ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

After testing some more, I'm now positive that the reasons for the head tracking stuttering are the extended screen integration and the fact that ED doesn't use the actual Oculus services, right now... still, it's mighty impressive.

I totally eliminated the stutter. I had 3 friends of mine to test it and they all agree. Its totally fluid now.

I just disabled aero, droped my graphics to low and disabled crossfire as it added horible latency

Let me rephrase that: Once the game has proper DK2 integration, you shouldn't have to drop the graphics setting to make it run smooth... well, not if it did run on multiple monitors on high before, as it did for me.

It's funny how you get so much things and you think about payday, knowing that you have to pay in anycase with a credit card that will pull down your money next month:S:S:S

I hope there will be the world full of people like you so i can get a reduced money 780ti, enough to move the DK2:D:D

There is a reason why I'm going with the 880 series instead of the 780 series

Its speculation, however, a year or so ago there was a conference in which both Lucky and the guy from Nvidia stated that there was a partnership with both companies for a better streamline and optimize VR processes through the video card. It is my belief that the 880's will have the first iteration of the development into this.

Plus, I do alot of GPU intensive activities (rendering, UE4, etc..), and my GPU is quite outdated (currently running a gtx 560 Ti).

In regards to money management, it's called a "budget" ;)

Just dropping this here. A nice technical read-through on some of the tech driving LCD's, video cards, and, of course the Rift (and its 'magic' 75Hz requirement).

http://doc-ok.org/?p=1057

Also a good pointer as to why you don't get over 60Hz in windows with a primary monitor running 60Hz, and good news for possible Linux implementations of a Rift-driver :)

Just interested - why are you going for a laptop card? Even the upcoming desktop version (980) doesn't look promising enough to make it worth upgrading from dual 680 GTXs in my case.

Don't get me wrong - money is a non-issue, but the 880 and even 980 don't look promising.

The claim that it is going to be the 980 (instead of an 880) is a myth (currently). There is a reason why Nvidia includes the label "M" after their products.. 880M is the mobile gpu, 880 is the desktop. The 880 would have come out at roughly the same time as the 880M, however, it was pushed back. There hasn't been an official reason as to why. It is my belief that they pushed it back to accommodate the VR optimizations.

In your case, I would probably hold off on upgrading. In my case, I need to upgrade. My current card is a 560, so it's about that time. Plus the bearings on the fan is starting to go out >.<

I'm pretty sure you guys are all on OculusVR forum, but just in case, there is a post about installing a protective matte film on the screen of Oculus to alleviate most of the SDE.

You can find it here:

I just finished this mod, and my first impressions are pretty positive. The protective screen definitely reduced SDE a lot, to a point where its not noticeable. Text is a little bit easier to read because of that. However it soften the picture to a point where some will consider it being blurry. To me its fine, but it is definitely a personal preference.

I would recommend people to try this mod, however you'll have to open your DK2 and be careful not to damage internals as you install the screen (pretty easy to be honest). This however will void your DK2 warranty, so that is another thing to consider if you are thinking about doing this.

I did it, and I'm happy with it. If anything it should be pretty easy to remove it.

Funnily enough, I read the post and ordered them. Sitting on my desk atm and haven't fitted it yet but will get round to it.

SDE doesn't bother me too much, losing any detail does bother me as the low resolution already makes things crappy looking at distance. Still love it but it is crappy. Roll on 1440p/4K consumer version.

I see - didn't check if it was only a rumour as I didn't want to upgrade at this point.

Yeah - and upgrading from a 560 of course makes sense.

I think you are mistaken.
mobile and desktop GPUs have been out of sync for a while now, and tieing them up together with the same naming does make sense

TBH its not how I would have done it. This generation I would have kept the desktop GTX880 and then launched the mobile GTX88MAX (to separate it from the current 880)

but that is just a little thing really. overall, having mobile and desktops using the same name keeps things simpler imo.

posting here as I suspect there will be a few interested.

IF it is £450 for the top of the line card I MAY bite, but for that price it is going to have to be better than the 780Ti imo.

if the 2nd tier card matches a 780 in performance I may end up going for that.

PS
saviornt.. someone better tell Zotac as otherwise their box design is a royal cockup ;) :p

o yeah :) cannot wait to get home and start ED...
