Celebrating 35 years of Elite!

My favourite memory... it's between playing Elite on my C64 and Frontier on my Amiga... because those games actually worked.
Somehow I doubt I need to add my commander name for this one.

The most memorable for me was the Woah! and feeling of impending doom on my first hyperdiction. I really thought OMG what on earth is going on while mashing buttons on my PS4 controller, panicking!

Greetings Commanders,

Well I did start playing in 1984 on a very old system which I build myself. I think my original Commander name was The one but can't really remember. I would love to find out though.
After a very long period I'm back since December 2018, as Nefarious13.
I can honestly say its been brilliant and I've never loved gaming so much and even at a much more senior age, I'm addicted.

May the Elite community continue to grow and evolve.

Into the black and fly save Cmdr's o7....

For me is has to be when I started playing 35 years ago. This was a time when 2 dimensional platform games were about as sophisticated as it got. Then suddenly Elite came along and you realised you could go anywhere, unrestricted by a preset story and create your own adventure. It was mind blowing, the first its kind, I'll never forget it.

Commander Le Frere du Dan Ham here.

My favourite memory of playing Elite was last week, stuck in an airport. It turned a crap time, with no where to go, into an exploration of the universe. Thanks Frontier, that day would have really sucked without you.

CMDR DragonIV.

Late comer to Elite, only having played Elite Dangerous. I got my space legs (tee hee) playing the Wing Commander and X-Wing games as a young man, so I was already loving the genre.

Favorite Elite memory was my first day in premium beta back in 2014. I was starved for space sims, hadn't been a proper new one in what, a decade? I hopped into my Sidewinder and was gobsmacked. I could not get over how good it looked, how good it felt to be flying again, and the feeling I was never going to play any other game for the rest of my days.

Infatuation never lasts, but I still play the game all this time later because I really like flying spaceships.

Cmdr Nwah here
Favorite memory was about 15 years ago back in F:E2 (I didn't even own a computer back in '93). I was starting to seriously grow an interest in all space things (beyond my childhood fascination for Star Wars and such) and the science behind it all.
After reading up on newtonian mechanics and astrodynamics, I quickly realized, the things I was learning could, in fact, be applied to that weird DOS game I had been playing lately. So I kept at it, I read some more, and even did some math! Me, who had always caused such dismay for my maths and science teachers as a kid!
And eventually, using the crude tools offered by the game, I figured out how to get my lovely Imperial Courier in a stable orbit. It was certainly a crudely eccentric orbit, but I was damn proud. I had used math and science to learn to do something I enjoyed, and more importantly I figured I could, in fact, use my brain that way, if I just decided to.

Ah, my first Panther Clipper with a 50MW (I think) plasma accelerator. Or landing on Birminghamworld in Barnards Star in Frontier. That was cool. Actually, I really liked the dome cities on Merlin in Ross 154... So many to pick.

The first memory that came into my head when I read this was of playing the original Elite on my C64 and loving it.

My favourite moment was the punch of adrenaline my chest when I docked at a space-station and suddenly got interrupted by a mission. It turned out in due course, that a "Some eson beetle headed flap ear'd knave new ship" had been seen and I was sent after it. I didn't know the Shakespearian origin of that descriptive till years later, but I headed out into space.

The feeling of elation when I finally beat the down was like nothing I had ever experienced, soon relived by escaping the clutches of those pesky Thargoids in witchspace... I also grew to love the attention of the local militia, occasionally shooting a space-station just to snipe the poor so and sos as they popped out of the mailbox.

I spent literally years playing Elite 2 Frontiers and have been playing E: D since launch, with great affection. It gets better all the time.

o7 FD Team :)

Don't really care for the freebies, just want to share memories...

When I first tried Elite on the Atari ST, I was amazed... here was a different kind of game. The possibilities were enormous and I never grew tired of playing it. I still play the first elite occasionally!!

Fondest memory? When I destroyed the first Thargoid ship... they were tough bast****. :)

My two fondest memories playing Elite both happened when I joined my fellow Commanders on the Autumn Odyssey Expedition 2018. I actually got to become part of our Logo, that we produced against the background of a Wolf Rayet Star - you can see my black and green Anaconda all to the bottom left here.

The second event I will always remember was our visit to "Planet of death", where I got to get all close up and personal with a white dwarf, sitting comfortably on a planet just 2 light seconds away from the white dwarf as we rushed through its perihelion at a breathtaking pace. Brown alert is what I call that feeling, when you feel like you will hit the star any moment now, along with all the planet you're sitting on. :D

I would like to extend my gratitude to the organizers that made Autumn Odyssey possible, and of course to the Frontier team for providing the basis for all this exciting living room astronomy I've been hooked to since 1996!

Happy 35 here's to many many more
Its hard to pinpoint my favorite memory the game is huge but the first time I flew up on a Thargoid site completely blew my mind I was playing on ps4 then was looking for pois one of my favorite things to do fly around and pick up free cargo or find a crashed ship or satellite any I was flying and looking when I saw some green looked like engine trails of a ship I flew closer and this strange site came to view you have no idea how hard this old mans heart was beating the detail and those spooky ass sounds told my coworkers about it for days lol.
but the one that sticks out the most is when I did my first rescue mission In the witch head after the thargoids attacked Hanna I was in a unengineered Krait phantom I could only Fit 30 people on board the thrill of going into that station on fire buzzers and warning light things blowing up I finally touched down load up and headed out lifted off got about 5 meters off the deck an explosion threw my ship into the wall of the station my ship started screaming taking damage I was stuck losing shields could not move sadly I and 30 passengers died that day and that memory of how dangerous it is out here will be with me forever thank you o7 fly safe

As a kid, sitting watching my Da playing the original (Still have it!), oohing and ahhing, explaining as we pottered along. Then comes the 90s, and Frontier.. my time to shine. Many a night spent flying, my moody teens phase, lost in the stars. Great times.

My favorite moment of playing elite was when I was 8 years old, and I was the co-pilot of my brother playing classic elite on commodore 64. He flew the ship while I handled the weapons, ECM and ...was there anything else? CMDR ZSoros here (with my brother CMDR StevenJC).

I remember playing the original game on a BBC model B. After many hours of playing I got my rank up to either Deadly or Dangerous (can't remember which) at which point my tape player mangled my game save so I had to start again.
