It's DISGUSTING is what it is!

I want to know why the Feds aren't out chasing the real criminals instead of harassing small business owners like myself! If I happen to find some gold just floating in space, I see it as my civic duty to salvage it as a hazard to navigation! I mean I can't go round asking everyone if it fell off the back of their hauler, can I!?

Um pretty much yes... and now you mention it, it must be mine. I lost some gold right at that very place.

if you find a wallet in the street stuffed with cash and credit cards and don't hand it in to the police you can be charged with theft (stealing by finding), its the same with found cargo.

i agree its a little harsh right now as there is no way to hand in the cargo, hopefully something will be implemented in a later build to take care of this.

Because Elite Dangerous is a simulation. And that's what real life security/police forces do too in most countries!

It's mine, you can hand it back tonight :)

Your mistake is not that you picked up said gold, but that you got caught...
Learn the ways of the 'cold' ship using the stock sidewinder and no cargo, then go for an operational stealth dock... :D

Really? I'm fairly sure the law of salvage comes into play, aka some sort of reward! (cargo, not wallets)

I picked up a wallet once. While transporting it to the nearest police station for safe keeping, a copper fleeced me down randomly in the street, discovered the wallet with someone else's name on it, then shot me for stealing it.

I got what I deserved.

A fair cop!

try telling that to all the people who were arrested for taking things from the containers that washed up in Devon a few years back.

that's a cargo example for you ;)

News article: Ship Scavengers Face Arrest

to save people reading the whole thing:

Under Britain's shipping laws, salvage remains the property of the original owner. Anyone who finds washed up goods must contact a government official, called the Receiver of the Wreck, within 28 days.

It doesn't now it's vapourised - see post 11 ;)

Ah Spookytooth. I remember welcoming you to the forums just a few months back - feels almost like yesterday. Now look at you - master of all you survey, and so very very rich that you use gold canisters for target practice - impressive!

What ship are you flying these days? Personally I'm enjoying my solid gold Lakon Type 9 - though it does get a little "melty" when I drop out of hyperspace near a large sun.

But in seriousness - how are you getting on in game? Is it everything you'd hoped?

Well...... after keeping my nose to the grindstone and dodging traffic wardens, I worked my way through the usual delivery vans, and I'm now cruising around in an Anaconda, although to be truthful I'm missing my Type 9. I know what you mean with the heat issues on the 9 - I had 3 heat sinks fitted, although that was just a little over the top in retrospect.

Trouble is with the 9, if my cargo hold wasn't full I felt I was somehow not doing things right, so I was missing out on the exploration side of things.

Last night in my Anaconda I had the satisfaction of seeing solar flares for the first time. Awesome!!

Love this game - warts and all. The future is indeed bright methinks

Glad to see you are keeping busy too - and a member of the Lakon Type 9 Appreciation Society (like myself )

Cheers Commander! ;)

Can you identify it?

Exactly, that the whole point, and main reason why it is illegal :)

The game only sees that the gold is not yours, and labels it illegal. I can imagine this will be changed later on, but this is how it works now.
