Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

Because Earth is the only discoverd planet with life on it that we know of. what would you model somthing after with out a frame of referance that will please everyone
According to the game lore there are hundreds of ELW populated... Do you think that people live only on orbital stations?

I think the point being made for Earth-like worlds is that the clue is in the name.

There’s a difference between human-habitable and Earth-like.

In Elite Dangerous all ELW are all habitable so there's no such difference in the game.
The point I was trying to make is that ELW by their very nature will look like Earth (and I think CMDR-ss47ply was also making that point). Terraformed worlds would also resemble Earth.

I’d hope to see human-habitable worlds in the game of a more exotic and alien nature, but then they couldn’t be really described as Earth-like anymore.

Some Rocky Ice Planets look really exotic and also HMC's looks very interesting. Rocky and Ice planets are instead all very similar. So if there will be some nice variation I think it will be for the first 2 types.

This is an exotic Rocky Ice Planet with atmosphere:

I’ve done quite a few close fly-bys of various atmospheric worlds with avaricious eyes - lava worlds have been something I’ve been hoping for since Horizons dropped (I think the hinted at volcanism turned out to be our spitty farty campfires) - recently playing Vader Immortal, the opening sequence features a descent onto Mustafar and it’s spectacular. I’d love to experience that in Elite.

They're already there... in spirit...

Besides, isn't the purpose of the NPC crew just to be a money drain? Paying for their help which is basically useless? If you really want to sink money, get a bunch of NPC crew members that just sit at the bar in the station while you're out making money, and you still pay them.

It seems zero hour contracts have been banned ;)

I've played that too, the intro is really awesome!

If only they could physically sit in our cockpits...

Earth itself has some very exotic places. I hope that Stellar Forge makes realistic ELWs when the day comes. Warmer ELWs would be more jungle like, whereas colder ones might look more like Alaska. Of course multiple biomes on a single planet would be nice. I can even see different color vegetation based on star color and intensity. Higher gravity worlds would have trees with thicker stalks and branches, and low gravity worlds with be thinner and vine-like, etc.

What I don't want is just RNG whatever like NMS has. On the other hand, NMS does a decent job at giving us some variety (even if it is Mr. Potato Head), which I'd much prefer over ED's copy-n-paste of brain trees of different colors.

Aye indeed, I’ve been very fortunate in visiting some amazing and diverse places over the past few decades.

Given the Stellar Forge proc-gen involved in the current planets, with simulated tectonic plates to establish mountain ranges, chemical composition to give the colours etc. I truly hope that atmospherics will get the same level of thought put into their creation, as well as any life forms, as per your ideas above.

NMS was created from the outset to look like classic sci-fi book covers, which is one of the reasons why it has static planets close together. It can have some truly awesome vistas (as well as RNG you what?’s). Elite however has always gone for Galaxy-sim, so I’m hoping for stuff that’s a bit more Earthy on our Earth-likes.

Your faith in Lord Braben is touching, but I think he's too busy enjoying real biomes in his kickstarter-funded yacht to care much about ED these days.
I know you aren't serious, but just for the record...

Kickstarter added 1.578.316£ to the development budget. That's less than a quarter of the initial development costs of the base game.

For Balance do you know how much a Yacht costs?
