Welp, I have read a lot of this, just cus I had nothing better to do,...
There are two things that I think are possible, one over the other.
Either:
A. FDev doesn't care much about Elite these days, and so letting it get run into the ground,
or
B. We are being treated to the B Team in terms of maintenance of basically an 'out of date' version of the game.
A is obvious and a meaningless conversation, because if true, no conversation matters, just truckloads of salt til the lights go out.
B is more interesting....
For the past few years, it seems like Fdev is more 'distracted' away from Elite then they ever have been. I started playing just as 2.4 was coming out and the game felt very active and a lot of fast paced development. However, as we got further and further on, the past 2 years have felt, hollow. At first, Fdev had all kinds of feedback request posts, betas, more interaction with us, now, they feel distant, aloof, distracted.
Now they just feel like more: "here's what you get, see you next time", tons of bugs go un-checked, and a very limited feature set is being made.
So, my theory is, and I really do hope this is more likely to be true, (here's hoping...) that the December 2020 release will be the thing they've been working on, and that it contains a LOT of new stuff, Atmos at least, maybe at least in-ship space legs, etc and LOTS more.
It's self explanatory that if they went to add space legs, they would need content for that. Ship Interiors, Places on the station to visit, things to do when we get out of our ship on planets, both airless and planets. That's a LOT of integrated content. You couldn't really do one part of it without needing the rest, otherwise it would fall flat. That might take a good long while, (4 years?, from 2016 to 2020?, the point where they started getting distracted to the point where they say we will get major new content?)
That's the work the A Team is working on, and why they don't seem to care about this version of the game as much, because it will be replaced. That's where most of the Devs are at, and why they seem to have lost interest in fixing this build, it's old, and they are likely able to see parts of the cool new stuff in the new version starting to take shape and are getting excited and frustrated they can't tell us anything until they are done. (See No Man's Sky when you break that rule.)
That's my hope anyway, because, otherwise, I am really concerned about the future of Elite if it isn't. Sorry for the long post, Board I guess and too much time to think.
