Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I don't know how you will feel after your first negative encounter, but watch you six.Pretty much like planet planting, the game is good at lulling you into a false sense of security and then punishing inattention.Add humans into the mix and it becomes chaos.Have fun.
I think Open keeping you on your toes, or at least forcing you to pay attention to your surroundings a little bit, is actually one of the nice things.
Yes, from time to time you're going to run into a... person of questionable manners ...but let's be honest, we all have more money than we know what to do with, so it's more like a minor annoyance. The only difference mentally is that you dying sometimes isn't entirely your fault, but once you've dealt with that, Open is nice and I've had vastly higher number of good encounters than bad ones. :)
Now that I think about it, all friends I have in game, I MET in game. Except two, maybe, who are "meta friends" from here. So there's that.

I don't disagree with any of this (well, except the meta friends bit, maybe, ymmv). In my time in open(about 2 years) i had two encounters with gankers, one of which i purposely sought out to see if the rumours were true.It was a fun, though bruising evening and highly instructive, and the hardcore PVP crowd acted as gentlemen,by their own lights.
I had a great time in open.

What I meant by "meta friends" is that when you befriend somebody here on the forum, it doesn't necessarily means you're going to click in game, while when meeting somebody in game, doing similar things or otherwise sit well together, it's more valuable. (I'm sorry to my two meta friends, but you don't play anymore, anyway, so it doesn't matter.)

My Keelback mining dreams have still not come to fruition (although I have bookmarked the build helpfully posted in this thread a while back, thank you) as my Orca proved more lucrative than expected, so much so that last night I bought a Beluga. I have never flown one before, the bridge is enormous, and once I have the money to kit it out I suspect it will feel a little like piloting the Enterprise. Plan is to engineer/A rate it and then head out in an indirect route to Colonia (never been there), exploring as I go (as it seems to have space for pretty much everything I'd want to take), then try mining out there. But so far loving how different the ship feels, without being too unwieldy, and that is with no engineering and many modules C or D rated.

Sounds cool. How do you find slipping through the slot? I hear it can be tricky due to the tailfins.
I have only docked it half a dozen times so far, scraped it on my first go but haven't even touched since then. From my extensive experience (!), I'd say that patience is the key - I just leave it longer on entering than I have previously before I then alter trajectory towards my specific pad. I imagine that seeing something coming the other way would be alarming, but the slot itself seemed fine. And I currently only have C rated thrusters, so will only get easier. I know that there's a honeymoon period but I really like it so far. 85m credits gets an awful lot of flexible slot space inside, plus the canopy is enormous so am looking forward to my first exploration run. Will likely just take a long distance passenger first time out, get a feel for it. But honestly it was easier than I thought through the slot. Easier than my old T10 from my first save.

After leaving Colonia last week, I headed out towards the north-west rim and was making good progress with a string of untagged systems and my usual glut of waterworlds. After about 100-ish jumps (around 3,500ly I guess), I discovered a system with multiple bio signals. What I failed to notice was that the planet I chose to investigate had 3.8g gravity. Failed to notice, that is, until I planted the AspX face-first into the surface at speed. Hull integrity immediately dropped to 17%.

So, big mistake, but I got away with it, and a major lesson learned!

I've now turned about and am heading back towards Colonia for repairs (on a slightly different tack so I'm still picking up plenty of exploration data). If I can avoid any more foolishness I should make it late tonight, pick up a decent payday, and figure out what to do next. Fingers crossed!

I hope you bookmarked the planet. It sounds worthy of further investigation, bios on a high g world.I wonder what they were?
Anemones maybe?
I'm travelling parrallel to the lens and i've bumped into the back end of 2 or 3 planets. But nothing very serious so far.I too often forget to check until it's almost too late, but i'm getting better at pulling up in time.I do tend to choose low g planets to land, though.
High G i generally pass up if an alternative is available,so i guess i've learnt something.
Hope you make it back to port in one piece.

I've been indulging in some minor faction work in a small backwater of the Empire. I know I said this before, but I am really glad I moved to Empire space, it just feels so "jolly pleasant". Everyone is so well dressed, and terribly well-spoken. There was a much larger population centre I visited whilst doing some delivery work, and the gentleman on Imperial Flight Operations sounded as though he was sat bolt-upright, wearing a dinner-jacket with a bow-tie on, behind a desk somewhere.Possibly with a large hexagonal microphone in front of him.

That's more like it. Proper order. Proper order, I tell you. <taps finger on desk pointedly>

:)

I also conducted my first planetary raid, to get data from an installation. I was rather nervous about it, as I only saw the "Elite" rank recommendation after clicking "accept". But, as it turned out, it was actually very easy to get in there, knock out the skimmers and defense turret, and complete the scan. +++++ Rep and +++++ Inf in one go, along with a cool 1.2 million in the bank. I might do more of those!

Forgot to bookmark it in all the excitement, but I did get a Codex entry so hopefully the system will be in there. And, yes, they were bioluminescent anenomes. There was another planet in the same system with more bio signals, so I'm curious to know what they are, too.
