Live Forum Q&A - Audio!

I love the sound change when you pause. It's just yet another detail that goes above and beyond expectations really.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the amazing answers and a look into the world of audio of Planet Coaster! Your hard work is greatly appreciated! I personally love all of the detailed sounds you can hear in the game, as well as the fantastic music, and it's great to know how they were created for the game, and what you guys are working on behind the scenes!

Have a great evening! [heart]

I'd have to say that is my own indulgence one part and feedback another. I like how that sound adds to the mix and cuts through nicely by emphasizing turns. I know it's not 100% realistic but it is a great piece of feedback on how you created your turns. In the current Alpha 2 version it triggers slightly later so it communicates that with more gradient. It's great you are all so passionate for the realism, but in this case I think the communication of what you build wins out form me. Having said that, I will take it down a little bit in the mix : )

Awesome. It is definitely a useful sound, though. It's one place the sounds have completely driven my design. I'm constantly trying to make my coaster turns as smooth as possible to minimize the sound. In that way, the sound is great as "living UI" feedback. I'm able to tell even before any graphs or color overlays have been implemented in coaster construction that the lateral forces in that section are above some threshold.

Thanks again!

Damn I missed the chance to ask a question I can ask! I wanted to ask what is the Planco for "I love Planet Coaster"? :)

Don't get me wrong, I very much like the pause aesthetic. It does have a dreamlike quality to it, and I guess 'unsettling' isn't really the right word for it (as it has negative connotations and that's not what I was going for). Let's just say that when I first experienced it, I found it very striking and that was a good thing.

I feel the same way about that ambient sound - and it is a good thing. No changes needed.

I came in half way through the session, as I was out in the garden, watering the plants, after a lovely warm day. But I have just spent the last hour reading through all the Q&A's that have been posted.

I am so pleased with all the answers that Matt & Jon, were able to give and like the rest of the guys at Frontier, they are so passionate and dedicated to the making of this brilliant game. Planet Coaster is going to be one of the best games ever made for this genre and it is all thanks to Frontier for bringing this game to levels, we were never expecting.

Everything so far has been so lovingly created and I just want to thank everyone at Frontier, for all the hard work that the team is putting into this game. These guys, really do believe in what they are creating and it really shows when you load up the game. The attention to detail has been captured in every aspect of the game and we still have a lot more to look forward to yet. It doesn't get any better than this! I can't praise them enough! Thank you all at Frontier! [up] [up] [up] [yesnod]

Hi guys!

Thank you so much for answering my question! Looking forward to hearing all your additions to planet coaster. Was a lovely read of all the answers!

Hey Croongetuige, alles goed?

We really loved working with them on the trailer and it was a blast seeing the images and music come together. No further plans though, we wanted a fun band to help transition and introduce you to our world. I think that worked wonderfully well but that is also the extend of that particular story : )

Prima hier! [cool] Ik zag dat je zelfs een heus artiestenprofiel hebt op 3fm.nl! *har*[pirate] Good busy! [wink]

A lovely choice, nice band! Although I only knew them from 'Need You Now' before Planet Coaster used 'Compass'...check out their youtube-channel for all the references to the PC trailer! [hehe]

Thanks for all the answers, guys!
Thank you and all the others for delivering things that sound like music to my ears! [big grin]

Thanks for adressing the custom music thing, its nice to see explained why it's so difficult.

Yet i still hope you find a way to solve the problem. As stated multiple times, you guys do an amazing job of creating music and sounds. But the creativity of the game allows us to have 1001 rides and atmospheres. As good as you people are, you can never supply a theme for evrything we can think of, so we really need the custom music i think.

Hopefully you will find a way to make it happen. Or at least give us the option to do it ourselfs even tough you stated it was "the hard way".
to me custom music and sfx is THE BIGGEST need and want in the audio category for games like these. Without customization sameness takes over and every park sounds just like every other park, and to me thats a slow game killer. I personally think they have their priorities all mixed up. Noone is going to know if all metal coasters sound alike, they basically do anyway, what people will notice is the custom music a creator puts in that coaster area.

At worst give us some sort of way to import, its better than nothing.

Did I miss today's livestreem or am I mistaken on the date? It should be on youtube right?

