ANNOUNCEMENT April Update - Coming 23 April 2019

The text reads "can only be accessed by pilots until they earn their first Combat, Trade or Exploration rank " this will be the first promotion in any of the 3 disciplines and not Elite

Yes, the original text got changed. From memory it did state 'Elite rank' but it meant 'any rank you can get in Elite' not a rank of Elite. It was confusing, so Will changed it.

FDev will need to complete their internal tests to comfirm any interactions between new elements are identified (integration testing).and fixed if so,
If one feature is causing issues then it may be pulled, thus making any previous announcements invalid.

Based on past experience I would say you are giving FDev an undeserved amount of credit for their internal testing. See the FSD Booster for just one example.

How would SC Assist work if the target is almost, but not quite, obscured by something massive? Will it send me skimming just above the clouds of a gas giant to get to a station on the far side, or will it have the good sense to swing me out around a deep gravity well?

Ditto with close passes to hot stars, white dwarfs etc.

I'm hoping it will at least use a "you will not go any closer than your destination already is" test.

I misinterpreted it too (before it was clarified), fortunately my comment was ambiguous enough that I got away with it ;)

Friend you got it wrong the idea is for playets to get better not worse, better players better game. Now I wont complain that I am excluded from 100m olympics because I really cant run, not my thing, if ED or whatever else is too much for you do something else or improve yourself. Include all because of fashion politics and you get mediocre results, I dont want mediocre I want better, what about you ?
I actually think a majority of new players will learn. Or at least docking will be a part of the game that they look at and consider learning and to excel at eventually.
I don't use docking computers and find docking to be a trivial affair. The first thing I did after reading this announcement was to look at my library of ships and see what I could do with the additional module slots. It turns out I can do a lot.
As players progress and start customizing their ships they are also going to start prioritizing their modules, including docking modules. So I suspect that new players will learn, it's just going to take longer and hopefully, by the time they are at this stage, they'll consider it worth their effort to learn and excel.

What's not ambiguous is that Frontier had perfect timing in smashing in the faces of the hardcores, and telling them the game needs new players. Bad.

Elite can no more afford to be the hyper-niche game, and hope to be commercially successful. Especially with a two-year gap.

Unless a real alternative appears in the projected time before the next paid DLC, the hardcores will have to eat crow, and their ego's, and let Elite become a more mainstream game to survive.

Yes, as long as I'm able to continue to play the game I bought I don't think it's going to affect me in any negative way. And those areas where it might (extra module slots) it's won't be new players creating that negative impact.

I guess from a business perspective new players sticking around long enough to get into more ships (and therefore potentially buying skins for them) is a good thing, and having an easier start to the game will reduce the importance of mentors & community assistance. I've long been an advocate of figuring stuff out for yourself rather than just following a how-to guide.

Soon all we have to do is log in and then go watch a movie while the game plays it's self , might as well have the ship Teleport the goods into your hold and just keep flying past the station lol . Soon the only learning curve left will be where's the switch

Will be using Supercruise Assist be as efficient as changing the speed manually?

Should not be like that. Manual speed changing should still be most efficient way to go in supercruise and using assist should be safe but not most efficient.

I just can't help feeling that there'll be a post like this in May/June from a new player.

"Hey, devs, what's with this waste of time watching my ship have to dock at a station or outpost? I just press the button and sit back doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for 2 minutes. Surely for the sake of gameplay couldn't we just go straight to the starport services screen? I could fit in an extra two missions an hour without having to sit through the 'docking video' every time. Can't we put in an option to switch it off altogether?"

Add pepper to taste....

That's exactly what will happen when we start on this slippery slope!

It's good to know I can count on your support once we start pushing for the full removal of Flight Assist from the game, brother!

I'm curious how many players will be intercepted in auto-SC mode while they out for tea or WC :coffee::sneaky:

I'm sure there will be lots of winning on the forums when this happens. "but but the autopilot should take care of it for me < whine whine whine>"

I've read too many posts that suggest the flying should be almost automatic without player interaction. What these people want is "easy mode".

You have to be lined up with your target, so I'm guessing you can't be blocked by planets / suns.

But what does that mean? Is everyone who has the rank of Elite a hardcore player? Is a guy with 1000 hours but no Elite rank less hardcore than someone with 200 hours and double Elite? Why, exactly, should those players (who are also probably the game's most active players) be forced to eat crow? Does blocking long time players from content promote trust among newcomers that they will not be treated the same way? Will blocking hardcores from... something (?) change the game design?

So many questions!

Players should use autoSC at their own risk.

Despite the fact that i hate being interdicted, i can't blame someone else if i'm auto supercruising and doing nothing to shake them off my back.

In my opinion, autoSC should be automatically disabled in case of interdiction as it should be considered an emergency requiring a manual override.

I am absolutely pleased to get a quality of life update like this.
I appreciate the developer's getting this done in such a timely manner.
Thanks ever so much!

I'd guess that like the DC, you'll have to zero the throttle to let it engage. In which case it will automatically submit to an interdiction. It wouldn't be safe to go AFK if it works like that. Could be fun. :)

I think the "idea" of the gankers is to create a new account that they'll always wipe after gaining first combat rank. Experienced gankers will still wreck havoc in these systems, even in low level, unengineered ships. That's what I've gathered, not that I get the mindset behind it...
Step one: have a friend complete a wing assassination or other combat related mission (ie. one that doesn't count towards trade rank, and I'm not sure there are any wing missions that count towards exploration)
Step two: join their wing, cash in, get a million or so smackeroonies without advancing any ranks whatsoever as only kills count towards combat rank, not missions
Step three: A-rate your murderwinder and give it mirror plating as every other newbie in those systems will be running the starting fixed pulse lasers, go ahead and gimbal if you want since even chaff costs more than a Mostly Penniless CMDR has earned
Step four: go on a killing spree until you hit mostly harmless
Step five: reset your save and repeat
