the refresh rate upped to 75Hz, how much does that forecast 16ms latency drop? It will be interesting to see as thing progress.

Yeah not sure what I was thinking with that 680 comment! A 690 would probably be OK though.

Anyway, I love it. Makes the game so much more. I played an hour or two on the rift last night, no sickness, zoned out a few times and forgot I was playing a game! Haha. It was kinda like a weird dream or something! :)

Though having said that, I'm hatching plans to take advantage of eBay madness, order another one and use the profits to help upgrade me from a 670 to a 780..

Anyone else noticing a drop in framerates since the last update. I am regularly dropping to mid 40s in combat and 60s in stations today whereas I was getting a pretty consistent 75fps everywhere before. 780 Ti BTW

For those dk2 owners who cant connect or are having issues with the latest build..have you downloaded Estranged Act 1 yet? Its a half life 2 mod from valve and has just been made dk2 compatible.

Details here..

Atmospheric and tense, with plenty of new ideas tweaked to suit VR...
For a start when you begin you are on a boat in rough swell, which is an odd moment as you feel slightly seasick, a VR effected seasickness, mad! :)

Ive just started it anyway and its sorting me out. Really moody soundtrack also!
