Anthem

Sigh...
You know what, this community really gets on my nerves, sometimes.

:)

This is pretty light criticism in much fairness compared to the rest of the internet forums I frequent.

This is perhaps the most gentlemanly balanced gaming forum I've ever come across.

Forum as a whole, yes. Kind of. This particular section? No.

I loved Diablo 2 and 3. Borderlands was the closest I've seen to come to a shooter version.

There's a market for this style of game I think, especially for me and I'm still waiting for the right one to hook me.

The Division came pretty close also, but I prefer fps over third person and the loot ended up becoming pretty dull.

I like that Anthem shakes up the movement and adds some verticality into the genre. But the loot isn't exciting to me and that's what it should all be about in the end.

It does kinda defeat the purpose when a lvl 1 common weapon out dps the cap level grandmaster gear due to group level scaling.

I remember when WoW added heirlooms and they did that and it was cool if you had alts and such to give them an edge, but to make everything like that seems to defeat the purpose of the loot aspect of the game, but makes it more accessible and convenient to play in general and I get it. Its just a turn off for me.

Too busy playing the game perhaps? Personally, Im playing with multiple setups on the ranger now Ive started running strongholds...a bit like how in mass effect ye could use specific setups fer different enemies. Wasnt really a factor before, one setup could basically do everything, but with strongholds, the fight is much more intense.

Ever see an old movie where the guy clones himself to make his life easier? Then the clone clones himself and what actually happens is that the personality gets split three ways. There a story arc where this exact thing happens though the circumstances are obviously different. I only mention it cos its quite funny but cant really expand on it...spoilers alert and all that jazz. I stood and listened to the three identical clones with very individually unique personalities clash and argue with each other after the mission ended...now one my favourite npc characters...or three of my favourite characters who all look exactly the same but sound very different.

Does me head in just trying to describe it. Its only in Fort Tarsis that ye have these encounters anyway considering that outside, 95% of the indiginous planet life wants ye dead.

Its not really the sorta game where funny stories spring immediately to mind...I played the likes of me3 fer a total of 9k hours but fer the life of me, I dont think I could recall any funny stories too tell about it, even though every single one of those hours were fun to play. On games like rdr2 its easy to come up with stories because its a very different type of game much in the same vein as GTA5.

But try and think up some good gameplay stories about a shooter in the same theme as anthem...borderlands, destiny etc...its all multiplayer fun which is fun, but not in the same way as playing alone. I could say that my m8 last night was using a new super vape thing...on the mic he sounded like Darth Vader every time he took a puff on it which was damned funny at the time in the squad, but its the sorta thing ye really need to be there for to appreciate the humour.

Or when I worked out how to kill an ancient ash titan which is one the strongest enemies in the game...and its not a bug simply a case of good timing. These things are only vulnerable fer about one solitary second when it punches the ground and the armour on its forearms lifts up to reveal that gorgeous glowing weakspot...thats after 60 seconds of jumping and hiding and trying to keep the team alive while it launches attack after attack. If ye time it just right and activate a super, ye can take upto two thirds of its total HP in one well timed shot...miss and its back to running, jumping, dying and running outta ammo fer ten minutes.

Cant remember the name of the mission but theres one which is a huge cave where ye take on 4 of these things all at once...entire squad died twice trying to get through that one which means that if yer alone, then yer chances of just surviving are somewhere between slim and laugh out loud. And thats the whole point, its a very social game that actually rewards ye fer having lots of m8s who play...the more they play, the greater yer rewards are every week when it resets, same fer them the more you play. Its a clever way of encouraging even the most anti social players to work together in a game where any form of pvp is impossible anyway...and loners wont progress anywhere near as quickly as they would like.

Game has a few issues granted...been bounced out into console a few times, couple times the launch bay glitches and ye cant launch missions from it. The former is sorted by simply restarting the game and rejoining the last session and the latter issue is fixed by reloading the launch bay by entering Fort Tarsis which takes all of a minute fer both loading screens. None of those issues make the game unplayable, just annoying sometimes but hardly gamebreaking. Not saying others arent having more serious issues but from what I can see, they are more the exception rather than the rule.

Besides...if yer salty about bugs that break the game, then as an elite player yer throwing stones in a glass house far as Im concerned. Last time I played elite, it spat me out 3 times an hour on average with buzz crashes and performance wise, it didnt exactlyy impress me. Far as Im concerned as regards bugs and stability, anthem is running better than elite was last time I played...its running better than rdr2 was in the beginning before its last big patch. This is why when people complain of gamebreaking bugs in anthem, Im sitting here wondering if there are two different versions of anthem and we playing different games...cos fer me and just about all my m8s playing, then it may as well be a different game...cos none of these issues appear to be affecting us.

