Under 10 minutes...

Can I steal that?

I wanna steal that.

Yeah, I'm gonna steal that.

Time for another scoreboard update!

So first of all a new run from Nickweb85 who's switched from his Asp Explorer to a Dolphin named "Slippery Sausage", changed his tactics somewhat and shaved a massive 23 minutes off his time to boooost himself into 4th place (halfway between Twospoons and Edelgard) with an excellent sub-30 minute run.

Then we have a brand new run from Buckyball first timer punkydrummer01 flying A combat build Krait MkII excellently named the "Loot Krait". Finishing in just a shade under 30 mins and barely a minute behind Buckyball regular Edelgard von Rhein, he drops into 6th place with a time just a tad under 30 mins. Bravo and welcome to the Buckyball Racing Club!

At this point I'd like to note two important things:

a) Tomorrow I plan to start revealing a bit more about the exact times people have achieved.

b) I'm noting down people's chosen category choices in a little table with choices flagged as A, B or C. At this point only Twospoons77 and Azzie Elbub have made exactly the same choices. For better or worse nobody has yet to spell out ABACAB!

That may be due to the problem that reliable crashed SRVs are very rare - and the reported locations aren't exactly next door to Millese.

First, I want to get my time "under 30 minutes", that should be possible. After that, I might pick up that gauntlet. I have no idea on how to get even close to that 10 minute time.

BTW - some of the pictures might be conceivably taken from either the ship or the SRV. Will pictures taken from the SRV also be acceptable?

Nope - sorry, I simply can't let that travesty be what people, uneducated in the true nature of Genesis, take away from this forum thread.

Oi! Collins! Get back on the drums where you belong!!

MAGNIFICENT! And anyone who says otherwise can get out!

Millese System

Commander Ibrahim Nagi (retired) dropped his Imperial Cutter Rose of the Desert onto the docking pad, letting his shields absorb his momentum, and ignoring the indignant squeak from the local ATC. He stretched luxuriously, as the com panel lit up with two new messages. One was from the daughter of his old friend, may he rest in peace. The second was from the "Vizier" (as he liked to call her) of one of his previous apprentices, Commander Inga Stevenson. As little as ten years ago, he would've worried about such a greeting. He'd nearly had a heart attack when he saw Inga's familiar face grinning at him back in 3295, fearing he had become dangerously predictable. Instead, he had the "privilege" of getting a preview of the next generation of Witchspace drives: the Frame Shift Drive.

He had retired the next year, after taking on one last apprentice: young Beth Johanson. The girl should've been grateful that he had put off his long overdue retirement for one last trip out into the Black. Instead, she had taken offense that the FSD had had its debut two weeks after they had departed for the Frontier. The old man shook his head. 'The Frontier doesn't have the meaning it once did. Ten years ago, travelling here from Cemiess would've me taken several months of extremely uncomfortable travel in Slave of the Empire. Today, it takes but a hour or two.'

Roshni Narang was waiting for him at the end of the ramp. "Welcome to Millese, Ibrahim. I trust your trip went well?"

"Very well, my dear. Although I do wish the Federal Authorities would spend more time dealing with crime, and less time harrassing innocent pilgrims. Our departure was delayed by two days because the Feds didn't trust the paperwork from the Empire. Some of the more... proactive pilgrims were preparing to launch a rescue mission, though cooler heads prevailed. So, tell me... how is Beth doing?"

Roshni winced as they entered a nearby transporter. "Gyeong didn't release her to race until today, because she had obtained a valuable contract that required a Pilots' Federation member. She still needed to make a trip out to Felicity Farseer's base, and of course to gather up some materials. She just arrived an hour ago."

"When I asked you to intervene on her behalf, I didn't expect you to enslave her!"

"If I had just swooped in and saved her, she would've learned nothing from her mistakes. If I had done nothing, she probably would've been killed by those she'd betrayed. This way, she's alive to learn some lessons her parents' obviously failed to do in the past. Or at the very least, learn from her father's mistakes."

"For someone who allegedly shut down her father's little project, you seem to be still following his scenario."

"Just because I didn't agree with his ends, doesn't mean I don't think some of his means had merit. After all, you played your role in his scenario for fifty years. If you didn't think his plans had merit, you could've said 'No.'"

The old man laughed. "True. We both have our hands dirty. Our only solace is that they aren't nearly as dirty as some. But let us speak of more pleasant things. If Beth hasn't been racing, what have you been doing?"

"Mostly watching the racing coverage," Roshni said, as they entered her suite. "Given that Sagittarius Eye is hosting this event, the local authorities have been a little more tolerant than normal to the BRC's antics, so there's a bit more coverage than normal. All the major mega-networks are present: ABC, FNN, ANN, SBC, ISN... even SWAN."

"SWAN? I haven't heard of them."

