ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

A little trick I've discovered to make the cockpit text easier to read is to lean right back and then press the reset OR position button.
It makes the neutral seating position closer to the displays, so the text can be read without leaning forward.
My virtual body is then a bit behind me tho, but not so much that it bothers me.

For those that have not given it a try, setting adaptive vsync in the ed entry of the nVidia control panel really smoothed out any judders I was getting.

Give it a try

Since installing 0.4.2 and Fw 2.12 I can no longer get positional tracking in ED
Foolish of me

You get it the same way of before use Unofficial VR Game Manager

This version also updateds when the developer takes a new SDK

Add the ED. EXE in it and CHECK only[Disable OVRService], press SAVE LAUNCH SETTING and the the rest of the time just pres LAUNCH GAME

The game will work

PS: Just check that in the Configuration tool the setting is still in extended mode

Just venting some pre-getting-the-oculus steam here :) It's set to arrive tomorrow. It's the first time (in a long while) that I wished the weekend to be over -on a friday- already :)

I ordered my DK2 on Jun 16, 2014 and received it (in the UK) last friday (Sept 5th)

Never tried any VR before and the moment I sat down in the table demo scene a smile wrapped round my head and I started giggling like a little girl ...and then I tried ED and I nearly started cheering when I looked around my cockpit. It doesn't look good in the distance but the foreground is amazing. I think the panel resolution will need to double to really start the VR revolution going but it's a brilliant bit of tech.

I tried Cyberspace (roller coaster) and that is a real stomach churner. Was closing my eyes like a wuss :D

Also tried HL2 a few times but the movement speed makes me feel ill pretty much instantly.

Anyway, back to ED, been playing it for a good few hours and it's a great experience. Only downside is the lower FPS in and around the starports and ringed planets. No matter what settings I try I can't quite keep to 75 fps (r9 280x, i5 3570, 16gb - also tried my 7950 + 280x in crossfire but same deal) and so experience the disorientating judder.
Also the the chromatic aberration on the stars makes them look like horrible big triangles. I applied the fix but it's still very noticeable

Anyway, not complaining, it's a real buzz to play. Think I may have played it a little too long as my vision is a little floaty lol

Doesn't the latest SDK 4.2 fix the CA?

ED Doesn't use the 4.x SDK, it still just use its own version of an old 3.x SDK.

So we are all waiting in hope that next beta version of ED will be updated to newer SDK.

Just a suggestion. I had the same problem when I first got mine until I configured the Rift properly for my eyes. The IPD setting is easy to miss when you're gung ho for testing it out.

I'm not saying the game doesn't work. I'm saying the positional head tracking doesn't work. Head rotation tracking works fine. Just not the positional tracking. I've already tried Bilago's tool before you mentioned it. When you run ED using Bilago's tool, the game will tell you that you're not logged in. The game has to be launched from within the ED launcher.

Regardless, I've disabled OVRServer (it's not called service any longer), and the OVR config util. It's still not working despite that.

I'm having trouble using the galaxy map in the DK2 -- In fact, I can't use it at all other than looking at the pretty stars. The mouse pointer seems to be trapped inside a box just to the right of the menu, and I can't do anything even with the arrow keys. Is there another way to navigate the map with the Oculus. I'm trying to find trade routes and so far have to do it with trial and error.

Thanks for any response !

I've been using that for a while, back as well as up a bit. I also noticed making your height shorter by a few inches in the Rift profile means you don't have to streatch your neck so much when setting.

What I'd really like to see configuable in ED for the Rift is the ability to move some of the virtual panels around. Especialy those that are at an angle to more square on. Not only did I find myself leaning forward to read but also leaning sideways to see the location panel.

Excellent idea. No matter how I adjust the Rift, it always seems that too much of the panel text is blurry. Would be great to be able to reposition them.

Help in benchmarking my ED and Rift.

Okay, so now I’ve worked out how to see the in game FPS by removing the left lens I can see I’m doing about 55fps with everything set to low in waste disposal.

I was pretty disappointed with this as I’ve just upgraded from a GTX560 to a GTX780 and was hoping to get a lot more bang for my buck than that. Subjectively it doesn’t really seem that much better than it was before the upgrade but as I’ve only just worked out how to measure fps that’s just a guess.

I won’t list them individually as there’s been quite a few but I’ve applied most of the tweaks discussed in this thread to get as much out of the rig as I can. All except turning off the main monitor altogether as it didn’t seem to improve things that much from just lowering the res and setting it at 75Hz. I still don’t seem to be able to reach that illusive 75fps.

At this point I’m thinking of reinstalling a clean OS with just ED on it to see if that makes a difference.

Can somebody else with a 780 help benchmark me?

You have to put the .exe for the launcher and after press play on the launcher.
I have full tracking.

I would not hit panic mode just yet.

the rift support for ED is pretty preliminary, its using v old drivers.

I am hoping for a significant boost when they fully support 4.2 (+) drivers in the future.

Also, I believe FD themselves have said there is headroom for performance tweaks accross the board in the game itsself.
By the sounds of it, you are getting similar performance to me, and I am using a GTX670. So long as your cpu is not a POS, then imo the bottleneck is unlikely to be with your hardware.

(PS your 780 is a massive jump from your 560 - I had a GTX560Ti.. a good card back in early 2011 but my GTX670OC close to doubled my FPS in many games, and your 780 is probably 70% faster than my GTX670 :)

I got it working.. you don't need Bilago's tool. Just press "Pause service" under Oculus config Advanced.

The culprit was a webcam service. Unplugged webcam, works now. :)

I'm using a GTX 660Ti with a four-year-old i7 chip and, while I haven't checked my fps, the image is pretty smooth once I turn off vsyinc in the NVidia panel, disable Aero on Win 7, disable AA, and set the .exe priority to high. The rest of my graphic settings are on High. Not perfect, mind you, but almost no juddering and I can look across the cockpit quickly while in station with minimal lag. I find it very playable.

In fact, I can't understand why anyone would want to play ED on a flat monitor at all. Even at this stage, with my fairly dated set-up, ED in VR is frankly astonishing.

I agree (I have not bothered with ED on anything other than my rift since the morning it turned up over a month ago!).

I must admit I have not tried turning off vsync. I read somewhere on oculus site one of the "rules" of VR is always use vsync.

but if it works it works, so next time I am in ED I will check it out. thanks :)

The only difference I've noted with vsyinc off is better framerates. Tearing doesn't happen any more that with vsyinc on. Good luck, hope it helps your experience !
