When ships turn bad :D

DBX. Don't know why, but I just wasn't feeling it. Did a little exploration trip in it and disliked every minute of it. Got rid of it at the first station I came about.

How strange, I love flying my DBX but when I tried the AspE just never felt comfortable in it. I still have the E, but haven't quite worked out what role I will give it. The DBX has been relegated to the fleet's taxi and the exploration role taken by the Krait Phantom (which I love flying).

I know the AspE is one of the most popular ships in the game, maybe I bought it too late but it just didn't do it for me !

A little off topic but I really like bounty hunting in my Viper IV but in VR the landing gear come up through the floorboards when retracted and it drives me crazy..IT BREAKS MAH EMMERSION!!11

I wouldn't say that is off topic, to me it would a legitimate reason to not like flying a ship. Same as a badly located window frame or seating position.

Yep, definitely applicable to the topic :D

FDL - when I first started it was supposedly the 'ducks guts', better than the Vulture. I already had a Vulture which I loved so I was excited to get an FDL. I did what you said... Coriolis dream build, mat hunting (G5s were easier to find then...) etc, took it into a Haz Res - hated it! The only thing I liked was the Huge hardpoint.

I haven't really tried anything else 'properly', being put off by the time I wasted on the FDL. I'm sticking with my Vulture and Krait - they do everything I need.

Yea, I flew an AspX before, then I bought the DBX becaue I heard good things about it but I just didn't feel "home" in it. Maybe because I had gotten used to the Asp's ginormous cockpit or something, I dunno. But I got tired of the Asp as well and been flying Kraits ever since they were released.

Although now I've equipped my Type-10 as an exploration ship

Just a quick thank you for all the responses - it's been great reading.

One thing that does come out of this is that there isn't one universally disliked or hated ship. I think that bodes well for the design of the game as it also shows there isn't that one ship that everyone has because it is a game winner. Guess the closest is probably the Python but even that ship isn't vital to own to succeed in the game. Yeah I do like everyone has their own preferences and (so far at least) no one has decided to come down on someone for liking or not liking a certain ship.

Well done Commanders, I thank you.

Agreed, everyone has been chipping in personal viewpoints rather than judgement.

Sadly, now I have to try the Adder in VR.... (I like hearing other folk mention things I may not have considered)

I've never just outright immediately sold a ship after buying and flying it once. Instead I've tried to make the ship better with engineering, and usually succeeded enough to want to keep the ship.

Except the T10. I engineered the crud out of mine. I flew it for weeks. Then I abandoned it and it sat in the hangar for months and months. Finally, I sold it, just to get it out of my way. lol.

The only ship I bought and sold in 1 jump was my first Beluga, I wasn't 'gud' enough as a pilot then...
Now I love the ship and it gets some good use sneaking in and out of stations carrying the 'socially misunderstood' passengers law-abiding tour operators won't carry :)

Okay, to expand this great discussion a bit further:

Is there a ship that you would not even contemplate purchasing? No matter how good others praise it, how seemingly perfect it is, you just would not/can not bring yourself to drop a few credits for it?

The Dolphin and the Ferdy. Dont like them. Won’t waste my time on them.

Back to the other question. When I went from the Aspx to a Dbx, I didn’t like the Dbx at first. Sold it quickly. For some reason I gave it another shot and now it’s my favorite explorer/taxi. I have a phantom built for exploring but for some reason I always go back to by Dbx.

Bought a beluga, blew it up 4 times in a row trying to leave a station. Sold it in the same station.

The Type-10 Defender is the most disappointed I have ever been in a ship in Elite. It looks AWESOME and I want to like and use it so much, but the supercruise handling, the horrible hardpoint placement, and the crappy shields are just too much. Both my Cutter and Anaconda are a heck of a lot better. Especially the Cutter.

The mamba , on paper it should be my dream ship ... fast and stuffed with big guns but for some reason me and the mamba just dont get along , i engineered it and flew a few CZ's to get the feel but nope it got mothballed shortly after. For my day to day i still love the courier and for light shenanigans the vulture still holds a candle to my heart (vulture was my first love in ED)... i even built a 2nd courier with the new engineering and quickly learned just how bad my rolls on the previous system actually were , so much so that this new courier is better protected and 100m/s faster than my old build.

Next session i think i'll re engineer a 2nd vulture to see how they compare.

I don't know if I am the only one, or this is a common experience in the game but here is my question:

Have you set your mind on a specific ship, probably even did the cyber build in Coriolis, might have even done some mat hunting for the inevitable engineering only to find out you really don't like flying it for some valid (to you) reason and promptly got rid of it?

For me, this has happened twice. The first was the Keelback, remember thinking this would be a perfect ship for me, still medium pad, but lots of hardpoints and a hangar bay! Thought it would be the proverbial 'ducks guts' I did. Got it, kitted it out, even did some rudimentary engineering then discovered I just didn't enjoy flying it. Every time I strapped my cyber butt to the chair, all I could think of was all the other ships I had could do whatever I was planning on doing better. Ended up selling the entire ship (including all the modules for a loss lol) just to get it out of my fleet!

The second was the Cutter, tried one out during the 3.3 Beta. Always wanted one, to me it looked like a space ship should look like. I like the concept, I liked the way I was going to outfit it, even has a paint job picked out to buy it. The plan was to fly it during the Beta then concentrate (not grind, I don't do that) on getting my rank and buying one for real. I still remember the delight when I finally clicked on the launch button and the subsequent horror and disgust when I found out if handled like doped out cow. I just couldn't understand how a Clipper could be so much fun to fly and the Cutter so damn terrible. But I persevered, flew it for the rest of the Beta and made the decision NEVER AGAIN.

So fellow Commanders, what is that ship or ships that caught your fancy and then let you down terribly?

The Vulture.

Spec'd it, built it, tested it, hated it, sold it.

About 10 months later, I found myself wondering why I didn't have one, when I had everything else, so I did it again - spec'd it, built it, tested it, enjoyed it, figured out it wasn't the ship, it was me.

Hey I had better answer my own question right :D

For me, I have no interest in the Challenger/Chieftain/Crusader group simply because I can't work out what they could do the one of my existing ships can do now. Same with the Viper and Viper Mk IV, might be nice ships but totally surplus to my requirements. If FD gave me one of each for free I would still sell them immediately, definitely not the type to hoard ships I don't use (hell I don't even hoard modules I don't have a need for lol).