"Stevenson Whirlwind Adventures News. A couple of Inga's people are studying journalism and film, so they've been maintaining the company newsletter, and Gyeong bought airtime for them on the local networks. Mostly they just run footage of previous Buckyball Races that Inga participated in, as well as some of the movies Abby Wong was in. They were also showing performances of Doctor Sparkle's Family Fun Time Revue, at least until the local censorship bureau stepped in." She switched on the suite's large entertainment system.

"Abby Wong? I don't recognize the name."

"Friend of Inga's. She's a rising action star, but to date has mostly played supporting roles. That's her right there."

Ibrahim was surprised to see a familiar face. "Nearly a trillion human beings, and the two of them just happen to be friends?"

Rashni started counting off on her fingers. "First, they're both Imperials, so that cuts down the odds a bit. Second, Abby's an action star, and so needs to maintain her level of fitness. Third, she's under contract with Acheron Broadcasting Company, which maintains a training facility on Emerald. Fourth, her first big break would be in a movie that persuaded the BRC to act as stunt flyers. Fifth, Abby is a method actress, even on minor roles, and likes to do her research. Sixth, there was only one Imperial Buckyballer based off of Emerald, who enjoys doing 'Adrenaline Tours' for those willing to pay. It was inevitable."

"I see..."

On the screen, the movie stopped playing, replaced with the SWA logo. "We interrupt this presentation of 'Gone in Sixty Seconds,' to bring you this special news broadcast.' We go live to reporter Beth Johanson, at the Print Works."

Beth Johanson (onscreen, looking off screen): Why does this skirt have to be so short?
Inga Stevenson (offscreen): The skirt's not short, you're just tall. At least that fantasy pseudo-Arabian style from the early 3290's went out of style. If you want to talk about unpractical...

Ibrahim pinched the bridge of his nose. "I can't believe that abomination was ever in style... Wait, I thought Inga was still on the far side of the Galaxy."

"She is. She must be using that Pilots' Federation super-secret FTL communications technology I've heard about."

"Believe me, Roshni, if the PF had that kind of technology, we'd find better uses for it than video games and remote operating people's turrets. That's just a rumor used to trick gullible fools into paying less scrupulous Commanders multiple times."

Inga (offscreen): ... and that's why you should rely on your own research and knowledge.
Beth (still looking offscreen): But this is going to take fore-... wait, I thought Commander Stevenson was still on the far side of the Galaxy?
Gyeong Castro (offscreen): She is, but she prepared a FAQ for you, and we have her voice imprint which we can input into a synthesizer. Now don't sweat the details, and just read what you're supposed to. This is live, after all.
Beth (still looking offscreen): It's what?
Gyeong (offscreen): Live.
Beth (turning to look at the camera, reading woodenly): Hello! This is Commander Beth Johanson, for Stevenson Whirlwind Adventure News, coming to you live from the Printworks, in the Millese System. The Buckyball Racing Club and Sagittarius Eye are proud to present: Hot Off the Press, a race reflecting the finest traditions of photojournalism. However, because I dallied to long... HEY! I didn't dally all that long! You kept giving me more work!
Gyeong (offscreen): You did enough exploration to reach the rank of Pathfinder.

Beth (glaring offscreen): I was looking for materials to do a little bit of engineering! Which I didn't have, because you kept on giving me work!
Gyeong (offscreen): Just finish reading what you're supposed to.
Beth (sighing, before turning back to the camera): But here at Stevenson Whirlwind Adventures, we don't strive to do the bare minimum. We want to be the very best, like no one ever was... you're having me quote Pokemon? You do realize that this franchise has existed for over 1300 years, and the protagonist is still only ten years old, right?
Gyeong (offscreen): It seemed appropriate. Hurry up and finish, you have a lot of work ahead of you.
Beth (shoulder's sagging, to the camera): Anyways, I'm going to try for a complete collection. Which is going to take forever! Stay tuned to SWAN for further details. We return you to 'Gone in Sixty Seconds,' which was paused during this announcement.
In real life, I worked extra on Saturday, Sunday was too busy to anything, and Monday night I had just enough time to get Beth to Farseers to unlock her, and from there to Millese. Since I can't have the poor girl just sitting around doing nothing, I couldn't resist having Gyeong Castro being a literal slave driver. :D

Quick scoreboard update ...

bcb1Smi.png

Cmdr punkydrummer01 has managed to squeeze two items into a single screenshot and, with better refueling tactics, shave 4 minutes off his time thereby leapfrogging Nickweb85 and Edelgard von Rhein into 4th place. Nice going! (y)

Meanwhile, a commander who shall remain nameless turned in a pretty decent sub-20min time but alas misread the rules and photographed all the objects from one category rather than one object from each category. I believe for this race in particular the old adage "less haste more speed" might be appropriate!

b) I'm noting down people's chosen category choices in a little table with choices flagged as A, B or C. At this point only Twospoons77 and Azzie Elbub have made exactly the same choices. For better or worse nobody has yet to spell out ABACAB!

