Why do YOU play In Open?

I love reading all the stories about how people went into open and then got shot and then never wanted to come back. It's a whole new world compared to where we are.

Well, if you all want open without the gankers, and 75% the rest of the general ED population, come and play the game in open down under (AU/NZ time zone). We here don't see much, I can supercruise straight to Jameson Memorial from Shinrarta Dezhra in a straight line without interruption, the most irritating thing about visiting any engineers is the stupid robot voice at their bases, and you can't even spook people by turning up in a warship and pretending to chase people in supercruise while continuously honking the horn (discovery scanner). Being attacked by another player is just about newsworthy. Heck, seeing another player outside of our time zone is almost newsworthy. Best thing is that if you and all the local folks live at the same station, you can meet up and do stuff. It's like a giant private group, but without the restrictions. I enjoy seeing other CMDRs (outside of our lot) out there but they pretty much ignore me and so I go on and do my thing. I'd like to experience the outer space wild west that y'all seem to have. We just have the tumbleweeds. Perhaps a VPN terminating in the UK or US might work.

I didn't say there were no player killers however, I think there are a couple of infamous names that hang around with our lot and occasionally shoot at us, but running in to them is like winning the lottery. I have a story about that, which I may have posted elsewhere. Good times.

An alternative to "if you don't want to see CMDRs, go elsewhere". Here's it's more like "elsewhen".

I play open most of the time because I prefer the chance to meet real people in the ED universe - even if it’s just for a brief o7. But being based in NZ I rarely see people apart from Shinrarta Dezhra or CG's etc... I don't mind playing Solo and would certain still play even if this was the only mode but I do prefer open.

I play in open, I don't bother with anyone but I like the idea of other commanders being active and present in the same universe. It makes it feel more alive.

and then there is "Space Facebook" where it's all about talking on Discord about politics and religion while driving SRVs in circles, LOL.

Just like the Spaghetti through hot dogs recipe, this sounds equally horrendous.

sorta disgusting...

I've play mostly in Private Group (usually in a wing) lately. When I do play in Open, it's for the camaraderie and meeting other Commanders. I bought Elite Dangerous over NMS years ago because it had multiplayer, it's a major selling point.

That looks awesome. I have to show this to the granddaughters. They'll want some ... and so will I. ... never thought to try that

I play in open to meet other Cmdrs, and to socialise with the random Cmdrs I meet out in the black, most I've met this way have become good friends..
Mostly...
Only last night sitting in Ohm city, in my un-shielded Dbx, in a party with a good friend, who due to the recent xbox live issues, was unable to play..
Suddenly two random dudes that I aint never met, add me as a friend and go on too basically start trying to ram me as I sat there on the pad.
Now I did a quick check on the con panel to see who this dude in the Kriat mk ll was, currently making love eyes at my bright yellow "Thunderbird 4" Dbx.
And lo an behold, He's rocking 5 plasma railguns, 3 guardian shield mods, and a bunch of other instakill tech, so I say to myself, "I'm gonna screw with this guy" so, I make out I'm about to leave by raising the pad again, (I moved to hanger to do a bit of " secret squirreling ". All of a sudden, he joins my friends party to demand I leave and face him in my little tug.. I stayed silent.. Waiting.. Next he demanded that I change my ships name to some random tag, cant remember the name, but there squadron was called "Ganc" tbh. Never gonna happen, all my ships are named for my daughter.
Next he states he just wants to "shoot something fun" and to "come out an play"..
Its at this point I speak...

( Now I'm ex services, I was in the military for a few years and been about a bit)...
Anyway...

I abhor bully's and all those that feel the need to pick on people that are weaker or less able to look after themselves... So..

