[Video] Open letter from community to Elite Dangerous

All valid points. But aren't these issues rather old? Apologies if I am wrong about that, I am not an expert on the PP side of things like you are. Regarding communications I would judge them by their current standard and to me it seems like it was excellent in 2019 (obviously not on PP though). It seems like an odd timing to demand better communication when they are doing a good job.

These are old, but they were part of the first mortal blow for PP numbers which were declining because of onerous PP mechanics (like merit decay and allocations which should have been looked at really in 1.4). This is in addition to Cycle 52, and escalating 5C to the point large power groups quit and you have zombie powers left behind, and no organized play going on any longer. With no high level organisation or desire PP simple ceases to be anything and PP is then truly dead.

FD are excellent at communicating when they have stuff to show- but when stuff goes wrong on old features you really have to stick the point in for them to take notice. Recently, two cycles did not tick- I made a polite jab at FD to look at it, and had no reply or acknowledgement something was wrong. It happened again the next week, and I was less polite about it. Paige was kind enough to reply that time, but it just hammers home that if you sit on your hands and wait patiently FD will assume all is well.

All I can tell you is I left this game a long time ago due to the lack of progress in PP and FDev false promises. Of the 18 accounts I knew of through personal friends and family, none play now.
People, it is 5 years on, FDev have not, and will not learn from the sordid past or change company culture.
At what point does optimism become insanity?
The community has always existed despite, and not because of Frontier - but you can only string people along for so long.
I still wish you all well though and admire your dedication and tenacity in the face of abject company indifference.

It's also IRL money :)
Which is being spent on entertainment, ergo a gamble on achieving a sense of pleasure and of no substantive worth. If players want more certainty in that type of transaction, then there are legally obtainable substances that can be bought and used for similar, but guaranteed effects. However, there may be side affects and the feeling won't be permanent.

Of course, because it's a very valid argument. If people who are able to make correct observations are called apologists, so be it. So far name calling never made an argument invalid.

It's a fact that the forum went into silly places (well, more silly than the standard silliness) when they announced that fleet carriers get delayed. If we can't accept that plans can change they can't tell us about their plans, it's that simple. Everyone who was able to accept the delay was called an apologist, white knight and fanboy. So I guess we shouldn't blame Frontier but ourselves for the lack of communication.
Ok cool.

Probably noped out after the death threats started.
Jesus...Where there really death threats?

The irony is that some of the old timers over there say that the forums are the more toxic community. As someone who reads and posts in both places, lmao. Reddit is a comparative cesspool.

No wonder nobody wants to communicate with us.

Considering PP is in the game and functional(all be it not to your liking in certain areas)why do you feel this should take priority over other elements of the game. Your idea of the perfect Elite game is different from mine.
Shouldn’t FD just make the game they want to make and effectively remove the dilemma. It’s precisely what every other games developer does.

It is in the game and is a headline feature of 1.3. Don't you think headline features should have at least something added to them as time goes on? Its been in since 2015, and has no significant gameplay added to in the years between. If its so perfect, why is it the general perception of it so poor? Why was it, the devs forgot to mention collapse (one of the pillars of its gameplay) was missing, despite telling us it was in? Why is it, in a feature that relies on large groups of players FD have been so slow to stamp out 5C which just grinds legitimate players into the dirt, putting people off and sending it into a decline? Surely such a social feature requires the dev to keep it attractive?

Don't forget the proposal Sandro posted is ten items, with no new assets, a few menu swaps and its mainly changing formulas and rules? How is that minuscule offering disrupting any other update exactly? You've had multiple helpings of C + P, exploration, mining, fleet carriers, squadrons, new BGS, moon landings, map upgrades, nav upgrades, UI upgrades, market upgrades, engineering twice over....how long should you wait for such a major feature to see something as well?

So by that logic, you shove out any old toss and when its found to be wanting, you just ¯\(ツ)and excuse incredibly poor design because 'its my vision'.

Does this game have serious design flaws? Yes. Is this game a bug ridden mess sometimes? Yes. Do we all want to see it fixed? Yes. Do all of us agree with this strong-arm open letter tactic in which the "community" threatens to take action like boycott the game or "influencers" refusing to make more content or (lol) people threatening legal action ? Nope.

If there is one term I absolutely loathe of recent it's "influencers". "I'm important. I make YouTube videos about _. I'm now an expert on it and everything around it. Listen to me!!!!!!". Sorry, had to blurt that out. The inflated heads on some of these tubers is stunning.

Well done. Its important to know your own preferences when choosing which video games to buy. Hopefully this has acted as a learning experience for you and in future you will be able to make a more informed choice.

Good luck with your next purchase.

The problem with the petition was that it lumped too many things together. Roadmap content disclosure is a key part of commercial marketing strategy and is totally down to FD. Yes, there are long-standing bugs etc that many players feel should have been fixed by now, but priority of unfixed bugs is also FD’s bag, they’ll assign maintenance effort wherever they see most benefit. If management screw up that sort of thing they’ll lose money and we might not have a game at all. Some bug fixes might require a full update depending on the extent of their impact on the bgs and the rest of the game. I also expect much of FD’s development effort is currently focussed on next year’s update.

I don’t personally like the idea of Arx, but then I’ve bought all the colour schemes etc that I currently want and am unlikely to get anything else in the near future. I don’t like PowerPlay, or rather I’ve never been sufficiently interested to try it. So I don’t, my decision.

I think most people at FD love the game as much as the playerbase, but they have different priorities defined by commercial pressures. All the ranting and vitriol etc we’ve seen cannot change that, it will just annoy them.

What I would like to see is the reintroduction of beta testing before all releases, major and minor. To me that was the key point of the petition & it got lost: The player base love the game and want to help FD make it better. Reintroduction of Beta testing on minor releases could contribute to that significantly. It would improve release stability & avoid a lot of the recent problems. It would be pretty easy to do (I say in my naivety about the constraints that FD have); just set up a test server, with a small area of the galaxy (1000ly diameter?) containing all manner of stellar objects & open it to a small number (1000?) of trusted experienced players who try hard for a couple of weeks to break it, with appropriate bug reporting (& fixes). NDAs might be applied if necessary to avoid premature disclosure of any new features, though this hasn’t been necessary to date. This would allow FD to hold back the release if it wasn’t up to standard ; I believe most players would welcome a release delay if it resulted in an update that was significantly better quality.

You talk of years of frustration and an exhaustion of goodwill, I talk about enjoying the game as it is whilst looking forward to funky new stuff.

One of us is clearly doing it wrong.
I have previously politely asked you to not gatekeep the experience of playing Elite. I'm happy for you that you love Elite as it is, genuinely. I largely love Elite as it is (when it works - being primarily a bgs player, the broken mission boards have this challenging as of late) but I think it could be better. My experience is different from yours. This does not make me "wrong" and you "correct" and I do not appreciate your condescension. I ask you again to please stop.

Actually I think we aren't entitled to anything and I am happy when we get something.

Lol. Gatekeeping. Is that like griefing?
