News Forum revamp coming soon!

Instead of a forum revamp, why not concentrate on a game revamp? Much needed imho

The forum revamp is a process that has been in the works for quite some time.

- vBulletin 4 is End of Life. This would also denote that VB4 could have security issues that may never get fixed.
- vBulletin is a resource hog compared against XenForo. From testing, we've seen XenForo simply outperform vBulletin in all load-tests (and have lesser overhead!).
- XenForo 2 is a logical choice to make for us, as we can transfer everything over to the new software with minute issue.

Thanks! :)

Yeah, but ESO has really strict moderation, and no off-topic sections. That seems to be the case with a large number of game developer forums but not FD for some reason.

In a ways of speaking, you could say our forums "forums" are from an era where game companies had Off-topic sections. Over the years, many other company forums have phased out off-topic sections so that their forums only could talk about "X subject in Y section, and that is it".

We've never really had much issue with our off-topic section of the forums. However, if significant issues were to happen within the OT forums, we'll pull the plug on said section(s). But we've not had an issue since 2006! :)

The good news is that our Creative Services team has been hard at work with some really nice game-based forum themes. I wouldn't fret about it. :)

Also 'Salt Mine' has been vetoed. ;)

Hi
So does this mean an end to the DDF archives and they will be lost for ever? Whilst I know people (ie like myself) use them to point out critical features where I feel the game has derailed from the one I backed, it IS a treasure trove of info and I think it would be a damn shame for you to delete all of that stuff.

I would request all this stuff be added as its own tab in the new forum

Will any of the guides i.e. from the Guides and Tutorials and the Exploration sections, be migrated across? Some people have spent a lot of time working on those and they can be very useful both for newcomers and veteran players.

And what if I have difficulties with certain colours, am colour blind or simply don't like the default theme? Honestly Brett, you are setting yourself up for a huge amount of criticism that isn't hard to see coming or avoid.

DDF, PBF, and ABF I will add a note to persist over to XenForo 2.

1) Will the bugs currently submitted on the forums be migrated to the new system or are we starting fresh?

2) While I like my forum name (I should, I just created it last month), if I choose to instead use my Frontier login, would my forum name now be an email address?

3) Does anything about my current forum account transfer over? (Reps, PMs, subscribed threads, etc)

4) When forums on being moved to another site or section, will the threads be moved there as well or will it start from a fresh state?

5) Challenge Accepted! :p ;)

I was referring more to the moderation philosophy of gaming forums. The Forza Motorsport forums are so strictly moderated that there's little in the way of open discussion, seems the vast majority of players seek out 3rd party sites. ESO is a bit strict, some think too strict but trolling, flaming, and baiting are kept pretty low. Bungie's forums were so permissive at one time that it felt like one of those reality TV shows. They have made some changes that have toned it down a bit but it's not really a good community there.

I would say that the ED forums are less strict than ESO's forums and not as permissive as Bungie's forums. I've heard more than a few people talk about how great the ED community is but they make an exception for the forums, usually avoiding it. That's down to personal opinion of course, each to their own, I wade in the waters here but I avoid the deep end as much as possible.

Much as I hate to be the guy who won't stop poking you with a stick, I have to ask for clarification: When you say DDF, PBF and ABF do you mean just the current (barely) active forums or are you including the DDA? Nice though it is to have a place to kick back with the original Kickstarters, it would seem that it's the already archived material that many of us are worried about losing.

In short, can you tell us what -- if anything -- is going to happen to all the stuff currently under https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/104-Elite-Dangerous-Archives, especially the Design Discussion Archive with all its lovely Proposals and discussions.

Sorry to bang on, but making assumptions about this sort of thing is what leads to tears when people don't get what was "promised"...

Thanks.

I still think the Astronomy and Hardware sub-fora should be retained and not buried in the dross that is "off-topic".

1) I am unsure currently on how it will be set up. I do apologize that i do not have much information about the new process currently.

2) You can login with your email or username on XenForo 2... And that doesn't matter if you are using the Frontier Auth or the local Forum Auth methods.
Here's a quick screenshot of what it'll look like (it's your run of the mill XF2 auth with the little Frontier Account login at the bottom).

3) All of your current forums account should transfer over. Your subscriptions however might not - I need to double check on this.

4) When I go to move/merge forums together, the accompanying threads will be also merge to the new forum. They'll also have a prefix delegated to where they came from.

5) You won't like my challenges. You only get one token, but you're not the one that can use the token - ask DustyArne about his dreadful fate of the token. ;)
