Next gen consoles

My guess is the current consoles won't be supported going forward.

After certain hours of space madness, you start to pick up so many compromises frontier have made.. unexpected differences in quality.. which can only be explained by performance issues / targets for consoles. Having first hand experience even seeing the ps4 pro struggle sometimes...

Frontiers my way or the highway approach + only maintaining one version of a game or bust makes me guess this generation of consoles is gone (or left the same) next year.

Though frontier are a growing company. They're trying arx, learning new things in game design with their park builders etc, so maybe this is the first time they'll be going to school on multiple console generations + live service so see what they do.

Nah they will be supported for as long as they meet the minimum requirements for the game at least as far as the content that is already there. This is because there will be little if any change to the kind of architecture other than a (significant) upgrade to graphics and processing power.

With that in mind, for as long as the current generation consoles can meet the minimum requirements for the game & expansions, they are most likely going to be supported, I mean literally all that will happen, much like what happens between XB1 & XB1X, PS4 & PS4 Pro, is there will be different graphics profiles for different consoles.

Complete random guess.. but one of the quick hunches i got when they delayed ice planets was because of consoles.

Another guess is theres only so far you can go with shaders.. pretty sure textures and geometry start to be different for each platform and frontier (and noone?) doesnt do this.

The only console i have experience with is ps4 pro.. and it doesnt maintain 60 at 1080p on pc like quality setting. Doesn't even try 4k as the console supports in any potato mode. What does that imply?

Like stated above, they'll have to abandon the old consoles at a specific point. Was the same for Diablo III and GTA V

Both started on PS3, moved to PS4 and after a transition period, the PS3 version wasn't updated anymore. There's basically no other option, as the hardware gets too weak and the user base too small after a while.

Oh it's always going to happen eventually, I just don't see it happening until they are at a point where they have to raise the minimum specs for PC. As strange as it sounds the minimum requirements are still below the level of the OG XB1 (the OG PS4 is much higher than that). The XB1X and PS4 Pro are at least at the point of the recommended system requirements too.

With that, PS5 is confirmed to be backwards compatible too, I'm sure the same could be said for XB2 also. So if you have a PS5 you will most likely still be able to play ED on that too...

I can say this with confidence because the main difference between this generation and the next is simply power, the next generation has lots more of it. Whereas this generation and the last, there was a whole new architecture going on.

Frontier's code is definitely not optimised. Go watch Digital Foundary's video comparing console versions. Xbox one base game has like 10 or more frame than its PS4's counterpart. Both consoles have identical hardware (maybe PS4 is a little more powerful even). So I hope they improve their code with their PS5 version, if there will be any.

Back to topic: when I see the LoD in stations and I imagine how are we gonna have space legs with that low of LoD, I imagine that Current Vs Next generation difference in graphics will be huge even unbearable for me. I do not guess Frontier will ditch current gen at all unless they finally make the procedural cities and fauna etc .. which can be released around 2022 as the last update for ED. Before that, not gonna happen.

Right, but that won't delay the date the game will get abandoned on PS4 even one day. It's really just that, backwards compatibility, playing a PS4 game on a different hardware.

So devs can't utilize the higher power until they release a dedicated version for the PS5/NextBox and you won't get updates even when playing it on PS5 within the compatibility mode.