I tempted to sumbit a run just to spell ABACAB
That would be a Capital Ship, Station, Thargoid, A black Hole, Shipwreck and SRV

You know that it's really hard to spell anything naughty with just those three letters, right? My creativity is being stifled over here!

I was hoping to make a prep run last night, to get a (slow) time on the board and be ready for a faster follow-on, but yesterday evening was a washout (literally - got soaked walking for a takeaway with my wife).

Hope to have time tonight. I think I know how @Numerlor's achieving such a low time, but doubt that I'll be able to match it, certainly not in my initial prep run, which is likely to be 30-60 minutes (or more - I might get carried away  - not as far as Crotalus though :ROFLMAO:).

Anyway, this is a great race idea Alec, I'm looking forward to making some runs. Proper intent to race:

CMDR Raiko
The Nomad (Asp-X) - One or two prep runs.
Spirit of Icarus (iCourier) - Later runs.

If I can get away with a shorter jump range, I'd really like give my Viper III Stormrider a go instead, but I'm expecting to need the range.

Day 5 scoreboard 1.

No less than 5 new entries today! First off Cmdr Azzie Elbub is back in Scaramamba, shaving a good 10 minutes off his run despite sticking to his previous waypoint selection to end up in 5th place with a time somewhere around the 22 minute mark. Nice flying!

Next we have the return of Cmdr OrangePheonix with a new ship (a DBX named The Jacobite Scout) and a new route (it seems he's cottoned on to Numerlor's little stunt despite not quite following the same set of waypoints). Shaving 10 minutes off his already excellent previous time, he's now solidly in second place with a run around the 10 minute region.

Then the current champion Numerlor returns, chipping away at his already stunning time with the same ship and same route to further secure his pole position - finishing in something over 6 minutes!

Buckyball regular Cmdr Bruski rolls in next with his first attempt at the race flying an Imperial Courier called Varangian Lightning and following the same set of waypoints as Nickweb85's Slippery Sausage. Despite not yet learning the secret of Numerlor's "black magic" he's still managed to jump straight into 3rd place with a fantastic time in the region of 13 minutes.

And lastly another returning member of the Buckyball squadron - Cmdr Stern Winter has arrived in his DBX, the "Frozen Cricket". Chosing to put aside the small matter of winning for the moment, he's taken up the "Genesis" challenge and turned in our first ABACAB run with a time around 46 minutes. Bravo sir - I totally salute this endeavour! To quote the song - "Yeah, there's a [black] hole in there somewhere".

o7 commanders - the press has never been so hot!

Good morning! Beth Johanson here, roving reporter for Stevenson Whirlwind Adventure News. And now, yesterday's highlights.

First up:

PIRATE ATTACK IN LHS 3117

In an event that pretty much happens every single day wherever someone's trying to do a bit of mining, which makes me wonder exactly how many pirates are out there, pirates raid a resource site in the B-Ring system of LHS 3117 Two. Here is video of the brutal destruction (at 0:20) of pirate Alan Turing at the hands of the Federation's security forces, after they chased him away from miner Liam Spiteri, who nonchalantly returned to mining (1:18), obviously enured to such destruction. Also, a huge shoutout to Buckyballer @punkydrummer01.

Next up:

YOU ARE ALL CRAZY IF YOU THINK THIS IS FUN

At least, that is what I thought as I stared down the yawning abyss. Turns out that hurtling your SRV into deep chasms can be quite the thrill.

Anyways, my SRV managed to survive the plummet, which allowed to take a picture of one of the numerous fumeroles below.

I may have also lingered quite a while to gather up all the minerals I could find. I need the mats, dang it! Ms. Castro wouldn't give me much time to get some for my own use!

Next up:

STATION REBUILDS AFTER THARGOID ATTACK

Moskowitz Gateway suffered a brutal attack by the Thargoids recently, and is still currently under repair. While many of its systems are still offline, this reporter can assure you that its security services are NOT. As can be seen in the shot below, environmental systems were given a lower priority, so there is still quite a bit of smoke inside the docking cylinder. My apologies about the whole "forgot to request permission to dock" thing. No hard feelings, right?

Finally:

PROTESTER STILL PROTESTS OVER INRA ATTROCITIES

At Hollis Gateway in the Hermitage system, a single protester, sign in hand, maintains their lonely vigil, to ensure that the atrocities committed by INRA are never forgotten. When asked for a statement, Daydream Crystal Peacequest had this to say:

"It is imperative that Humanity should never forget what happened in this base. Do you have any idea how many safety violations this has? 47, that's how many! It doesn't matter if this was a secret base, worker safety should always come first!"

When this reporter asked him about the Thargoids, he replied, "They started this war hundreds of years ago, and Humanity has every right to use whatever means they have at their disposal to wipe out those [censored]. Humanity First!!!"

Mental note: turn off night vision before taking a screen shot...

Anyway, that was the highlights. And now, the current tally:
