Patch Notes September Update - Downtime and Patch Notes

There is a difference testing software in the test environment and in the live environment. Bugs that don't appear in the test environment can occasionally show up in the live environment.
like the dolphin heat bug and lack of small seismic charges.... one day... oonnne glorious day...

Deploy it to the active servers, test it to make sure it all went across ok, check the galaxy didn't implode/commanders aren't stuck inside planets due to the orbits moving along since it went offline, do a server "tick" and then sanity check all the commander accounts ported ok with all their historical skins/paintjobs/costumes/glasses/tattoos, test the new features in a "live" environment, buy some arx, test the store interaction with the live servers - yup - lots to do and we'd all rather that they took their time!

All stuff that has to be done AFTER the new version is deployed to servers....

Probs found a couple more to insert

Hope we get skimmer rain bug back.

Testing today? Really? what about testing it for weeks on end before the release? Oh wait, that's what beta testing was for...

Not totally daft, i am aware of how these things work. That being said, if there had been a proper beta, some of the guaranteed bugs that will appear as they have been since betas stopped happening, wouldn't be so abundant, which i can guarantee they will be. FD are notoriously bad at testing these days

Are you assuming they actually read what we report in the Beta tests?

damm those time zones k ill try again

8:00 AM (UTC) for approximately 9 hours so 5 pm aka 17.00 Utc ok got 1,5

thats 19,00 Germany + 1.5h so mabe 20.30 German Time
21:30 here in Greece. I was not very optimistic for today, anyway. As long as there are not (m)any bugs in the release, I'm happy
:)

I would tend to suspect that today's testing is about verifying that the deployment went as expected, and checking that all the various moving parts are working together correctly. There would be little point in testing code features today anyway, as it's unlikely they could or would make patches and build a new release on the fly during the downtime.

If you're feeling optimistic, one might also suppose they're stress-testing a bit in an effort to mitigate the traditional "nine hours of connection failures" phase that comes after a new release goes live.

Although I don't want to, I agree with you. Let's hope this time it's different!

I'd love it if they actually fix the bugs in the Galaxy and system maps when using VR. For example, I once a system is selected in Galaxy map, I have to scroll off and back on to get the context menu to pop up.

Also, the bug of gear and scoop light not updating also applies in the T9.

Welp, I have read a lot of this, just cus I had nothing better to do,...

There are two things that I think are possible, one over the other.

Either:
A. FDev doesn't care much about Elite these days, and so letting it get run into the ground,
or
B. We are being treated to the B Team in terms of maintenance of basically an 'out of date' version of the game.

A is obvious and a meaningless conversation, because if true, no conversation matters, just truckloads of salt til the lights go out.
B is more interesting....

For the past few years, it seems like Fdev is more 'distracted' away from Elite then they ever have been. I started playing just as 2.4 was coming out and the game felt very active and a lot of fast paced development. However, as we got further and further on, the past 2 years have felt, hollow. At first, Fdev had all kinds of feedback request posts, betas, more interaction with us, now, they feel distant, aloof, distracted.

Now they just feel like more: "here's what you get, see you next time", tons of bugs go un-checked, and a very limited feature set is being made.

So, my theory is, and I really do hope this is more likely to be true, (here's hoping...) that the December 2020 release will be the thing they've been working on, and that it contains a LOT of new stuff, Atmos at least, maybe at least in-ship space legs, etc and LOTS more.

It's self explanatory that if they went to add space legs, they would need content for that. Ship Interiors, Places on the station to visit, things to do when we get out of our ship on planets, both airless and planets. That's a LOT of integrated content. You couldn't really do one part of it without needing the rest, otherwise it would fall flat. That might take a good long while, (4 years?, from 2016 to 2020?, the point where they started getting distracted to the point where they say we will get major new content?)

That's the work the A Team is working on, and why they don't seem to care about this version of the game as much, because it will be replaced. That's where most of the Devs are at, and why they seem to have lost interest in fixing this build, it's old, and they are likely able to see parts of the cool new stuff in the new version starting to take shape and are getting excited and frustrated they can't tell us anything until they are done. (See No Man's Sky when you break that rule.)

That's my hope anyway, because, otherwise, I am really concerned about the future of Elite if it isn't. Sorry for the long post, Board I guess and too much time to think.
