I'm stoked for the "VFR is possible everywhere" claim that the developers have made. As a VFR pilot myself that's awesome. The accurate terrain and weather effects are enough to sell me on this product for sure.

I'll definitely have to upgrade my old rig to run this, though. Thankfully I have decent internet connectivity, but I'll need more horsepower under the hood. I haven't upgraded my core system in years. lol.

What does VFR stand for?

What does VFR stand for?

Visual Flight Rules.

Basically means that a pilot is flying by outside reference to avoid obstacles and other aircraft. You need clear weather to fly VFR. IFR (Instrument Flight Rule) in contrast means the pilot is relying primarily on instrumentation (and flight control) for obstacle and aircraft avoidance. Weather & visibility can be poor as the pilot is not relying on ground reference.

Here's a pre-alpha demo:

Thats an incredible video and rendering of an atmospheric world :) Proves it can be done - Frontier should definitely take note... I may be getting this :)
Imagine what would all those people who are (still!) whining about Elite being "always online" say if Frontier announced that the game will be computed on an AI cloud from now on. ;)
There are people even now boycotting Microsoft because they "want to play THEIR games on THEIR computers"

I mean, the technology of the new Flight Simulator is trully fascinating and I'm a big fan, actually, which is surprising, considering how much I hate "games as service" in general, but there will always be people who will want to play offline or at least have semblance of owning their game. They are less prominent in FS community, I guess, than they are elsewhere, but still, this is not something Fdev are going to pull off.

One does wonder how many ARX per week it would take to compete with this. :)

But I do distinctly recall hearing several times in the video that it was possible to play in an offline mode, no connection required! With limitations on scenery loading, obviously, but nonetheless, a genuine offline mode. Maybe Frontier could learn from that bit as well :D ;) :)

You would be playing using cached graphics, at a lower LOD. Still OK for me.

Is it still 3 statute miles, clear of clouds? Been a long time...

According to the devs there will be options to play MSFS 'offline'. You can have cached terrain, or perhaps just the basemap equivalent.

Can you do stunts in a Cessna?

Sure. Not a good idea though. ;) Cessna 150 and 172 fuel tanks are gravity fed so I don't think doing any 'unusual attitude' maneuvers that put the engine above the tanks is advisable. That's all I've flown, so I have no experience with true 'stunt' aircraft. The only thing I've done that may qualify is getting into a spin after stalling. Frankly that was enough! :)

In all honestly it's been awhile for me, too. I don't fly anymore (much as I'd like to).

According to Fdev pre-beta, Elite was playable offline as well. :p
Plans change and MS could just as well find out that a game that is designed with cloud in mind from the get go is REALLY hard to convince to running offline well enough. Just sayin'...

But yeah. I imagine they are thinking of letting us download a certain area (or flight path corridor) and play within that area offline, which I think is doable but also a bit inconvenient, especially if it means dowloading several GB of maps prior to "going offline", every time. Because there is no way they will let us store any significant portion of the map locally. How much did they say is the whole Earth? 2 petabytes?
