[Video] Open letter from community to Elite Dangerous

I'm not even sure that is true - I've got things fixed in the game by contacting CM people on Discord / Twitter - as long as you have a specific problem then they are actually very easy to contact, and often get things sorted. But what some (including the OP on this thread) want is an ongoing open ended chat about 'stuff', and 'the future'. And few companies have time for that.
You even get things fixed by communicating on this forum :sneaky:

I will not be told by you or anyone else how to feel or think about gaming, thank you. I respectfully ask you to cease trying.

That's an odd thing to say in thread about an influencers petition you say you support.

I think we can all agree that that sort of behaviour is awful and has no place in society let alone gaming. But I don't understand the relevence to this letter? Have any of the signatories made any comments like this?

I clarified twice in my post it wasn't directed at you precisely to avoid you trying to reframe it as an attack. Its general commentary on the shift in communications.

However the petition with its "or else" factor definitely fits, and that reddit thread isn't exactly short on further examples.

Its absolutely on point, video games are optional entertainment if it stops being fun you should stop doing it. Any other approach is doing it wrong. There's no such thing as the one game to rule them all variety is the spice of life and all that.

The reason they were willing to talk to you is that you are capable of communication. However there's a tiny subset of gamers who (unlike you) are actively driving devs away from communicating with players.

Have a look at this, its more extreme than anything we see here (thanks to the forums policies and the mods) but it explains a lot :

Read that before, its certainly scary to think about.

This part:

“Abuse is the cost of doing business.” It seems particularly sad when you put it like that. One thing I’ve noticed recently is that when developers raise these issues in public spaces, they often receive a response that implies that they’ve earned the flood of hatred. That something they have done deserves such a vitriolic response.

The funny thing is (if it can be called funny) is how on every forum its only those devs who are so bad, its only those devs who are lazy and incompetent, and its impled that so many other devs are better. But all it usually takes is a cursory dig through other devs forums to see the same sorts of comments there.

I understand its not what most people who support the petition are like, but again, it doesn't take much of a browse through the comments to see GIFT'ed individuals making posts, although the more extreme ones will be getting removed.

Then start your own petition, let your voice be heard. Free speech is a wonderful thing.

FWIW I didn't sign the petition, since I didn't agree with it's tone and some of its points. However I do think that FD's communication could be improved and that there is an issue with long standing bug and balance issues within the game. If someone were to make a petition or poll to gauge interest in those issues I might sign, but I don't feel strongly enough to start one myself TBH.

Launching into hyperbole and insinuation just seems...trite or disingenuous IMO.

Maybe it's because I see some much of this in today's UK politics that it kinda annoys me more i guess.

A petition to not listen to the other petition? Umm...

Lol....this aint no family "bubba". This is the entertainment business. Plain and simple. They make games to make money. Anything else is gravy. I promise you that as long as the euros and benjamins are coming in, they aint losing one minute of sleep over these grievances. Im not saying thats wrong or right. Its just business. You dont like the service then stop paying for it. Otherwise they will just smile and give excuses and put out the same old product, bugs and all. This has played out many times before in companies too numerous to count. This is business.
You are not wrong, but whenever I had an issue I did send Brett a PM and he responded within 24 hours. Frontier didn't make any money with that.

And i would call that good business. I spoke with Brett several times myself. I also bought paint jobs and such afterwards. See the connection? It works both ways my friend. If people stopped financing companies who dont practice good customer service...they will change.

As i look across the gaming world, i see many developers and publsihers doing some pretty shady stuff. Loot boxes come to mind. People jump up and down and holler....but companies lime EA keep doing it. Why? Because players keeping buying their stuff! I quit buying ea proudcts long ago. Its the only thing that most understand.

PS:
If someone doesn't believe me regarding death threats and personal attacks against the devs, this is what a mod posted on reddit:

'double edit: I can't believe I have to even say this, but sending frontier employees personal attacks and death threats is super uncool and will get you an immediate ban from this community. Make your criticism as pointed and as loud as you want, but attack the problems you have, not the people.'

PS
Of course you can't blame the initiators of the petition for their company.

They have an agenda I just posted a direct link to it.

It's a video game. Do some research and buy the ones you'll like (that's the entire modes argument sorted out), if you burn out after 3000+ hours move on to something else or take a break for a bit. You can always reinstall, or not.

Trying to force the devs to comply is the wrong approach and actively reduces dev communication which seems to be one of the issues bothering people.

Couple of thoughts on this:

A) 'It's a video game.' is a poor argument I often hear. The hours of investment and the strong emotional ties created by games are important to us all I think (otherwise why are we here talking about this)? Elite might take place in an imaginary world, but the emotions/connections/time spent on it are very real, and using terms like 'its just a game' invalidates that.
A) Haven't followed all of Zac's twitter (as I don't generally use that horrible platform), but if a creator wants to remove a tool he's created 'in protest' - that's entirely their right. Yes, it sucks, but if they feel that strongly about how things are going, its their tool, their choice. Obviously, that is not a light decision for someone to make, but I respect at least that they are at the point of making it.

True, but I'd say that's universal. Someone could claim that the only reason you are nice to your wife is because it's beneficial for you... ;)

Of course you can't blame the initiators of the petition for their company, but guys like Stuart etc. know pretty damn well that it would attract those individuals.

Good on them for the perma bans.
