ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Had more of a play with Elite & DK2 today.

The smearing that I complained of in my last post is probably actually due to my low frame rate. I can turn my head on the (high contrast) spinning cobra loading screen with very little smear.

However. When in game and turning my head there was significant judder and things like hud elements doubled up in my vision. It did start to make me a little queezy after 30 mins or so.

So I decided to switch the display to "primary" in the options, basically maintaining rift functionality and head tracking but allowing me to monitor my FPS (ctrl+f) in the top right of my monitor.

Looking at Azeban station from the outside I was only managing 45fps (low settings) :(
My rig is getting a little long in the tooth (GTX580 sli) but that still seems rather too low. Anyone else tried a similar card with Elite & DK2?

I also read that disabling SLI might actually help. So disabled it and tried again. Exactly the same FPS.

Time for an upgrade... A single powerful GPU seems like the way to go. I just got to see if I have the willpower to hold out for the 8XX series... I really want to experience Elite with the high FPS I've enjoyed in less demanding demos asap!

i hope in the future oculus manages to make sli and crossfire compatible with the rift because so many of us have 2 gpus.. its a pity if we have to upgrade to a single gpu just for the rift

This is a known issue with E:D and SLI and crossfire in Beta 1. I think in the newsletter or somewhere here in the forum I was reading that Beta 2 will add sli and corssfire support. Just check the release notes of Beta 2 before enabling.

I'm afraid SLI / Crossfire cannot be workaround, using 2 GPUS add some extra processing time and lag, you process more frames per second, but there is a little extra lag to synchronize 2 gpus.

This lag causes seasickness or motionsickness ... you have to reduce it at maximum!
Any VR user should avoid SLI / Crossfire configurations unless is very resistant to this effects.

Yep, Beta 2 will have SLI support (not sure about Crossfire, it isn't mentioned in the newsletter). However, I think the jury is still out on whether SLI/Crossfire introduce latency and therefore how suitable they are for the Rift. I guess if you have a huge glut of power, then a bit of latency won't make much difference as you'll have rendered the scene early. But if not...

It'll be interesting to see peoples findings with this. I tend to prefer a single big GPU just for the simplicity and lower heat/power (assuming it's all top end stuff).

I just seen on Amazon, resellers are trying to sell DK1's and 2's for $900 USD and up!

I wonder if they actually sell any at that price?

I have seen them go for £480/$750 on eBay in the UK. Some people have more money than patience so are happy to pay a premium for instant delivery.

Hmm got war thunder working fantasticly but ED seem to be getting a fisheye effect and head tracking`s not working almost as if there`s some conflict of intrests somewhere :S
Can someone tell me am i suposed to disable some oculus service of some sort or is that old news now?
I updated the sdk and firmware and i think i read that this has given problems to some but im not really a fan of rolling back to old drivers as im sure ED will update at some point.

DL OculusServiceManager and use "Stop Service" before playing ED.

Also, for ED, google "Elite Dangerous Chromatic abberation fix" and use that.

In general, use the DVI input for the rift if you can. It gives a better colour range. And, if feasible, don't use SLI/Crossfire with the rift as it introduces some lag and can cause extra vr sickness

DVI! oh crap!! that will be a bit of a hedache, thought the HDMI ports were better or i presumed anyway oh well we shall experiment, Thank you at least i now have something to work with

Got it working.Ok so it was that easy, well OMG Cool WOW its one of them experiences that words cannot convey, Cheers for the help again....well back in i guess :) ,oh yeah and the hdmi port seems to be working well ! so i`ll stick with it for now i unless i find probs down the road.

Hmm new problem that i could not help but laugh at, i had to peer round my seat to look at the menus hah anyhow i seem to be seated a good 2 foot backward from where i should be, looked through the controls and could not find any kind of recenter button (if there is one?) of course i can lean forward but that makes it kinda uncomfortable.

I think default recenter in Elite for the rift is F12

Haha Thankyou :)

on the HDMI thing i do notice slight seperations in the colour gradient but i think i can live with it.

Probably an old question but is there anyway to see fps in the rift so i can start playing around with my gfx settings?

Crossfire is in there too. I'm running a dual AMD 7870 configuration, but my Rift is still pending, so I'll post up my experiences once it arrives & beta 2 drops.

Ah, great news for ATI guys and gals. I did think it odd that the newsletter only mentioned SLI.

Only this https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1474 from Cyberreality over on the oculus forum

Ah, reading that thread, I understand the issue now. And it's probably solvable from CCC (ATI) or nVidia Control Panel. It should be a case of settling a "full range RGB" setting (or something similar). The option is there for PlayStation consoles (PS3 & PS4) so I don't see why it wouldn't be there for graphics cards costing as much as consoles!
