So the PS5 is announced for release in Dec 2020...conveniently around the time we would expect the next big ED update. Any word from FDev on hoe this will work? It seems like commercial prudence should dictate the future of the game has to be on next gen. Does that mean the next update will ONLY be next gen? For eg, i think ps5 it's backwards compatible so it makes sense to build a ps5 upgrade on to a ps4 game....if that makes sense. Either way will be contentious - you either leave behind current gen owners or annoy those buying next gen by delivering now obselete game design.

Top tip..

Just buy a PC.

That console will be at least 500USD/£

For that money you can buy most of a good PC and anything extra costs is paid off in the fact you only have to swap parts every few years instead of waiting for 6-10 years for the company to build another console

No Frontier will not leave current gen console players behind.

And neither will Sony or MS.
They'd be shooting themselfs in the foot if they did, imho at least 75% won't be buying the new console at release date.
If Fdev would be focussing only on next gen they'd lose the majority of the console players.

Likely backwards compatible, unlikely to leave current gen players behind.

There's already precedent for incremental improvements on games thanks to the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X, which some games have adjusted to take advantage of the better hardware. So theoretically PS5 will have better performance but still run the same game.

An oversimplified way to look at it is that console games are like PC versions, except their video settings are locked in to be optimal with the hardware. For better hardware, they can bump those settings up when using that hardware.

Did anyone manage to get the point yet?

I can't imagine the next big update for ED - which will be a payable DLC for most players - would only be for the next gen consoles? ie: Why would FD limit their sales that much?

I would suspect/hope a lot of graphical features are coming online to enhance ED's visuals to make use of the next gen consoles, and indeed current gen PCs, which are are far from being utilised in their graphic abilities at the moment IMHO by ED.

The PS5 is backwards compatible: it'll play PS4 games. This is well known, official information:

Check out this guy who thinks the following were "obsolete game design" when they released: Resident Evil 2 Remake, Halo Master Chief Collection, Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection, Borderland Handsome Collection, Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, and Shadow Of The Colossus (PS4).

After a while they should leave the old gen consoles behind. And I'm saying that as a PS4 player.

Otherwise they'll be limited by them too much (thinking about atmospheric worlds etc., that'll hopefully come one day).

edit: it's not about backwards compatibility. It's about whether ED keeps being updated for PS4 / XOne or if they say at one time, we only support PS5/NextBox from this patch onward. They should do that. There are other examples for that, like Diablo 3 for PS3 and later PS4.

I'm not buying another PC. I have a reasonably good spec one but it's for music production (i7 processor, 2tb hard drive as i have a LOT of audio files (audio recordings/field recordings/sample libraries etc). I'll probably buy a PS5 but not when it first comes out. I was just wondering if there has been any info from FDev themselves on what their plan is.

I never said they were obselete when released.....maybe Borderlands. It's pretty rotten to play in my opinion.

For atmospheric worlds next gen consoles are necessary.

All that will happen is that Frontier will turn on more (or less) graphics settings depending on the platform you are playing on. at least for the next year or so after release, at which point they will most likely have to raise their minimum requirements again for further updates.

When the 2018 paid content (widely suspected to be atmospheric planets) was put back to late 2020, when by a curious coincidence the next generation of consoles would be launching, the obvious suspicion was that it was because Frontier couldn't make the tech work on the current generation of consoles. In which case what we'll get in 2020 will not be available on the current generation of consoles, and perhaps some older PCs will also be left in the dust.

Xbox Too™

We saw upgrades for both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, so I imagine it will be the same for next-gen. It makes no sense whatsoever for Frontier to leave the original consoles behind (unless they don't like £££) - the hardware spec of those exceeds minimum PC requirements.
