I think we are all hoping to see more con.
If they could actually pull off the Pyro system and the flight mechanics shown in that demo worm hole flight by 2021. Now that would be real progress. Here's to hoping Chris doesn't think to add hover mode capability into that worm hole flight mechanic though.

An interesting little muse over on SA to answer the question “How did [Chris] ever manage to sell himself as being a Big Deal?”

Because Origin promoted him as such just like they did with Richard Garriott with the Ultima series. It was the just after the part where developers were hidden by Atari, it was all promoting and rockstar personalities running the show of the 90's because people wanted a face behind the games.

Now unlike others that era who failed to make headway because they couldn't manage a studio on their own or decided to act more a teamplayer because the times had changed from just 1-5 people making the game into a reality into 30-100 people doing bits to make it. Chris just kept believing himself to be the last of the rockstars to still be able to take on entire development teams like rockstar, the backers believe this so it's a loop based on a now 30yr old game that was largely forgotten by everyone who played more than 4 games in the 90's.

Ok now somebody explain this...

Fidelity

lol what sets it apart from all the other space games is that all the other games work.
(and most of them work LONG before 8 years and more than 300 million bucks)
to put that in perspective the starting price for a spaceX falcon heavy is $90 million (the version purchased by USnavy are 130mil)

the Falcon program cost 500 million to R&D :)
its so outrageous that if you said it 10 years ago some people would come and put you in a jacket that belts up at the back.

We used to play this Games Workshop game called Space Hulk (it's basically a Marines Bug Hunt). When we got bored we houseruled a version of the game where the doors were some kind of alien and could move around and kill people. The doors already kill people in SC so I guess Roberts is stealing originating a great idea.

I watched the Mandalorian yesterday , I enjoyed it. I definitely got a SC vibe from it with the ship and ability to walk around.
LMAO :D
Also, I think you got that the wrong around…
I dunno, I definitely got a SC vibe when that door killed that alien guy. 😂

I Try to watch a lot of sci-fi, but, will admit I’m not that knowledgeable in all things sci-fi.

I recommend Sci-Fi books rather then movies. They tell the better stories, provide more information and generally more bang for your buck (there is that time investment tho but it doesnt look like thats a concern for you). If you dont know where to start just take a look at Nebula priced novels, those are pretty much worth their money. If you are interested I can give you a list once we nail down where your interests lie /cheers

What's this Mandalorian thing...A movie? I get the star wars bit but if it's a movie/series...Netflix or other?

Edit: Just googled it...Disney+... which won't be available in the UK until at least March next year if ever

Not really. Of the top of my head:
  • Subnautica (alien ocean only, granted, but same concept)
  • Space Engineers
  • Helion
  • Rogue System
  • that Russian game whose name eludes me
I’m sure there’s others as well.

Already mentioned probably, but X4: seamless ship to ship, seamless EVA, from next version seamless EVA to station. There's actually a seam in the sense that it all happens via "teleportation" in and out of bridges/cockpits, but that's due to the very limited time and resources of the team making hard to have all the required assets and animations. It's still all in the same universe instance, so seamless in that way.

On the plus side though, it has spaceships in space and there's no water at the bottom.

"Don't let the door hit you on the way out", quite literally.

cough..... Subnautica.... cough
sure subnautica is set under water but the game mechanic is EXACTLY what you describe.

get out of your vehicle... move around freely in a 3d space with 6DOF and move into another vehicle or structure seamlessly.
(once you have the BIG submarine you can also walk around freely in there and transition from inside the vehicle to outside seamlessly exactly like you do in SC)

you can build those structures yourself to your own design, move freely around them on foot. jump through the bottom of your moonpool into that same 3d environment.

take away the fog and water ripple effects and it is exactly the same as a space game (well its not exactly the same it actually works 100% of the time in SN)

there are also islands where you walk around on foot and the transition from water to land is also seamless.
Ok, should I have said that`s unique with the level of detail SC has? I do not played Subnautica yet, because I´m into NMS and that is enough procedural creation for me. NMS, Astroneer, Subnautica etc. look cartoonish to me. Don`t get me wrong, I generally prefer gameplay over graphics. The overall realistic looking graphics plus the features I mentioned we have in SC now is unique to me. It´s a game (tech demo if you want to call it like that) I want to play, and I can only hope that CIG manage to expand on that inclusive no showstopper bugs.

Subnautica is not procedural.

I love how SC unconditionally gets above any competition simply by requesting to compare both with graphics AND gameplay. Moreso when graphics are already surpassed, and gameplay still MIA.
Oh yeah there's the scale too (being surpassed already too).

It's like with "it's alpha", "they had to build a company" and other excuses, the more years pass by, the more it sounds disingenuous.
