Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

The next update will be as misearble and meagre, riddled with bugs as the previous ones. FDEV/Cobra engine is not capable of delivering a modern game experience. Talking about game - apart from the superb flight model, there is simply no "game". It's great for pew pew and racing and that's it.
Jeez I wouldn’t want you in charge of marketing!

And Elite is what then? A ship driving game in space?

It's an Elite-style game. You fly your spaceship in a 1:1 scale galaxy, you trade between stations, you shoot bad (or good) guys, you do various missions, because that's what Elite was always about.

Of course you can do all of that in NMS, but these activities are an afterthought rather than the core of the gameplay, which now revolves almost entirely around base building, resource gathering and crafting, virtually all of it takes place down on the surface where the resources you need are. Maybe in another year the devs will remember that at its core NMS was meant to be an Elite-style game too and go back to developing the space activities, but in the meantime NMS and ED satisfy very different needs.

Also:

All this nonsense about 'cartoon' graphics. It din't stop Blizzard have 15m+ subscribers playing their game did it. So please, stick to someone real and tangible. The realism of your Elite worlds stops the moment you visit some system you never heard of. And I'd wager, that's 99% of players.

Just because Blizzard (and NMS to an extent) are succesful with cartoony graphics doesn't mean anything for ED. It works for these games because their playerbases enjoy it and NMS is meant to take place in a simulation where by nature anything is possible and Warcraft always had a cartoony look. Part of what makes the Elite franchise is its (relatively) hard sci-fi setting and the decision to try and keep things believable. I enjoy NMS for what it is, and in NMS the whacky planets add to the charm, but they would be wildly out of place in ED, and I certainly expect that Frontier will respect, if not reality, at least my expectations that the incidence of blue grass and hopping johnsons will be kept to a minimum on their atmospheric worlds.

I don’t think that many would dispute that Frontier have held good to their word that much would not be implemented at release, but Frontier laid heavy emphasis on what would be coming after release and much of that is still to come (minus whatever comes with 2020 vision).
And I expect that it's still on the roadmap.

Elite is a simulator in the sense that the primary thing provided is in the enjoyment of the mechanics / operating the machinery. It’s a simulator game.

People much better qualified than me could explain why its technically not a space simulator at all.. would that be Kerbal Space Program?

It’s easy to get confused because frontier constantly make half hearted overtures to not be a simulator.. somehow without trying to provide the only thing that would make it mainstream.. the campaign. There’s so much great lore too....

Just as a reminder, that's what we were supposed to get from 2014-2024:

  • Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
That's in the game since 2016.
  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
That's probably coming in 2020 if the leak is legit.
  • Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
After 2020 they still have 4 years to implement it.
  • Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players
That's coming end of the year via fleet carriers.

I wouldn't call ED that boring, but ymmv.
I'd say YMMV is the key to all of this "Elite is the greatest game" vs "Elite is the most boring game" arguments. I think Pokémon Go is a stupid boring game, but to declare that as a universal constant would be silly. Different strokes for different folks.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go create an account on the Pokémon Go forum and demand they copy ED to let me search for Pokémon on other planets.

(ps - EBL is a universal truth. I have the science to prove it!)

People are completely missing the point in comparing NMS to ED. We're talking about atmospheric landings and planet variation with flora and fauna. Yes, they are cartoonish in NMS but it demonstrates that a small team can achieve it. Whatever the procedurally generated stuff looks like, is another subject entirely.

Yes it is a small team and to be honest, it shows.

The point is that RNG to pick some colors and biomes is not even in the same league as what the literal astrophysics team is trying to do with Elite.

Of course I do, you don't have an idea what I am talking about, which is fine. Look, if you fancy running around a Mc Donalds ball bath with a super soaker that matches the color of your heels all the while being chased by a beluga with 6 legs, go knock yourself out. If you bring it to the table in a discussion about how 💩 ED is however, do not expect me to nod in agreement, with a straight face. 🤭

As I said you have no idea what you're talking about.
The discussion isn't about either game's style or looks but about their development, what's been accomplished through the years.
You clearly don't like NMS's style, that's your prerogative, but that doesn't have anything to do with how it's being developed and supported by it's devs compared to how ED is being developed.

ED is a sim...

Can hear my engines in space... Fails at first test..
Can Hyperspace... Eh no we can't... fail..
Can mine asteroids.. Eh no we can't... fail..

I wont bother going on..

The very best that be said is it's a gamey simmy thing..

Half the problem with Elite is Frontier don't know themselves what it is!
