Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

Regarding communication:

Sean Murray says there will be more updates.
Wow, much communication. Frontier has never done that.

Silence.

Beyond gets announced. That was like 5 months ago. It will be released in summer and there will be improvements to multiplayer. Other than that it will be awesome and exciting.

Silence.

Again, 5 months ago. VR gets announced. We learn that there will be three things, multiplayer and VR and the third thing remains a mystery. That's such an awesome communication strategy...

Silence.

We have a release date! That's like 11 days before the release. Sean Murray also confirms that the multiplayer part will not turn NMS into a MMO. That's good to know 11 days before release.

09.08.2019
We learn that there will be a 32 player cap. The mysterious 3rd part are QOL improvements.

I don't want to bash Hello Games, they created an awesome game (just not my type of thing) and their communication strategy is just as valid as Frontiers.
As I already said multiple times I would not compare FDEV with HG.
HG is silent but has been delivering big contents every year since 3 years. After NEXT (in-between the silence period you refer to) they released another 2 big updates (Visions and Abyss) plus dozens of small patches to fix and add small contents.

FDEV is silent.

So as I said previously, we'd better wait 2020 for any conclusion

Yes, like VR and 32 people multiplayer. FDEV has never done that.
Oh, and also a completely buggy, unplayable, user unfriendly Beyond update that'll take weeks to work properly. That's also something FDEV has never done.
Stop kidding me.

Elite Dangerous is one of the only games where Devs actually do post on the forums.
Have you checked out Planet Zoo? The devs are falling over themselves to post there. Though of course it is a new product that Frontier are keen to promote.

Perhaps it'll be the same next year when Frontier will be keen to be our chums again as they have a new ED related product to flog

FDev are "currently" silent, they used to be "very communicative" but they couldn't live up to/deliver on their own marketing (for ED) and were hammered for it on these very forums. My guess is they have decided to drum down their marketing until they have the product and have arrived at the current level of communication. Not the way I would have done it personally but hey ho it's their choice.

They'll usually post a lot before updates and during beta.

Again, the development of these 2 games can't be really compared. They have a completely different story and background. NMS was not crowdfunded and it started with a much lower badget. The release date was also pushed by Sony, so they were not completely free to decide. Then HG had a boom after NMS launch so they could develop much more after the release than before.
Anyway yesterday evening I tried the Beyond update and I didn't have any big issue so far, not even the preformance issue in VR highlighted by Obsidian Ant with my Oculu Rift. Sure there are things that need to be fixed as always, but I had no Server Disconnect on Patch Day and this is really remarkable 'cause everyone expected it instead.

Then people should stop comparing them. I don't make these comparisons, I just put them into perspective.

You should read the NMS thread in the off topic section. Out of 10 people only one managed to play the game.

You're right too but the smallest image would betray all the secret.

An image of a tree ? We would know that there will be the atmospheric planets.

An image of a toe ? We know that there will be the space legs.

An image can also disappoint people who are not interested by the subject unveiled by the image, and could leave the game immediately (and also the store).

It's a complicated communication situation, it seems.

Not really. Lets say the community is split 33/33/33 between space legs, atmo and [everything else]. Saying it'll be space legs will immediately disappoint 66% of the community. The remainder will be split 33/33/33 between 'yeah but they will probably do spacelegs wrong so boo', 'man this is going to be awesome cant wait to [insert absurd expectation], and finally the more realistic folks. That means almost 90% will be disappointed by the announcement for various reasons and this will stay until FD can show something solid, something that gives the previous nay-sayers hope it is going to be more fun than expected and prevents too much theorycrafting.

If they just say 'spacelegs' it'll be two days of celebrating by the small happy group and then endless complaining and doomsaying from the rest. :p

Easy. Someone who doesn't mark frontier on their actual game release / code / products and commonly increases praise or limits criticism back to their fair score.
Being overly critical isn’t exactly helpful and is precisely why FD doesn’t interact in a meaningful way with the forum.
A handful of people can spam the forums with the same topics over and over and it doesn’t reflect the opinion of the majority of players at all.
Why would FD keep us in the loop when everything gets thrown back in their faces.
