Why can we only Land on Barren Planets after almost 5 years?

3. Considering we had the same complaints about 1.0 and 2.0 (and everything in between) it's likely that some people just aren't easily pleased.

To be fair, if the next big thing isn't 'exciting' I'll probably be just as disappointed as everyone else. But claiming that everything from 1.0-2.0 was received well by the entire community would be an alternative fact.
That's for sure, after all PP was 1.3. Many didn't and still don't like it.

I think they were safely way ahead of the competition. Seen this happening many times in business. Companies thinking they're the king of the hill with their product until someone cheaper and better suddenly comes out from a competitor.
I don't think so. Elite was always a niche game and I am pretty sure that FDEV was aware of it. Anyway, which competitor? So far there aren't any other meaningful open world space games with the scope of ED. The next thing will be SC and it's not unlikely we'll have space legs and atmospheric planets when it gets released...

Full production started while Beyond was still in development so:
[SPECULATION MODE ON]
FDEV has got 2 teams:
Team 1: with a lot of experienced developers for full production projects
Team 2: with less people, most of them new employees with scholastic experience and interns managed by some more experienced guys, for small contents and updates.

ED was developed by Team 1. After the initial game release FDEV created Team 2 who kicked-in for smaller updates while Team 1 was working on Horizons 2.0.
After the Horizons 2.0 release, Team 2 kicked-in again and Team 1 moved to other projects (theme parks, jurassic bla bla).
Since then we're left with Team 2.
During 2018 Team 1 apparently started the full production of the New Era, so ED is bound to stay with Team 2 for another year and a half.

[SPECULATION MODE OFF]

I`ve been hearing this sort of speculations since before launch... It`s the vertical slice and magical patch all over again....

And this part is not really true, unless you count 2 guys doing some early prototyping as Team 1

Not just PP. Lots of people criticised 1.0 (not just because of the bugs). People already claimed Elite is dead before it was released. The first year basically just brought us Wings, (which according to the forums didn't work most of the time), CGs (which got lots of criticism, not just for the name), PP and CQC.
I also remember lots of discussions and criticism about 2.0. The POI system, the SRV refuel mechanic, no seamless transitions, no caves, etc.

That's how they were ahead of the game, by owning a niche. But every niche is eventually filled with more than a single player. We're not there yet, but it's happening or will happen at some point. Many of the games that can't compete with Elite are knocking on the door, even if they're not in yet, it's getting there. People are expressing concern because the other games stand outside the gates with pitchforks and torches. :)

You'll find most people would disagree strongly with that, and that the mining 2.0 in ED hands-down beats the mining in NMS, X4, Star Citizen, Rebel Galaxy et cetera. While it is one thing to be critical or ambitious, if you consider the best an entire genre has offered in its entire existence to be 'worryingly poor' and 'ill-considered', maybe you've reached the point where you are expecting unreasonably much. This is not Mining Simulator 2019, and yes, you can always imagine something cooler. There is not a single thing in any computer game where I cannot conceive it to be better. But if that is the bar you've set, I can promise you you will be persistently and consistently disappointed for the rest of your life.

You make a good point IMO, but... "mining 2.0" consisted only of asteroids. Here was an opportunity to revamp resource gathering across the board - and they kept it simple & self-contained as a mini-game. It's the same with the new exploration tools... what defines your rank is only the money you make from exploration - not where you've been or what you've discovered. You can get Elite Exploration in a few days pretty easily by flying around the bubble.

Both of these enhancements (whilst OK as far as they go) were an opportunity to revamp things & make them better and more integrated. This is why they are 'half-baked'. Because they all exist in isolation, and the things that they do link to have not been touched & remain the same placeholder since 2014.

If you look at what updates have happened in NMS over the last three years - every new mechanic has been implemented in such a way as to take into account everything else, and if it didn't fit, change that too. And they had the issue of player permanence in the game to deal with - nothing you do in E: D has any "physical" effect on the galaxy or remains when you log off.

That has been said about SC and NMS since 2014 and so far it never became true... ;)

NeilF was specifically talking about that, and if he thinks that is so terrible he is bound to be constantly disappointed. Surface mining is absolutely bare-minimal in ED for sure though.
Now now... I've tried to be clear(er)/fair on my views on Mining 2.0 :) - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...er-almost-5-years.519487/page-36#post-7956028

Again, Mining 2.0 is definately an improvement on Mining 1.0. But there are numerous unnecessary issues with it from balancing, to mining mechanics, to Hotspot mechanics. All/most of which should have been fairly obvious during design IMHO. All/most of which should have been fairly obviously during internal testing IMHO. Yet there they all are at release...

And for that reason, along with 3-4yrs of other rather generally mediocre and questionable developments, I have worries FD with be able to deliver their "huge" new development next year with well considered and designed gameplay and mechanics.

I dearly hope my concerns prove groundless!

I suspect a lot more players are playing NMS this last week than ED though. I don't think Elite will die a sudden and horrible death, but it will dwindle in players, and to get players back, you need new and shiny things... always and continuously. Software rarely die suddenly. They tend to die in a whimper.

Or with thunderous applause.

The thing is that I can look at any part of any game, conceive of something in my mind that is better, and say that 'it should be fairly obvious' that what I want is better than reality. Well, yeah, sure. I am not arguing that you can think of something better. What I am saying is that at some point we all have to learn to accept that fantasy beats reality. No space game ever has done what you apparently think is the bare minimum required to satisfy your mining demands. So if you will be disappointed if FD won't meet or exceed your dreams, then yes, you will be disappointed. You wont like space legs be cause you can imagine a cooler version of it. You wont like atmo planets because you can imagine a cooler version of it. Whatever FD does, you, me and literally everyone on this planet can dream up something cooler.

Those concerns will not prove 'groundless', but you may reassess your concerns. :p

Sure. And when ED releases an update more people play ED. Generally speaking on average ED has slightly more player, but it has a very consistent pattern with seasonal trends. NMS is much more erratic, with frequent periods of extremely low activity followed by bursts of massive playercounts. Their peak is literally 10x higher than EDs, and that is just on PC.

ED will reach the release of Next Era with +-5k simultaneous players on a 24hr period, and whatever happens when it releases will determine the future of the franchise. Personal prediction is that it needs to hit a minimum of 20k to please the board. :)

That's why I try to keep my anticipations down. Less chance of disappointment. :)

The initial release of NMS was a huge disappointment to most buyers, but not to me, because I didn't buy into the hype. I just wanted to be able to walk around on an alien planet. That was it. So I was stoked beyond belief and happy with what I got.

And honestly, I'm looking forward to whatever comes in September, December, next year, because I'm just happy we get something. Elite is still the leading space-sim game for me, but the competition is getting tougher.

I heard Kerbal Space Program 2 (KSP2) next year is going to be extreme, and have interstellar flight in a large universe, and base building, and ... the graphics look real, except for the green little men. :D

Precisely why "New Era" needs to shine. Big time. There will be at least one more NMS update before then, and SC will... well, I'm not sure what SC will do. 🤷‍♀️

I've no idea what they're doing, but I just hope that New Era doesn't ultimately launch with "Welcome to the New Era. Same as the Old Era."
