ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update (22/10)

I believe his point was that there are currently no delays 'planned' for the 2020 update. Of course it's possible that delays happen, but worrying about it is probably as nonsensical that it will rain next year... :)

Yes there are no delays planned - there are no planned delays for your flight, for the train to leave/arrive, for me waiting at the counter, but here we are talking about repeated delays for a planned feature which was deferred for a whole year. it is now deferred for a 2nd time and is far lower in scope vs the new era. So it is perfectly justifiable for people to question the timing of the planned release of the new era, which is of a far greater magnitude and scope vs a feature such as the FCs.

No, we were talking about the 2020 next era release. Please read the discussion.
Anyway, I guess that's why I said that delays might happen. 🤷‍♂️

I'm all for pushing back FC's to fix long standing bugs and new ones brought about by ARX and the September update, also this maybe insane but why not release FC as originally planned and spend next year before the paid update(which won't be delivered on time anyway) working on fixing problems, also why would/should each bug fix update take 3-4 months especially if they have as many people working on the game as they claim. This isn't me being salty just curious

Afraid not...I'm referring to the 100 people I've stood in the same room with at FD.

You are of course more than welcome to disbelieve me if you want too.
Was that the 100 people you stood in the same room with at FD on Open Day?

Assuming they're employees, those 100 people would be much more credible to the community if they had a specific list of bugs that they intend to fix instead of developing the game.

Greetings Commanders,

Following the launch of the September Update last month, we’d like to provide you all with an update on our plans for Elite Dangerous.

Firstly, thank you for all of your feedback on the September Update, which you've shared with us on the forums, across social media, on livestreams and through the Issue Tracker. There is no doubt that, in addition to the new features, the September Update introduced a number of issues and bugs which caused a lot of frustration. We are really sorry for these issues. We realise that some of the issues had an impact on your ability to enjoy Elite Dangerous. The team have been working hard to address the most critical issues and have already released a series of patches and updates to bring those fixes in as quickly as possible.

However, we know there's more to be done. You've asked for more focus on existing bug/fixes and issues, and for the community to be better integrated into the development process and testing for these upcoming updates.

In order to improve your overall experience, we have decided to refocus our efforts on addressing key issues and bugs. Since the launch of the September Update, we've been taking a deeper look at our internal development roadmap, the way in which we utilise public betas, and the content of our next updates.

Here is a summary of our plans:
  • From now and into next year (2020), the updates will focus almost exclusively on addressing recent and longstanding issues, including those reported in the Issue Tracker, ultimately making the game better.
  • We are expecting to have a series of these updates, which will be rolled out (approximately) every three to four months.
  • Each update will also include a public beta that will run prior to the update's release, with a dedicated time to address major issues that appear.
  • The first of these updates will have its public beta in December, with an expectation that the launch will be early in 2020.
As a result of our updated plans, we have made the difficult decision to defer the release of Fleet Carriers. We are now planning for Fleet Carriers to be released in an update in the second quarter of 2020, rather than in December 2019 as previously stated. This will grant us additional time to refine the feature as well as focusing time on addressing existing reported issues. It will also ensure the state of the game is in a better position to introduce Fleet Carriers, that will provide Commanders even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way. We understand that this delay will be disappointing for some players, but do know that this decision is one that we do not take lightly, and is made with the best interests of the community and game at heart.

Ultimately, we are confident that this will improve the Elite Dangerous experience for all our players.

The team have been hard at work on the next major milestone, which you may remember we mentioned back in March as our next major paid addition to the game. They’re making fantastic progress and on schedule for release by the end of next year. We are very excited to show you what we’ve been working on. However, we can only announce the content when it’s at the right stage of development, we estimate this will be ready to talk about at some time in summer 2020, after the Fleet Carriers update. We appreciate there is a bit of a wait, but we want to make sure it is ready to be shown before making our full official announcement to the world.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing and continued support and for helping give us the feedback, steer and insight to make decisions that will benefit the entire community and for your continued passion and dedication.
Thank you Will for this news.

I'm honestly Ok with this. I think Frontier have done the right thing here, and telling us was also the right thing to do.
It's better to have a feature fully developed and tested than rushed out to appease community pressure.
Unless I'm mistaken, we had resigned ourselves to 18 months of little to no content, so I will look to the expected content at the end of next year.

I'm honestly ok with this because I'm happy with the game as it is and any new content is a bonus for me. I just don't like flannel.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken here, but is that flannel remark aimed at me? And if it is, would you clarify please? I'm a bit stupid when it comes to comments on this forum.

I'm reading evidence of feature creep and the bug fixing is just juggling of work to have something happen in December. There may even be bugs directly related to the Carrier ambition but there is a lot emphasis on "old bugs" in the announcement which sounds more like the Dec beta is aimed as a general crowd pleaser.

This caught my eye, "even more opportunities to interact with the Milky Way", said outside of the "refining carriers" and "addressing old bugs". Then there was the twitter post from a developer:

While delay for FC is truly unfortunate, as I can't wait to share it with you guys, in my personal opinion I feel it is for benefit of the feature. This is pure example of "we want to make this feature as good and fun as possible".

sounds like some sort of new feature to me or an improvement to an existing feature that can be used by Carriers to improve the gameplay... Carriers are there surely to take you into the Black, some sort of new exploration tool or multi-player enchancement? Or to go completely leftfield how about Ice Planets making an appearance? Although to temper those thoughts, would seem odd not to shout aloud about it as it would make a good excuse!

Will also wrote in the announcement that FD had taken feedback from the communi9ty into account. You may or may not have a view about that, but assuming it to be true it's reasonable to assume that FD has looked at the suggestions by the community as what is needed to make FC's workable and enjoyable and decided to incorporate some of the suggestions. Pure speculation I know, but still worth mentioning.

For giggles I researched the play-time for that list of AAA titles a few pages back:
These are the hours required for a completionist play-through.

To be honest I couldn't be bothered to add up all the times on all three pages of FIFA games, but a thousand hours is about right. And I'm not sure what a completionist play-through of a game like Fortnite looks like; it feels meaningless to me.

GTA 5

RDR 1

RDR 2

Fallout 4

Battlefield
1000
The whole FIFA-Series

Fortnite

Anthem

Total:1627 and, of course most of that is FIFA.

So if you've got more than that in Elite play-time, you've already got more enjoyment out of it than all those others combined. And if you're only over 200, then you've beaten the longest of them.

You are right to note that comment. I honestly believe that FD received so many comments from the forums, they realised they hadn't thought about half the implications of what they were about to introduce, and may indeed wish to incorporate some of the ideas into the FCs before they launch. They clearly needed more time.