I thought it said: "Developer spotlight: Forum live Q&A - Thursday 12th May 6pm - 8pm BST
Our second week we will have the audio team join us to answer your questions about how it works, the future of game audio and how they bring the game to life through sound. "

i feel the same way, i am a bit disapointed by their explanation, so perhaps no custom music, and perahps no custom scenery ! so nothing custom at all ! humm i don't think i would play this one for ten years like rct 3 !

This. It's not just a fun feature that should be implemented. It's a need when you build more advance stuff. Tbh i was seriously unimpressed by that anwser. It's like when rct3 had no mods at first and it only happen because of leaked file and that's what made the game better.

For some reson, the dev seam sure they can do a better job then us and restrict users to not do anything. But let's be real. They can't.

Hey Helena,
Sorry you didn't get the chance to ask your question.

I dont think we could leave such a lovely question unanswered so Matt Florianz sent me some details to post up. I should also give a huge credit to James Stant that created the language. Unfortunately he is ill at the moment or he would have been on the Q&A yesterday but I'm sure he'd love to chat more about Planco when he's back. :) Planco is real language created by the team and I'm sure James would be delighted give some more details on these at some point.

So, to answer your question...

I love You is "E dor oe!" [pronounce ee dor oh!]

And Lovely is Dorzi [Dor-zee]

He even gave us this little table to show you a number of similar words...

Loveabledorbalidor-bal-ee
Lovedordor
Loveddorendor-en
Lovelydorzidor-zee
Lovesdorsdors
Lovingdorlerdor-la

Hope that answers your question!

Zac

100% agree on this!!

Like i have said numerous of times, i do NOT want to bash the sound team because everything they did, is awesome! But i think custom music should be a top priority.
We can be endless creative with this game, and that was their whole point to stimulate our creativity. So in the end we can come up with 1001 creations but we only have a limited number of themes to accompany them.

Just a few examples :
There are -always- people who will have some kind of Jurassic Park ride, which will only work with fitting music.
We already saw some "alpine" style, which would really need those "old school german mountain" music [tongue]
And i can think of many many more example's.

When we come to darkrides, every "scene" will need fitting music. I have never been in a darkride without music and it would ruin the whole ride.
Just imagine rideing "It's a small world" without the (fitting)music, it's just awkward.
The music in-game is awesome, but the themes they supply can never ever cover the endless creations we come up with.

And i didn't even talk about real life recreations, which quite a lot of people do. It will be impossibe if you can't add the music.

At least im glad Frontier is acknoledging we REALLY want this feature, but i really hope they will move this up the priority list.

Not as simple as that. They have limited resource and a bunch of stuff that *has* to go into the game. Whenever a new feature is introduced (e.g. terrain, water, rollercoasters, flatrides, management, etc.) they come with requirements on multiple disciplines: engine, UI, animation, audio. All those things have to be complete before the feature can be released. So moving something that isn't seen as "core" like custom music up the priority list means moving an existing feature down it. Frontier won't release a feature without its finished audio, so planned features would necessarily be delayed.

Well I am erring on custom music for the time being. Maybe its because I am much older than most of you guys on here, but don't get me wrong, I love music, but I am not into all this head banging stuff. My tastes are more for easy listening and sixties era, which I grew up with. I can see why most of you want custom music to be a priority, but it's not a definite must have as far as I am concerned.

I realize that, and you are right. Ofcourse all "core" features need to have proper sounds and music.

But the way i look at it, we have terrain tools, coaster builder, etc etc. I think Custom music is somewhat of a feature instead of a "music product". (Because no actual music has to be recorded or composed) So i even wonder if the sound team will be responsible for this at all, since it's mostly programming instead of "creating" sounds and music.

When you think of it as a feature i would put it pretty high on the priority list.
But ofcourse, no discussion about the fact that core feature's should always have priority. But custom music would be close.

Hehe, neither am i into headbanging [big grin]

But even a lot of more "gentle" rides would need music. Like i said before, just look at "It's a small world". It would have never been so succesfull if it didn't have the music.
And for my fellow Dutch people i think we can all agree that darkrides like "Fata Morgana" and "Droomvlucht" would have never ever been so succesfull without their perfect fitting music.
