Ha ha. I think they're implementing some sort of pvp mode soon, but I dont know what form it will take.

True, but the initial comment suggested compromising what they wanted to do. ie: Explorers might just want to explore in a ship tightly outfitted to exploration requirements, and not compromise their goal/fun/time/effort arming up.I haven't found anyone saying you can't, or shouldn't be allowed to, explore. There's also nothing stopping you from exploring without being prepared to face marauders, be that with weapons of your own, or a method of escaping them.
Sure, but what about the piles of cmdrs who signed up as 'fleet security' and brought armed condas? Most of them go to PG so they are 100% guaranteed never to have to actually do their job so they can just o7 each other and feel like real powerful fleet protectors. Its rather... yeah.

And as for these explorers making the obvious mistake of daring to go into OPEN... Yes you're right. It was their mistake. It was their mistake to forget about a certain minority of individuals who garner grief from needlessly destroying them. It was their mistake to expect even just a modicum of good grace in the midst of such a community event. And it was their mistake to forget than even after 3-4yrs, FD still haven't put in any sort of sensible C&P mechanics in place for such behaviour.![]()

People going into deep space shouldn't rely in C&P in the first place. And yes, in Elite you have to make sure you have proper shields, be aware of what happens around, and know how to get your ship out of sticky situations. That is pretty much the game. People complaining they dont like that are like people complaining others try to take the ball in FIFA. "But I just like dribbling, why should I have defenders in my team, I paid money for this game, it should be what I want!"
Okay, good luck with that attitude. FD gave every ship a shield for free. If you want to remove it because it means you get a slightly higher jump range, you have to deal with the consequences. That is how games work.
I think that's shifting the issue slightly. I agree that it's always wise to have good shields. I don't really see a shield generator as a sacrifice of jump range, because it's an essential item. However NeilF actually referred to not "arming up". I've never seen the point of fitting weapons in the hardpoints of an exploration ship. There's nothing "out there" to fight, and in the unlikely event I meet a PvPer the weapons I could carry on an Asp wouldn't beat a combat ship; it'll always be better to run. I therefore explore with empty hardpoints. The only exception has been carrying a PD for visiting Guardian sites.
Must say, I wondered about that. It may be difficult to instance security with the attackers !
Or, it is as you imply![]()
I am not so sure that Explorers would actually back such a thing, to be honest. They talk about wanting Environmental hazards, but most of them would be putting in support tickets if they got *ganked* by an electrical storm 3 months (or even days, to be honest) into an Expedition.
A simple fix for DW2 and all explorers would be to prevent ship weapon fire > 5000 lyrs from Sol. It's not necessary for weapons to function in deep space.
SRVs still need to shoot rocks occasionally, and other 'biological' things on planets, but I doubt ships would have to.
Deep space gankers would be reduced to firing o7s and expletives![]()
Whatever happened to the fabled "Shadow Server" that was for naughty Commanders ?
Couldn't we just move the PVP crowd across to that ? (In stealth mode of course... with adequate amounts of sneakiness...)
Good. If I wanted 'most MMOs', I'd be playing them instead.
'Most MMOs' are cookie-cutter theme park rides. I don't want to go on a ride. I want to be the driver.
That would have meant a lot of players not playing - including me!The entire game should have been open only from the start.
Some might, but not most, just like when it comes to ganking in DW. How many have put in support tickets over that? Complain, yes, but at the playa, not the game (ganked in private PVE groups being a different matter)
I think most want exploration to be risky, but in a way you can prepare for. Not random or arbitrary. Jumping to a system and getting sucked into a black hole? No. Jumping into a system and fighting to escape a black hole, however, would be great. Trying to get too close to one for your selfie or some kind of deep data scan? You know the risks you're getting into.
As for other hazards, as long as caution allows you to prevail, then bring it on. I spent hours examining space molluscs, trying everything my ship had on them to get a reaction (only ever got a basic flight response to danger). Then I accidentally flew into one at full speed. Shields gone and hull down to 50%. And I had an engineered reinforced hull. Had I been flying a tissue paper Explorer I might not survived that. And fair play if that had been the case!
I'd be all in for cmdrs killed by other cmdrs not losing anything (so 0% insurance, data kept, npc minion staying alive, no respawning 1000's of Lys away etc) - as long as they finally fixed combat logging. So clog = automatic death, pretty explosion rendered where the ship disappeared, (zero cost) rebuy screen for the other side, regardless of whether it was deliberate unplugging or network error.
