Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

Because to achieve that, FDEV need to develop their Cobra engine to be able to support the technology required to create this.

Atmospheres of varied type.
Varied flora.
Varied fauna.
AI for the new creatures.

Many different weather types.
Many different environment types - from lava worlds to water worlds.
Advanced terrain modelling.
Physics.
Models.
Textures.
Animations.
FX of all kinds.
Atmospheric flight model.
Fixed!

Remember, no one is questioning why FD hasn't offered entire world and life simulation. They're asking why haven't then moved a step on from the non-atmospherics introduced over four years ago? ie: The next step could be atmospheric worlds with no life, or just basic procedurally produced plant life.

Yes there would be lots of work to do with terrain and weather etc. But it's all achievable IMHO.

ps: And different world types could still be permitted/denied accordingly. eg: Lava worlds could still be restricted.

You obviously don't follow Sean Murray on Twitter.
And you obviously don't follow FDEV staff on Twitter. They post hourly, but it's just as unrelated to upcoming updates as the stuff Sean Murray posts.

PS
Sean Murray himself said that developers shouldn't talk to the community.

Yes, but 9 time out of 10 it runs on the lines of

1. we're very excited/amazed
2. we'd love to tell you what's happening
3. but we can't
4. as soon as we can
5. we will tell you
6. lave and kisses
Unless they can and then they usually make hundreds of posts and streams.

HG on the other hand waits a week before release until they tell you what it's about. Again, nothing wrong with that.

But I don't get your point...

LOL. I used to follow FDev staff (no more), but their posts usually have nothing to do with ED. NOTHING. Sean is often dropping NMS hints here, there, everywhere.

Correction - I do follow one FDev staffer here on the forums. His handle is Babelfisch, and he posts more apologetic nonsense than Sean Murray and President Trump combined!

Being overly critical isn’t exactly helpful and is precisely why FD doesn’t interact in a meaningful way with the forum.
A handful of people can spam the forums with the same topics over and over and it doesn’t reflect the opinion of the majority of players at all.
Why would FD keep us in the loop when everything gets thrown back in their faces.

Neither is being overly defensive of FD...how does that help?

If their skin is so thin they can't handle criticism then they chose the wrong industry to work in. Go on any game forum, it is exactly the same yet not every developer decides to withdraw into their shells and stop talking to their customers.

This forum was designed for discussion and feedback...that is what they got.

That's great. Crunch time for the Devs because Sean Murray is incompetent and can't release a stable update.
Not my opinion, but that's what people would say about FDEV in a similar situation.
This is true.
It seems that HG got a better reputation than FDEV at the moment. Community Managers should work more on this. All official Frontier videos are full of haters and negative feedbacks.

Yeah but they're about to do it for the third time since elite dangerous itself has been released. You can't argue they selectively lose the ability and suddenly its too hard. 3x 2 year "whole new game".
Third time? Not too sure I understand your meaning here.

Maybe all the skilled devs were just chomping at it for the opportunity to work on a game they would actually go home and play every night. That's fair enough.
What are you talking about.

That's basically what I said.

:D

Why would FD keep us in the loop when everything gets thrown back in their faces.

Because they want us to be interested in their products and services, to be aware of and purchase their current products and accrue goodwill towards any they make in the future.

Its not about throwing faces, its about marketing goodwill. Where are you?

There are very good games that have been developed with much less manpower.
Okay. What games are you talking about and please don't say NMS or X4, thats not the type of space legs I want to see in the game as they are both barebones.

Remember also that the full game "Elite: Dangerous" has been developed with less manpower so it depends on how deep and complex they want to do it. I hope it's gonna be simpler than SC that has got far too many animations. I wish it will be basic movements (no crouch, crawiling and so on) but with more gameplay (missions, exploration).
I don't expect it to be as stupid as SC with loads of aimless and pointless walking around. I hope for a more streamlined version of space legs, but still fully featured.

Surely that depends on the type of criticism and the delivery.
