In game travel - the critical flaw?

Ah ok, I have 24ly unloaded... Because I forgot to re-add my C5 Guardian booster when starting this jaunt it seems :D

Which could lead to a derail on outfitting templates (totally need :/)...

But I'm gonna annoy people by saying it's kinda academic. 34ly range is still a slog (subjectively, to me), when criss-crossing the bubble to reach POI (that CG, that base where my mate is, that Tharg hotspot etc - juggling loadouts along the way to your 'get me to the fun' build, so you can change back to your 'actually have some fun' build. And back again...). It's the tedium wall in this game.

And it's resolvable, with no great inconvenience to those who enjoy it ;)
I am beginning to think this game just isn't for you. Because you clearly don't seem to understand it.

I both agree and disagree with the original post here. Yes travel is arduous. Yes I wish there was a way to overcome it. However, the notion of a massive galaxy that is up to us to explore, and that is so infinitely large that we've just barely yet to scratch the surface is also part of the appeal of the game. As a compromise, I have a solution, which someone may or may not have already suggested, but I think it could work to make things a bit less boring for some, and change the dynamic of the game quite a bit.

We know that fleet carriers are coming, and we also know that it is possible for large vessels and stations to jump thousands, or even tens of thousands of light years in one jump. So I think it should be feasible, but also costly in both resources and time, to allow fleet carriers to jump up to 10,000 ly, which would allow travel across the galaxy in just 10 jumps. It could require mining of some specific types of resources to be feasible, which would make it necessary to plan the jumps out, and maybe have some teams going out ahead and scouting out resources. It could also be affected by weight of what is on the ship, with heavier weights obviously limiting jump range, and thus the more ships on board the longer it will take to get places. I think it would be exciting to be a part of a small squadron who is focused on exploration, who is jumping to major landmarks around the galaxy, and to places that have yet to be explored yet or are currently hard to reach by normal jump ranges. It could also make transport missions interesting and create a more interconnected economy between Colonia and the bubble. It could give more comraderie in a squadron, that you can park your ship on board, while the rest of your crew gathers minerals and executes a jump, and you can log back on and see how the expedition has progressed, and what sort of resources the crew has managed to gather while you were away. It would give a whole new dynamic to future distant world's expeditions, which for me got boring about 1/4 of the way there. There's only so many long haul jump sessions I can do before I just feel like heading back to the bubble. I'm sure the center of the Galaxy is lovely, but I don't think I have the attention span to make it there using the current travel system.

So yea, I agree that it is a flaw in the current design of the game, but I think it is not something that can't be overcome with some new features that may more may not be coming in the near future. Definitely worth talking about and strategizing on for sure, and I hope they are working on this stuff for the future, because it does have some seriously amazing potential to transform the game for the better.

The pitch I'm slinging out features:
  • Jump gates, focusing communities into busy hubs, hence alternate pirating & security risks and possibilites
  • Piloting skills to navigate the jump gates, with bifurcating paths and increasing difficulty the longer the jaunt. Y'know, FLYING stuff ;)
Make Jump gates a community goal. Development breakthrough! We discovered jump gates. Haul tons of goods and mats and let's make that gate happen. Let's build a network of it.

No to jump gates, no to any kind of fast travel that diminishes the awe-inspring scale of the real galaxy that this game provides.

The engineers have already done enough damage to core game design by making the Abyss a triviality.

There will always be a clamour to make this or that easier and it is the game designer's responsibility to resist it.

Except that "the grind" is the single most often cited reason that people burn out on the game. Yes engineering has made certain things accessible that were not previously accessible. That doesn't mean they're "easy". Look at how many have stuck with the latest distant worlds expeditions. A record number signed up, but a record number probably also dropped out after the first couple weeks. Travel is not easy, and none of the solutions I've heard proposed would make it easy. It would make it more accessible to those who know what they're doing and have skill and/or resources to make it happen. However, it would still be a challenge, and keep the scale and awe of the size of the Galaxy intact. It would also lively up the game by creating some new dynamics for those who want to see the game progress in a new and interesting direction. You will be free to travel the old way to your heart's content.

This.

Why?
No one forces you to use it. If it helps people to skip a mind numbing jump/honk/scoop trip of a few hours because they want to go Colonia, then by all means - let them skip it and enjoy the game. If you prefer to use the neutron highway or one system as a time - Blaze your own trail.
Personally, I find these long journeys just tedious and repetitive. Nothing really awe-inspring there. Sure, the first time it's a WHOA! The 2nd and any subsequent time it's more of a belt sander to the face, fire up any kind of movie because this trip just sucks the big one.

For some.
Instant gratification isn't fast enough.
I see in many games. Mounts, wings to fly, fast travel nodes.
I prefer to play the game.
Never understood the mentality to waste time playing a video game, then want to get thru it as fast as possible.
In bubble fast travel, never going to happen. Give it a rest.

It's not about instant gratification, but about removing the repetitive gameplay. If you take the classic route to Colonia, no Neutron Highway, at say 75 LY per jump, 22000 LY distance, for about 293 jump. 1 jump takes about 1 minute, from arriving, scooping, aligning, getting out of the heat area, charging FSD and jumping. So that's 293 minutes, or just shy of 5 hours of doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Did you read all of the "and over"s? If not, why not? too repetitive? It was only 15, yet you are happy to Jump 300 times and not complain about it.

Some might not have that much time at hand, or the patience to repeat this procedure 300 times. So some "shortcut" to reduce this to say 20 - 30 jumps, would make a trip to Colonia much more palatable and feasible. Especially people who work all day, have a family to look after and don't get more than an hour or two of game time per day. And then of course the significant other might want some attention too.

That's a personal problem. Not a problem with the game.
Actually, that is a problem with the game. Repeating the same task with little to no variance for 5 hours is not gameplay. That's just time wasting.
If I want to do something tedious and not entertaining for 5 hours, I'd get a 2nd job.

Fair enough.

Plenty of blame to go around for the gradual degradation of this game's setting all around, I guess.

Here's hoping that the current team can turn this beast around, and that the last update wasn't a fluke. :)
Agreed. I liked most of the beyond series of updates, so in my view it's already heading in the right direction. Hopefully it will continue so.

The game never forces that on you. You choose to do that. Just because the games allows you to do that is not the games fault.
Uhm, that IS one of the game mechanics. Scoop fuel, align to next destination, charge FSD, jump.
So yes, it is the game's fault, as it is forced on you to do that. Doing it a few times, because it's the game's mechanism is one thing - but forcing you to do it close to 300 times is bad game design.
Why can't we build a jump gate? For those who have done it a few times already and been to colonia and SagA* before? They can take the shortcut, as a reward for previous work.

The game does not force you to do that continuously for 5 hours. That's your choice.
