ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

For those dk2 owners who cant connect or are having issues with the latest build..have you downloaded Estranged Act 1 yet? Its a half life 2 mod from valve and has just been made dk2 compatible.

Downloaded it a while ago but didn't try it yet - partly because I don't have issues with ED/lack of tiem and partly because I felt quite a bit of discomfort when running HL2 VR.

I can play ED or DCS A 10c for ten hours + wearing the rift and don't feel the slightest bit of discomfort, walking around in uncharted territory is no problem at all - I'm even fine with a couple of hours in VorpX Skyrim, but HL 2 makes me feel sick after 30 minutes. It's mainly the movement speed, everything being out of proportion and the loading screens tilt my brain.

Perfect Showcase of what not to do in VR imho.

Was Estranged designed with the rift in mind or is it just a regular HL mod that's rift enabled, maintaining all its discomforting properties?

[Edit:] Oh and on a side note, Senza Peso has been updated for the DK2 - a must see for every DK2 owner imho.

Hmm, hard to say as I didnt have any issues with Half life 2 myself. I use keyboard and mouse and have mouse sensitivity just above zero.
I think they have adjusted the walking speed by adding inertia,so its smoother. Everything feels correctly in scale and proportion to me.

There is a few new things in there different from HL2 that work really well in VR, but I obviously wouldnt want to let slip some spoilers. Graphically its slicker in places than HL2 and I like what they've done with the gunshot effects. Its a pity you feel sick from it though man as it really is a fantastic VR experience, could be worth another go?

Got My DK2 Yesterday. never had or tried the first one!

So amazing! and better immersion than I expected.
A few demos make me feel sick.. The Lava Roller coaster being the worst.
Got ED working today finally, not the slightest bit sick! could play it for ever on the rift.

Few Problems.
Frame rate is totally smooth if on Medium settings and no AA
which is not a problem as on the rift you cant see much of a difference.

All demos apart from "Totoro bus stop scene" have slight chromatic aberration around the edges. in said demo their is ZERO. all others have slight.
This makes most stars in ED blurry.

There is Graphics garbling all over stations and on parts of the HUD.
like Black webbing.
anyone get that??
only happens through the rift.

Google

To make the AppData folder visible on Windows Vista or Windows 7, do the following:

◾Launch the Windows Explorer.
◾Click on 'Organize' → 'Folder and Search Options' → 'View'.
◾Check 'Show hidden files and folders'.

Tonight is the first night I've been in since 1.04 has been released.

There is now a pretty regular frame freeze, where things hang for a second or two - not even when I move my head that much - and it's really causing me nausea.

I haven't installed the 0.4.2 driver for the DK2, in fact nothing has changed except the 1.04 patch

I realized what boosted my system fps.
because i wanted to try a VR game I had to disable vertical sync from the Nvidia control panel.
Try to go back but made thing worse, so now i'm running without and having 20/30fps more in game.:p

Vsync works for me only in "Adaptive" mode. It does make it a little bit smoother, but it introduces a bit of lag. Some people might get sea sick easier from that.

I also read somewhere in the forum (might actually be the OculusVR forum) that Galaxy Map is unreadable with current resolution. Yes and no. Its simply the position of the info panel in Galaxy map. Its too far away, making its font, too small for current resolution. However that is the beauty of VR, just move yourself closer to that panel, as if you would in real life, to read a smaller text. Everything becomes legible just fine, you just have to stretch a bit to the left and forward. :D My Galaxy map is now useable again!!!

I'll give estranged a go then. It's really odd with HL2 though - might try the lowered mouse sensitivity. One thing that's also very irritating to me is the height you need to put into the config tool - if I define a height that matches with NPCs, some door handles are at eye height and if I use my actual height (1.87 m), other characters are tiny. But yeah - that's just another one of many problems I encountered in HL2.