...I remind him that I've no idea who he is!
or why he and his Budd have suddenly joined our party.
And also, that if he wants a challenge.. then to go shoot at his buddy,( waiting at this point, outside the station), who was far more capable of giving him a fight, but alas.. No. He states " You shouldn't be playing in open then" and "I can do what I want...(self entitled much?)
Now I get that, open is a risk. If you play in open your gonna experience the bad, just as well as the good.
I've seen all the threads and follow all procedures in each system that I enter, I try to counter them with all tools I can.
Also i agree with most points on this forum. In regards to "griefing" an "ganking" and fully expect it.

Now, the next bit of "socialising" was basically him and his wee friend, basically trying to farm salt so to speak. Stating I'm posting that, and Im reporting you to Fdev for "logging" (I pretended I was leaving Ohm and pulled my game as I was leaving the station, as he was sitting right at the slot, waiting) Now, not once did he damage me, nor hinder my playing, other than being a donkey's a**.
Now onto my point, I expect this.. I know what to look for and how to avoid them. (both were blocked and I changed instance by logging out and back in after I had blocked em!).
Has anyone else experienced this? As in, people randomly joining your private chat and basically trying to bully someone?

I've been thinking about this lately. In another thread someone mentioned the larger player base as a reason to switch to PC. Yet here I am currently stuck in Solo because I hit my monthly bandwidth cap, now waiting for it to reset. Thing is, I'm enjoying what I am doing in Solo and likely wouldn't have encountered any CMDRs here where I'm doing it, at least not on PS4. And then there's the whole "pay to play (in open)" aspect to consoles.

There are three reasons that come to mind that people seem to love Open in ED. One is PvP, another is Group PvE (wing missions, expeditions, etc.), and then there is "Space Facebook" where it's all about talking on Discord about politics and religion while driving SRVs in circles, LOL. Of these, only Group PvE has ever truly interested me, and even this I can live without.

For me personally, the shared galaxy is what makes playing ED feel like a 'community' experience, regardless of game mode. Even if I don't see a hollow square or "o7" in my comms, I know that we're all shaping this galaxy together with our actions, be it the BGS, CGs, discoveries, etc. It's the thing that keeps drawing me back to ED over other cool but 'lonely' games like Subnautica.

So to the title, why do YOU play in Open, and would you still enjoy the game if you were either stuck in Solo or an 'empty Open' like we supposedly have on PS4?

Good good question. Yes, double plus good.

I love open.. but not always. I love that I can chose solo if I get annoyed by some open pvp CG blockade or some open pvp engineer blockade. If I want to get on with my personal business, I just can switch solo.

And that's what I also hate about open. It's inconsequential.

So why do I play open?
Answer: I don't have the ressources to devote my time and energy to tight knit groups. Never the less I enjoy that random contact with another human being - and if it is only through the filter of an online game. I also like the risk. Is it a pirate, someone who loves shooting stranger or an intersting person somwher on the other line of the cable?

That's why I play open ... and sometimes circumvent it .. if the pressure get's to much.

TLDR:
It's not space facebook, but good old space CB;
“These lonely long highway sure grind the souls of us cowboys"

People like that are cowards and just want an unfair fight/easy kill. If they actually wanted a challenge, they would head on over to Jameson, open coms and request a fight. But they don't because they are chickens, simple as that. But to answer your question, no, I've never experienced anything nearly as bad as that, just the typical ganker now and then. By the way that person is an idiot, you can log out at a station, it's not against the rules.

Yeah, I even stated when I actually spoke up. I said "If you had of contacted me through the comms panel and actually asked to pvp, I would have obliged. (I have a g3 engineered fdl, wouldn't have stood against him, bit I'd of tried. But he was just looking to "pew, pew" a soft target tbh.. I don't know.
It was quite toxic if I'm honest. It won't and hasn't stopped me playing on open, if anything its made me more prepared lol,

I mostly fly in open because it is a rare experience to even see anyone where I fly out in the black. If I do run into another commander it turns into a meet and greet. It is a nice change from the usual nothingness in space. When out exploring/jumping hundreds of systems, another pilot is a welcome addition.