And yet elsewhere, the sky is falling the sky is falling! Real storm in a teacup stuff...Ill wager that much of the noise is coming from players who simply dont like EA and search fer any bandwagon to jump on in their crusade to attack anything they make. I see the complaints, laugh a little and then move on and play my own game and think nothing more of them. Game critics dont like players like me cos they like online trolls who only survive cos others react to them...golden rule is simply to not engage with them at all cos thats exactly what they want...attention ^

Hahah, yeah, Matthias "Oh, it's not enhance, it's multiply" is funny. And his missions are really interesting from the lore perspective.

Though I like the Brin's missions more, probably, because of her goofiness.
Oh and speaking of goofy - Sorna over at the crafting mats store is probably my favourite character overall. I come back to her to listen about her "adventures" with various pets she's trying to raise and it's hilarious to listen to. "I was walking Wiggles and we were training off the leash and everything went great until this kid shows up with a sandwich. Anyway like my uncle says, one doesn't really need ALL ten fingers and my family gave them an awesome care basket." :D
Her determination to tame at least ONE animal in all the Bastion is just as cute as she is.

Ya try and get some good stories out of People and end up being age patronised...

Young uns these days...

I'm not young. I was merely reacting to you calling me a "fella" :p
Anyway, yes, like Vermin said, it's hard to separate an engaging and representative "Story" from Anthem's narrative. It's a thousand and one "nice things", rather than one distilled experience. He is also right about one other thing - like with Elite, the people who enjoy it simply play it, people who don't, complain on forums.

What irks me about this particular game is the apparent bandwagon it has ammased. And I don't understand it in this thread, here, in particular. I mean, if you're playing it and like it, fine, you don't need to talk about it, except maybe sharing builds or creating fan clubs for characters. If you play it and have problems about it, you should go to the official forum and make suggestions there, not infest places like this.

I guess it's the same problem as with resident Dangerous discussion vs. Suggestions & Feedback forum. There are hundreds of threads about petty things in the DD, and painful lack of actual feedback.
Just the way internet works, I guess. *shruggs*

Anthem imo has great foundation. Ive reached gear score 480 on my colossus and my ranger. The combat feels unique and the world is just beautiful.

But right now it is lacking content after you reach a certain point. Im pretty confident, that Bioware can add all the much needed meat in the coming months and Im looking forward to it.

Fingers crossed EA doesnt mess this up.

Surely you have criticised a game in a thread at some point? Infest is a very strong word to describe what people say especially so if they have played the game I'd suggest.

Anyways the best way of "combating" this is to talk about the stuff you enjoy. Speaking for myself I'll get this at some point later in the year mainly to give the devs time to fix and add content but also I just have too much in the backlog to complete at the moment.

I am on Chris side on this one: I just cannot understand how everyone feels the urge to declare the non interest in a particular game thread. I personaly dont venture into threads about games I dont like, its just wasted time imo. I prefer a objective discussion about the topic at hand and dont like to have to filter out the valuable information between spam posts. I ve seen this on tons of other game threads aswell.

Still this is one of the more mature discussion places on games in general at frontier forums. Please lets all work on keeping this place that way, we dont need youtube comment like spam.

I can only speak for myself on this. I was looking forward to this game since ME Andromeda was releases and we started to hear the first news about anthem. I played the demos and liked some bits, disliked others. I'm also still interested in it as it matures. That's enough qualification surely to be in the thread and criticise it as stands. Most others here with criticism seem to be in same boat.

Certainly, but there are different kinds of criticism.
Some are justified some are not.
The game has bugs, that's certainly true and a fair point. But with the same breath one has to add that BW have been awesome addressing the bugs. There are patches rolling out one after another.
You could asso criticise the relative lack of content after the main story ends, mainly low variety of gear and weapons and free play activities. That is a thing that will have to be judged again, six, eight months after release. There is definitely better variety of stuff than for example Destiny or Warframe had at launch (but nowhere near the Borderlands - nothing can top the procedurally generated weapons. :D), but it still gets samey after a while, especially in this kind of game, where play time measures in dozens and hundreds of hours.

Here I don't have a problem, personally. I've never been the "endgame" type of player. I rather create another character and play through the game from the start, than grind forth after better and better loot for its own sake.

But most criticism I've seen is the "This is not Bioware, screw you EA, I don't like it and will nitpick every detail to bash it" kind. It's highly discouraging when comes to any kind of meaningful discussion.
Well, anyway.

I think that if you wait a couple months and try it again (it's already 10x better than it was in the demo) you WILL like it, eventually. The core is there. The gameplay feels awesome, characters are interesting, story is decent as well. Well, I mean as far as Bioware stories go, of course. It's no Dostoevsky. :D

Just to be clear: you are not the type of poster I am talking about :) I like your posts and respectful tone.
