Could or should Frontier enhance the FSS or add in and incorporate an optional ADS-like expansion module?

To go with the multitude of other citations to the same Dev post that has been posted an inordinate number of times when referenced to the continuing disgruntlement by a few to a game update?

You, like me, had plenty enough posts in the multiple topics that sprang up since Last December, if you are unable to reacall the particular Dev post explaining it (which appears to be the case) I am disinclined to remind you once again as it doesn't appear memorable enough to be retained in memory, despite putting to rest the non-return of the ADS.

I truly believe you dislike the ADS, that is fine - by the number of times it had been brought up there are a small number of players who are in agreement with you - but continuing to refer to the removal as 'oversight'....

That's quite a long 'no' there Ratkatcher ;)

You never know, maybe I missed something. It seems not in this case and we can amicably disagree.

Personally I don't mind the function that the FSS performs. I think the implementation is a bit dull though.
It would have been far better if all the FSS info was show in an augmented way on the HUD and focusing on a body was done by pointing the ship at it.

When I first saw the FSS, I thought it was a very good implementation for examining a system. I had feared a convoluted mini-game, but it turned out quite alright. As a replacement of flying towards the body and point at it for 30 seconds, it was a welcome feature indeed. The first live stream I did voice my appreciation for the system, but I didn't know at the time the population of the system map would be removed. I was rather happy with the exploration flow I envisioned. When finding a system which I liked, I'd go into the FSS and get more information about the planets within the system, and after that looking at potential POIs on planets I'd like to examine a bit further.

The only problem I have with it is the frequency I have to use it. That's it. If it allowed me to be more focused in it's use, I'd be cheerleading the FSS on this forum and would still be happily exploring and probably chasing after that Lagrange foggy stuff.

Of course it was quite long.... it goes with the territory :)
The only thing you missed was remembering, I can't help you with that I'm sorry :)

It was an oversight to remove the old modules Ratkatcher, a simple mistake. One that should be corrected, because there was no need to remove them from the final product. There is no ambiguity in my statement, I don't think I'm overlooking anything, but I do understand and accept that people disagree. That does not change my stance on this matter.

Putting the old modules back into outfitting is the middle ground solution that does not fall between two stools. Personally I am not advocating for any changes that would take anything away from the new stuff, simply that there was no need to remove the old stuff and therefore they should be put back in. No downside, no need to get over anything, just a quick & easy solution to a problem created by the removal of long standing, stable functionality that did not need to be removed.

Perhaps this citation might remind you :)

A considered act can never be an oversight, can it?

Hello Commanders,

I wanted to drop in and let you that we have been reading your comments and are aware how some of you feel about the FSS.

When first designing the FSS, we wanted to ensure that it was engaging for as many different player types as possible, but also understood that it would not be possible to design a system that would work for everyone. Before the FSS was implemented, we also collected feedback from discussions on the forum and the beta.

Today, in its current iteration, we’re happy with how the FSS operates and feel that reinstating the ADS would be detrimental to the experience of exploration as it is now.

At the current time, we won’t be making changes to the core of the FSS. While we understand that this may be disappointing for some of you, we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and feedback with us.

I give up. Ziggy, Burke, Karrde and the rest of your silly crew won. I'll tell Braben to add the ADS immediately.

Just had a funny thought that the FSS is kind of like a submarine game where you have to park the sub to use the periscope and the blue blobs are like sonar pings from the honk.

They should incorporate the FSS into combat game-play as well so we can enjoy having to use it before being able to target enemy ships... ;)

Fun and games aside, carry on selecting other people's memories or whatever this thread is supposedly about.

Couple of things.

  • So Silly Crew
  • Adding the ADS in it's previous form does not sit well with a couple of players, an iteration where no information of the planets are shown, and they cannot be selected, seems to be the workable compromise, so make sure to relay that to Sir B.
  • Don't give up

Can't read that Wikipedia article since it's written in a language from a different world. Also you missed an opportunity to link Rick Astley.

I just don't think the current FSS is good enough to spend much time with. I expected something else from the "exploration update", like comets, witchspace anomalies, exotic startypes, rogue planets, alien story, pirate stations. Sort of things and ideas that have been floating around since this game came out.

A black body solution would be an improvement on the current situation but there is no need for this compromised functionality - it has been tried before and was unpopular.

The way exploration works in the bubble is fine, no black bodies required or implemented. I'm looking for an optional module that replicates that in all systems as we had before 3.3.

Now that would be the icing on the cake... Out in the sticks near centre even Bio life feels very sparse... I'll have to try a few new sectors while we are waiting for new content :)

I agree wrt black bodies, which is why I said: without the info (except perhaps for mass and orbit/rotation, since you can derive that from the mass (movement), and not selectable, since you could select and ELW and then go into the FSS and already know where it is.

Now, it;s true I have never had any problem locating an ELW in the FSS within seconds, so I am only including not selectable because other players have an issue with it. I don't care one way or the other. :)
