Do "purple-haired heroes" scare everyone into Solo?

But when everyone switches from Open to Solo, then Open BECOMES Solo... So you are shoehorning me into solo play against my will
In a game where in-the-same-instance multi-player is optional (and is the choice facing the player each time they start a game session) it necessarily follows that player choice as to which game mode to play in has precedence over play-style choice of those who choose to play in multi-player.

Ya'll are lucky, seein' people in open... on xbox its a barren wasteland, even in CG systems. Shinrarta is about the only place I can encounter other people, let alone griefers. I think I've only been interdicted once, and was able to escape it. Them in a Krait II and me in my Mamba.

I guess Mambas don't attract griefers that well? I almost exclusively fly my Mamba in open, sooo...

Unless, of course, you are the reason for people switching to solo - which means you've done this to yourself. Nearly everybody remembers "that one kid" who mistreated everyone around him, that no one wanted to play with - was it everyone else's fault he was intolerable? Hmmm...

But you must admit, it's interesting to consider that Solo mode (and PG) can kill Open mode, but Open mode cannot kill Solo mode (assuming Solo mode exists). After all, if I'm the only CMDR using Solo mode, it's the same as if EVERYONE is using Solo mode, yet if I'm the only one using Open mode..... You see what I'm saying?

Doubles

War? 1v1 != War, needs more people - requires co-operation
Only on one side.

Genocide systematic destruction of one race/religion by another - requires co-operation
More general usage - the elimination of a Genus. Extinction does not require cooperation.

Golf - Need a caddy, the not only hand you your clubs but also discuss tactics...
A caddy is not required. You can carry your own clubs. You don't need to discuss strategy to play. You are only competing against yourself.

Competetive eating - someone needs to cook the food...

Depends what you're eating. Marshmallows only require the bag to be opened, and the eater can do that themselves. They can also carry their own bags to where they're going to eat.

If every player, except one, were to play in Solo then that'd mean that, far from "killing" Open, Solo would simply be the most popular game mode - and the sole player in Open would share the same experience as those in Solo. It may not be the player in Open's preferred experience, of course - however Frontier cannot guarantee that other players will want to play with any player.

The size of the galaxy vs the number of players means that meeting other players, other than in known hotspots, is somewhere between not very likely and very, very rare.

I've always been a firm believer in the idea that Open is better off without those who are capable of being discouraged from playing in Open by any action of other players that is within the bounds of the rules.

I don't feel the other modes are a threat to Open.

The ease of transition between modes can annoy those that expect people in Open to be accepting of what Open entails, but Open is it's own reward and those that really want to be there will stay there and will offer better gameplay than those that don't.

For me, it's not the actions of any player, but rather the quality of play, that keeps me away from Open.

I cannot accept ships skipping across space like stones on a pond, or being extracted from a station while trying to land and deposited back into space, as if attached by bungee cords as viable. Yet this has been my experience when joining Open play enough times for me to write it off as playable.

This is probably the most honest comment I have read from anyone on either side of the open / not open fence.

I'll swap modes as & when I feel like it, but the folk I have met in open (even the few who have tried (some succeeded) to destroy my ship) have added depth and flavour to the game. not that I wan't to stay in any mode exclusively (I PG pretty often with a 'new commander' friend and that is great fun) but appreciate the choice. There are some days I can't be bothered with other folk - so have the choice not to.

I've seen this a lot since switching to PC, and people say the stuttering I'm now experiencing may also be a side-effect of Open. Having been stuck in "Solo jail" for most of last winter due to crappy Internet (this has since been resolved), I don't begrudge anyone choosing Solo because Open is buggy / broken for them.

Yes, I'm a terrible and scary griefer in my shieldless Dolphin - the scourge of the galaxy and the ruin of Open mode. FEAR ME!

Now you've done it, you've hurt somebody's feels. There's a reason some folks campaign regularly for "Open Only" play - because they needed someone to hang a steak around their necks to get the dogs to play with them.
Those "feels" were hurt long before launch, as soon as some players realised that every player would both experience and affect a single shared galaxy state, regardless of which game mode they played in - which meant that no-one was forced to play with them.

No, it's pretty silly to consider. If less people play open that is a problem of open lacking attractiveness.

where are all the valiant PvP protectors I keep hearing about but never see?
Being new to PvP and all, I have a question. If I go there to protect against the blockaders, do I have to wait to attack them until after they have started to attack you and gain wanted status, so I do not get a bounty or wanted status on me?

My CMDR was quaking in his proverbial boots!
